I dunno if I'll win

hah. like this is some sort of contest.

has anyone actually been gifted an account because of this thread? just curious.

Actually, Yes, and no...

Im not sure about just this thread, but I am running a contest, now in its second month (and second gift code).
And I gave away a Code on the 20th of dec, and will be giving out another at the end of January.

I have been pming people who post here and letting them know to go and enter, and 'm pretty sure that the winner of Decembers contest came from this thread.

the link to this months contest is:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=125211

Please drop in and enter if you wish to know for a fact that you have a chance at one EVERY MONTH!
Oh yea, and Please Spread The Word,

I have enough Alpha codes to give one a month till June, and If enough people enter, I will keep doing it every month till at least when the game is officially released

Thanks for the Entries so far, good going guys (and maybe girls).

Keep up the good work, remember that you have all month to add or modify your entries.

And Spread the word far and wide, I got around 20+ good entries last month, I would like to see 40-50 this month, and an increasing number from there.
Anyone who frequents classic servers, let the mods and ops there know about the contest, encourage them to get ahold of me, and encourage them to spread the word themselves.
I can provide the sign i made in a cuboid schematic to any mods who would be kind enough to put it up for their visitors to see (you cant see it in the pic, but the back side has the forum address)

Thats a cool ass thing you did there.

Thanks, I thought so.

Please spread the word, and if any mods want, I would love the contest page to be sticky'd, or put on the announcements to get more competition.

Also, I would love it if anyone running a Classic Server would get ahold of me (I am in the process of trying to contact all of them)

First, I can provide the sign i made (and it has instructions on the back of it) as a cuboid schematic,
And would love it if any mods, admins or ops would like to display it in their Classic Server where people can see it. (the sign above, the first I made, Is located on the Electronum server)

Second, I would be interested in servers who would be inclined to allow competitors to build there.

and Third, I would like mods, admins and ops to Word of mouth the contest to anyone that they think would be a great addition to the paid Minecraft community.

I currently have a Beta server (VSP, not a box at the house), but I am not familiar with how to host a Classic server, particularly one with multiple worlds.
If anyone is familiar, and would like to be a part of my on-going competition, I would like their help getting my server set up so that I can provide it as the main competition host. Mainly to make it easy for me to review the structure, and watch it being built to make sure that the rules are being followed, as well as lock it down so that it cannot be griefed.
Other very helpful information would be to know how much a classic server loads the computer versus a Alpha/Beta server.
I currently rent 768MB of ram (and from what Ive observed on it, the beta server uses hardly any of the available cpu, and i believe (would have to check) that i have 100mbs up connection, all located in Sacramento, CA . I am advised that that will host around 10 simultaneous connections in beta.

Thanks

I want to start a tree farm on this SMP server. Is there a way to control the height of all the trees so that they don't grow branches?

--Deathgleaner

:cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:

If you are the Server Admin, and want it server-wide, then I'm not sure, but I'd start by searching the mods category for "tree" to see whats there.

If you are just making your own tree farm on someone Else's server, then the process would be as follows:

As trees must reach 6 or more in height before they have a chance at branches:

First make a tower of 5 blocks of anything, then top it (the 6th block) with a block type that would appear the most natural to you in a tree (maybe planks?)

Jump down and remove the 5 blocks underneath

Then plant your sapling directly underneath, it will grow with 5 open spaces tall, provided there is enough light.

posted a message on How did YOU get into playing minecraft?
I cant remember how I heard of it actually.
But I know what got me into it....

LEGOs

A life-consuming addiction since childhood.

My first thoughts (of classic) were "First Person LEGOs"

And once I decided to get it to save my world (and beat the beta deadline), and tasted Alpha, well...

I immediately picked up another account for a friend...

Then I started to rent a server in California just for us (lowest lag I could find to North Pole, AK)...

Wanting to spread the joy, I hosted a Win an Alpha contest, with moderate sucess...

Then I bought 10 Alpha gift codes when they came out, To give away to people...

Then I Decided I had met enough people on classic who Minecraft deserved to have...

So now I'm Doing a contest every month...

And I would say I haven't seen the sun since because of Minecraft, But its winter in North Pole, AK, and I wouldn't have gotten to see the sun for another couple months anyways :biggrin.gif:

Needless to say, I LOVE THIS GAME,
And I'm just getting started into it.

(if anyone knows deserving crafters without a paid account, the contest topic is in my Sig)

Never enough hostility,
However,
If your running a server, or have controlling access to the root of a group server, you can edit the spawn rate (for all mobs at once only) and make it insanely high :wink.gif:

Im seconding the vote for some HARDER mobs however.

posted a message on Another Free Alpha Account from North Pole
Aloha
I am, again, giving away one free MineCraft Alpha Gift Code.

PLEASE read this complete post before submitting your entry.
IF YOU JUST POST BEGGING FOR AN ACCOUNT WITH BLATANT DISREGARD FOR THE RULES
!YOUR ENTRY WILL BE DISQUALIFIED!
Please check back and read edits to this post as the contest goes on, I WILL be modifying and adding demonstration pictures soon.
I need people (with or without a paid account) to vote on the contest results,
so please check back if your not entering.
And please bump if you think that giving away accounts to the deserving is a good thing.

This Months Contest will be based on submissions of models made in Minecraft Classic (with certain exceptions as listed in the rules below)

The basic Rules are as follows:

* Your Entry should be created from now to the end of January, and should be made specifically for this contest.
There are TWO exeptions to this rule
#1: I will, however, allow ADDITIONS to previous models or projects, but you must first take pictures of what existed before you begin, and these pictures must have the construction spoke of below visible.
#2: I posted these basic rules in the topic of December's drawing, so if you started then, and you obeyed the rules, then your entry will be accepted.

* You should take periodic pictures as you are building, many of which you will post as LINKS in your entry.
--> At MINIMUM, you should have a before picture, with the construction mentioned below, and pictures at about 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% Complete, These Pictures should be posted as viewable pics in the entry (I will not disqualify you for not being able to do this, but pm me and I'll try and help you)
ALL other pictures should be posted as LINKS so as not to clog the topic.

* Most Pictures must have a construction, or words that show that you took the pictures after you heard of this contest, examples include words like: Merlin_Q, North Pole or NP, 907, etc. And/Or symbols such as: The Alaska flag, a thermometer at -45, the "Coldfoot" from my thermometer (I'll get you a better pic), A BEARDED snowman, etc. IT IS alright to have some pictures from angles where you can not see the construction, so long as its obviously the same project, most should include it.

* If of epic proportions, the construction used for the authentication above could BE your entire entry, or a large part thereof.
I will be providing examples very soon as to the authentication constructions, but I think it will be obvious if you created it for the contest.

* Even though it is classic, I don't want solid diamond, gold, iron, etc, structures, unless you ABSOLUTELY need the color (for pixel art, etc) OR you create a mine of SUFFICIENT size to show that effort was made to mine for that much valuable material, uses of valuable materials for minor decoration is allowed.

* I will allow creations made with a friend's Alpha account, but I would rather not, as I will have to tour it personally, and speak with the friend, and verification that its your work is hard overall.

* I will allow creations made in a team, but there is only ONE prize, and you must comprehensively detail whose job was what, and how long each individual spent.

* If in a team or not, Creative or not, if you are creating your entry on a multiplayer server, you MUST provide the server in a PM to me (not in your entry to prevent griefing), and you MUST have the admin/mods discuss their observations of its construction, etc. with me.
--> After some thought, the use of a multiplayer server is encouraged, as I would like to observe the building, and talk with your server mods about you as a player.

Most Importantly, Spread the word to others who would be an asset to the community, keeping the pool small will not increase your chances in the long run.
Also spread the word to admins, mods, etc that you meet on Creative Multiplayer Servers, so they can come to vote, and likewise tell people they see.

(If you are not frequenting Creative Multiplayer Servers, then I would advise you do, to meet the crafters, see what is being done in Minecraft, and get ideas etc.)

I would like to thank the following Classic Servers for sponsoring by advertising this contest:

pending

And The Following SMP Servers:

The Red-Eyed Gamers

(yea I know this list is very short at the moment, so please let mods know about the contest)
If you see an ad for this contest on a server, please let me know, so I can add them.
If you are a mod or high-level user on a server, think about adding the following ad on the wall of your main room:
FREE MINECRAFT ALPHA ACCOUNT EVERY MONTH
http://WWW.MINECRAFTFORUM.NET
SEARCH FOR MERLIN_Q
(this is assuming you have a text plugin for your server, if not let me know, and I will build one for you)
Thanks

@kherr

How is your stein running Minecraft?

If i had to add anything, even if it might not improve performance IN GAME much,
You should very much so upgrade that hard drive, once they get really old, they can cause some serious system stability issues, affecting everything you do. I'm pretty sure 40 gig disks have not been around for... well, years.

I Hope you are enjoying Minecraft with your new(er) comp, try increasing your fog distance to max, i know it sounds backwards, but it gave my computer a big leap early on in the beta to use the farthest (no fog) mode instead of ANY lower. I was getting 40+fps pretty much all the time in alpha, but dropped to around 7-10 with any fog when beta hit, and for at least a week after. mine is working fine now, but that doesn't mean that there aren't still hardware combinations without bugs.

btw, if you do have it running, and you would like to play on a private, no griefers server, let me know via pm.
We are pretty vanilla, an exploration type server, but once you make a good base on your own, and you show dedication to build qool stuff, i can grant tools and other aid to making grand structures.
I can also extract any part of the world, and allow you to continue it in single player, or transfer it to any server you please later on.
