**Note that go dark, dead, shut off, go cold are all meaning that the laptop goes absolutely dead in an instant. No shut down, BSOD, etc.
Hi everyone.
So recently my laptop, the Dell XPS 15 has been doing something wrong. Every so often it will have these 'fits' where it just suddenly goes dark, cold, off, no mas. No blue screen, no shut down, nothing. Just instantly, gone.
More details. I noticed that sometimes when I am launching a program it will do it. Also, it tends to do it when I close the lid, while it attempts to enter sleep mode. It will also do it sometimes when logging in, in fact right after the chime to desktop. Also, it enters these fits sometimes. I will attempt to boot, and somewhere inbetween login screen and button press to start, it will repeat. This can go on for about 20 minutes before it stops all issues, for literally many days!
Now here is the twist. If the laptop is on a flat desk, and not being moved, it will NEVER do this. But if I have it in my lap, in the car, or holding it has a higher probability.
Even more strange: If the laptop did it's go dead thing, it becomes weird. If I shake it lightly during boot it will also go dark. Like if it is in my leg and I move it slightly, it will go dark.
Let me just rephrase for emphasis. This is the most incriminating piece of information: If the laptop is moved during boot, it will sometimes go dark at that exact moment. It is consistent, and no coincidence.
Additional information: It makes a beep sound like thing. It is more like a click and a beep combined it one, but it coincides with the go dead moment. I get the same noise when I am booting and I hold the power button.
Heat has no effect. Temps are normal for a laptop. Plus issues happen even when laptop is cooled for a while.
The issue happens both plugged in and on battery.
Specs:
Intel i5 -2430M @ 2.4 Ghz (Turbo to 2.6?)
6.00 GB of RAM, 5.90 GB are usable
64 bit
No touch or pen input
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium, Service Pack 1
1Tb Hard Drive
GTS 525m 306.xxxx drivers (Windows certified)
My ideas:
I believe that it must be something physical, since issues are effected by physical movement of the laptop. At first I thought that the hard drive head crashed into the platters or something, however replacing the hard drive had no effect.
If it is internal hardware, essentially I was told from various sites that it could be anything. CPU errors, RAM issues, VRAM faults, broken capacitors, shorts, PSU failure, GPU failure, AC/DC board, like everything except the screen...
My strongest believe is that there is a loose connection, somewhere in the laptop. I actually think that it is something with the processor, but I don't think that moving the laptop during boot would cause faults.
I bet there is just a loose part, but I don't know how to find it, I am literally in desperate need.
Just recently I did 3Dmark 11 on my laptop, just to see how it stack up. As I was viewing the results I looked into general information and saw that not only are my RAM sticks different types, but also different sizes, and clocked really, really low.
Should I upgrade my RAM? What do you suggest if I should do so? It feels like this RAM is crappy or possibly faulty, and I am considering running Memorytest86 (Or whatever it is called )
Also, occasionally my laptop just goes cold dead. (Battery is fine). Like I am doing something, usually launching a program, and just poof. Off. No Shut down, no blue screen.
Hey MrDenco, I have been looking at this and I'm not sure whether I'll use it or not. Looks really cool though I kind of agree that repeaters should be able to be instant (as you proposed in another topic before making this mod).
PS:
Y U CHANGE PICTURE?? D:
I use it off and on personally. I like being able to put Instant Repeaters in certain parts of the computer or rs machine.
Oh and I wanted a change is all. My next picture will be a tennant one, don't you worry.
Anyway I can tell great minds think alike!! While mine was only 3 centuries, I could easily make it a 3 Million year one just by stacking it 4 higher
Great topic, though you know.... I came first
I mean discovery is not mutually exclusive. Nice find. I shall deliver a pat on the back for both of us.
Yes. Seriously, I was not considering price at all. You are quite literally creating ridiculous scenarios in your head.
Nothing that I have said has been false.
price / performance is far, far far more imporant then benchmarks, $40 for 2 FPS =/= value, which is something nVidia has really lost lately, considering AMD has better drivers atm (for BF3 being a nVidia game, AMD does better), compute power, and better prices
till you can make a unbiased decision or actually post some helpful info, don't even try and help
maybe you should check your info before you post
I was refuting the statement
along with the 7750 and 7770, and the 7950 is better then the 670 and the 7970 is better then the 680
The GTX 650ti is just as if not less expensive than the 7770, and is significantly better than the 7750.
You said that the 7950 is better then the 670. They are essentially the same.
You said the 7970 is better than the 680. They are essentially the same.
For your information, I did check the benchmarks. That I how I know the performance is equal between the two.
I never said anything about price/performace ratio... cough cough....
Oh? I was unaware nVidia had better GPUs than AMD. Care to provide some benchmarks, and price to performance charts?
I believe you were confusing the CPUs from Intel and the CPUs from AMD.
Either of you, if you want to compare performance AND price, mention it. If not, I will and others will assume you are talking strictly about perforamce.
Again, I never said ANYTHING about performance price ratio.
Also, BKrenz, can you find the post in this thread where I say that Nvidia is had better GPUs than AMD?
Both companies produce a huge amount of GPU models. Sometimes one, at the same price, will triumph over the other. One company is not intrinsically better than the other.
not really, 7850 and 7870 trump nVidia's offerings, along with the 7750 and 7770, and the 7950 is better then the 670 and the 7970 is better then the 680, and Ocs better
Note 1: The GTX 650 ti beats the 7770.
Note 2: The 7950 and 670 are essentially equals, as are the 7970 and 680. When the AMD cards beat the Nvidia ones respectivly, it is only by .5-2 FPS, and the Nvidia cards sometimes dominate the AMD ones, but the reverse is not true.
You should check the benchmarks on AnandTech before you post.
Ok so let me get this straight. you say windows encourages to do nothing. Then say macs encourage productivity. Then say how windows comes with nothing good for creativity then say about how people are productive with macs with adobe which isn't free. Which is also available on windows. And we have faster hardware for cheaper. and we have quicksync
It isn't about the programs. Sorry about that.
I am saying that the way one interacts with Windows 7 or OSX encourages people to produce their own digital stuff. Windows 8 attempts to stop this, in lieu of playing angry birds, constant twitter updates, and random news stories flashing in your face.
Like I want to specifically try to make the game lag, and fail. (like Far render distance, with fancy graphics, 3D anaglyph turned on, using the new snapshot with the redone texture system, looking at lots of lava and explosions, while running skype, AIM, my media player, and a video recorder in the background, while my antivirus program scans my hard drive, and still getting 60 frames a second in Minceraft.)
Anyway, i5 3750k would be a great processor, if you can match it with a $150+ GPU (usually you would want to go the AMD road until you can afford 200+)

Literally that is how they are used.
You save a value when you want.

Did you even read my post, you do you just enjoy making inaccurate Insinuations?

In the 100-200 range yes. Above that? Nvidia really surges ahead.
Oh a 7970? Oh wow a $380 card can max a game out? Who knew.
