I've written a terrible backstory for them, and put names to the five groups and individuals I've had floating around in my head for the last few days. I'll update as I think of more, but is it good enough to start IC at the moment?

    KBACK

Apologies, I got an unanticipated opportunity to do some travel, and was already on the aeroplane before I realised I wouldn't have internets.

I must ask, though: do we have to write the histories of the entire race, or merely the part we will be focusing on? I'm going to be playing around with maybe four or five groups of Vorta, and I can't even begin to imagine where the others are.

A few Vorta could work with the Uzati. The way I had imagined them was that there aren't any empires of Vorta, just vagrant fleets and colonies scattered throughout space.

    Quote from oZode

They work for this RP, but personally I hope they're not hive minds since hive minded things being grotesque monsters seems played out too much.

    Fear not, they're individually conscious.

By the way, oZode, what do you think of the Vorta so far? I haven't written much, but I've got their physiology down.

My point was that 'blue flame' is vague, and 'flames above 1 200° Celsius' is the same thing (i.e. a flame hot enough to burn blue) but can't be confused with a type of chemical fire that burns blue, or some sort of flame weapon.

EDIT: I got the first bit of the Vorta article up (the overview and their physiology). I'll write more after work.

Change 'blue flame' to 'temperatures above 1 200° Celcius', as that's the temperature that a flame will begin burning in the 'white' range (which includes blue). At first I thought a 'blue flame' was a specific chemical fire or some sort of heat weapon, not just high-temperature flame.

Also, work on the page for the Vorta (my race) has started.

((A brief post in which nothing happens that was written for the sole purpose of confirming that I didn't fall off the face of the Earth again.))

As Blake continued his long march through the blasted wastes, he had encountered no less than twelve other men, all of which had tried to kill him on sight. To show for his encounters, he had seventy new bottlecaps, twenty-four (he had counted them) fewer bullets, and a long streak of scar tissue on his left arm where a bullet had grazed a good ten centimetres of flesh before flying off behind him. Altogether, not too bad for a solid week of travel. Besides, the more he killed, the more rations became available.

As the days had gone by, the scenery hadn't changed noticeably, other than there being slightly more of the sparse shrubs that he didn't think deserved to share the name of the green-and-brown titans of arboriculture that once blanketed the Earth. However, it was getting decidedly warmer (which is to say, he now wouldn't die of frostbite if his fire went out during the night. It was still cold), and he could tell that it was only a matter of time before he reached something settled, though it probably wouldn't be another New Vegas. Regardless, it would be good to find a settlement of some kind, even if all he wanted was the supplies and not the people.

Blake mused to himself about how he would approach a hypothetical town. Would he slaughter everyone, or would he come in peace like he had back in his performer days? Maybe he would just raid them in the night and leave the high and dry for the next band of raiders to finish off. There were so many things one could do to a town, he realised, if you simply let go of your ideas of 'good' and 'bad'.

His attention was snapped back to reality by a slight rustle in a nearby shrub. Blake instinctively pulled his gun out and pulled the slide back to make sure he had a round chambered. While he had encountered wind rabbits before, he had also encountered radscorpions and he knew that it never hurt to be cautious. Keeping the pistol trained on the shrub, Blake slowly rotated around it, checking behind it. The leaves weren't very thick, what with the apocalypse and all, so whatever it was should be visible from some angles.

Just as Blake finally got to the other side of the small plant, something harmless-looking that was probably descended from a rabbit hopped out at high speeds and tore off into the distance. He immediately relaxed and holstered his pistol. Blake quietly laughed at how he had reacted, turned around, and continued East.

((EDIT: By the way, Herr Crane: neither the Vector assault rifle nor the Cheytac exists in the Fallout 'verse. We've got 'Murican and Chinese ARs chambered in 5.56 NATO and two types of sniper rifles (namely the bland 'Sniper Rifle', and the Anti-Materiel Rifle from NV that looks like it could cripple a tank).))

Maybe 'Boltzmann Entity' is the actual name, but since it takes too long to say if they're attacking you, they're called 'Boltzmen' by some people.

Also, Shoggoth is pretty close to what I had in mind, but how I envisioned them had more of a 'bones-and-blades' aesthetic than a 'gelatin-stuff' one.

EDIT: Think of it this way: you remember how in HALO 3, there were those Flood guys that could shift between the Tank forms (the giant things that help you take on the Citadel), the Ranger forms (the weird spider-things) and the Stalker forms (the ones that shoot yellow needles at you)? Something like that, but with much smoother transitions and the ability to turn into basically any shape imaginable with the amount of biomass at hand.

I'm going to be aliens again, but not like last time. Think a bizarre mesh of 'Nids, Zerg, the Flood (HALO) and 'The Thing From Outer Space' that results in a whirling, almost fluid-like mass of flesh and bone that's a flyer when it needs to be, a quadruped when that's what is needed, and maybe even becomes a plant or something if that's what it feels like doing. The point is fluidity and rapid, single-generation evolution.

The 'assimilation' bit is also a convenient cop-out for the language/cultural barrier, though first contact would be messy.

EDIT: An idea that looking at the nebula map gave me was to have a few of them masquerade as Humans and pull a 40k on them (FOR ZE EMPRAH 40k, not moneys or numerical 40k).

EDIT 2: Also, 'Boltzmann Entities' is stupid. Just 'Boltzman' (pl. 'Boltzmen') sounds better in my opinion.

Thank you, that explained the idea better. However, if a Boltzmann Brain were to attack a ship, wouldn't it be a Boltzmann 'Person' or 'entity', rather than just a mind?

Maybe I'm just getting the idea seriously wrong. I'm a chemist, not an astrophysicist.

Oh Jeebus, not that guy (referring to [heavysarcasm]"Doctor"[/heavysarcasm] Craig, not the asker).

But from my cursory glance through it, only one Boltzmann Brain would occur in any universe at a time, making it a sort of miniboss rather than an armada of attackers, were a ship to encounter one.

And I stole the idea of there being a worse space than normal hyperspace from a certain Dr. Paul Linebarger, so sue me (don't really, though).

On-topic: Goodie, another Ozode space RP! All is right with the world.

    Boltzmann Brains, though?
