I prefer using stone half slabs and stone for the pathways, diging up a 4 wide section then adding stone on the outside and then the hald slabs in the middle give it a nice look and the half slabs will make it where the mobs dont spawn on your walk ways.
I think that if they are planning on doing 1.8.2 update then not doing abother update till 1.2.3 then I think that enchanting and possibly breeding need to be brought forward, now if they were going to do a 1.9 update say two months after the 1.8 update then I can maybe say it be worth waiting for enchanting. However even with out enchanting the 1.8.2 update will be bringing some fun new stuff that you should easily not be bored for two months till the next update.
Best place to look is in the wiki at the pc updates however the 1.8 update we will be getting will not only have the 1.8.2 updates the pc got but also include some of the 1.9 updates, we however are not certain at the time what those updates will be.
