Anyway to get the dev build without joining the Discord? If I did join I would just leave again and I feel that would be kind of rude. I already have too many servers im in to keep track of with my rodent grade attention span so I would really like to avoid adding another if possible D:
Hah, I was about to ask, "Not 1.8.9? Aww.". Awesome work with the support
I've got all my 1.8 essential mods downloaded, all I'm waiting for now is RTG.
(1.7.10 RTG with all those mods was so slow with terrain generation. It was painful! That's why I'm ready for RTG 1.8. Have an example of a 1.7.10 Biomes o' plenty swamp with many mods including RTG )
Ok bro, if you want to make a mod like (or copying) orespawn I won't, and will never help you, mostly because orespawn includes: random thing 1, random thing 2, overpowered mega one hit ko sword 1, overpowered mega one hit ko sword 2 etc. yes my mod is called collection of things, but... just no.... my mod is, (or will be) a tech based exploration mod.
I hope I didn't rant too much, and I hope you take this at face value, I am fine with helping you make your own mod, but copying someone else's, just... no.
TLDR: do your own work, and don't copy anyone else's ideas. (unless they say you can)
-meelock
ps. before even posting this on the forums, I would have recommended you had at least made a GitHub repo, and written a few block classes, and the main class. if you want to do that now, look up Minecraft forge modding, and click the one on the forge forums, if there are errors I can help.
There's nothing wrong with creating something someone else has already made. Infact, building upon the ideas of others has led us to have the technology we have today. If you can make a better product with the same idea, then it's usually best to do so
I'd be great if Mojang would stop being a bunch of sallies and help with this and make it vanilla after 1.9. I'd really like to donate to the mod, but unfortunately I don't have any money.
Like anything that delves deeply into the coding, they avoid it, because inside of it... Notch lingers.
Interesting. I hope to see more attention to this by others.
"Now, this may seem a rather daunting task, but if you think through some
of the things I mentioned you'll realize its not super complicated."
Though I think you are underestimating the work needed to do most of these things, as it would most likely require the rewriting of some core parts of Minecraft itself. Of course, though, with a talented team, anything is possible! Good luck.
Well if this is infeasible atm I suggest taking a look at the mod Mine-Up.
This mod stacks/connect dimensions ontop/below the overworld.
This may be the solution to eliminatie the height cap by just adding in some dimensions for now...
Sadly the modmaker left it for death and it's still in 1.2.5, but I believe this might be worth working on.
While this would be a nice alternative to cubic chunks in regards to world height, it is not completely what cubic chunks is aiming for...
i dont want to put his personal info out or speak for him but i can assure you hes alive
i will ask him to give you guys an update soon
Phew... He's got a lot of talent, kindness, and motivation, even through feeling awfully sick. I hope he pulls through easy. His updates and details about his life and work are really fascinating, good luck to him. He doesn't have to give updates though! Just a notice he's still kicking, hah.
And yea, like krazeecain said. But of course, I'd say life issues take priority over the Minecraft forums, so I can understand the absence here.
It's been three years of attempts now with no joy. Like it or not it is impossible unless Mojang steps in, and they won't, no matter how much people hope differently. It is too much of a rewrite of pretty much every core system Minecraft has. Changing the way chunks are handled breaks everything. So you have to rewrite the terrain generator and the way lighting is handled and the renderer. At which point, nothing works even a little bit anymore. So you need to rebuild the terrain decorator, the spawn system, caves, ores, structures, etc. and then fix all the bugs you've created plus deal with any surprises in Minecraft's code itself (as poorly optimized and not bug free as it is).
I've kept an eye on it from the beginning. I was fairly excited when Robinton first introduced it. When updates started faltering and it was still buggy and unfinished I took a look at what would be needed (I'm a hack programmer) and added up what had to be done versus what still needed to be attempted and it was immediately obvious to why he gave up. I've watched the hype come and go over the years and watched these projects come and go, most not getting past the planning stages.
It is a very pretty theory but it never translates to reality. At this point I am willing to be proven wrong but I stand by it being impossible for a modder to accomplish this.
Having said that, there are two options I wish people would consider. The first would be a more limited implementation. Everyone is trying to make unlimited cubic chunks, and I can understand that. But tackling something smaller might prove more fruitful. Bring the build height up to 512 or 1024 with cubic chunks, demonstrate to Mojang it can be done, albeit in a limited fashion. It would still be a pile of work, but you'd be able to rely on more of Mojang's code versus having to rebuild stuff and, while still a herculean task, it should be possible. Especially if you could get a small team of dedicated modders. If it gets polished up and brings all the benefits that is predicted (mostly not tanking FPS and/or introducing nasty bugs) turn to Mojang and say "Here, we did this. Here is the code, feel free to use it." At that point it is much more likely that it will get adopted officially and from that point it should then be possible to expand on it.
The second option is just build a brand new game from scratch. I keep wishing someone would do this. It has been 5 years and no one has tried to make a Minecraft-like. We get close, we get Minecraft-buts (minecraft but in space, for example (Space Engineers), Minecraft but with dinosaurs, (Ark)). No one, however, has nailed the lego like open canvas feel of Minecraft, and that is a shame. Minecraft is a wonderful thing, but Notch was an amateur programmer at best and the code is a 5 year old nest of hacks and kludges and iterations of hacks and kludges, which is why its performance is so poor despite 5 years of computer advancement. Hell, just making Minecraft multi-threaded has been an ongoing project for years and it still doesn't rely on the GPU as much as it should.
And I've ranted enough. Shrug.
Yes, you have ranted enough.
There were no 'three years of attempts now with no joy'. Infact, we saw at least 3-2 mods that increased build height and chunk generation heights from 256 to 2048. Then Mojang created a new update to go up to 256 with the introduction of the new terrain system.
The only thing was that the modders got bored and move onto other projects. It was proven it works. You don't need any more proof.
"impossible unless Mojang steps in, and they won't, no matter how much people hope differently." Seriously? You sound like someone who got salty things didn't go his way, so when they didn't he immediately tried to throw down everyone who hopes otherwise. Stop it.
"Bring the build height up to 512 or 1024 with cubic chunks" You apparently have no idea how numbers work in regards to these things. Limiting the height of generation does not make anything easier to code in, you still have to mess with Mojang's codes and variables in the same ways, and you're just placing a fake limit.
"The second option is just build a brand new game from scratch. I keep wishing someone would do this."
Go nuts. Build and generation height goes beyond 60,000 blocks in both directions. It's essentially a free open source Minecraft with a diverse modding scene and talented people just messing about with code.
You need to quit saying you aren't proven wrong when you even quoted a working mod. Buggy, unfinished, whatever. It translated to a reality you keep wanting to deny because things are unfinished. Then you rant, seemingly complaining(?) about it without taking any action to make it a reality.
@EpicReacher, When did they say that? A YEAR AGO? Also 100 free accounts doesn't mean they are going directly to you so get over it :\. And the minecraft forums aren't mojang. so... Anyways Grow up get your OWN money and don't live off of free things. That's a life lesson for yah. But I too have a reason to hate mojang. Reason: They release the new updates but they are buggy as heck! But then again they release a patch like 2 minutes later XD.
@Intellectz Yes I agree with you highly BUT I'm also not cowering and I support mojang and I'm not going for bethesda... Although I loves bethesda's games and all it's just not right that they are dealing with this that short. And notch said on "The Word of Notch" that a Sweden lawyer told him that he expects him to have the lump of cash up front before the blah blah starts. And I take that pretty harshly. The amount of money that needs to be paid is unknown at this time as it won't probably be told until the sue is lost or won and in either way this is bad... The word "Scrolls" that mojang is using has been used for about 2 months at least and nobody has said a thing about "The Elder Scrolls" In that time yet Bethesda has just shot there rockets after seeing this once. This here really makes me angered that such a great company would do such a thing. (This feels so much like political talk with some kid talk in the background!) Although bethesda is... Rather insulted or either they feel copied it is that mojang should have done deeper research and should see if certain names they use can be copyrighted.
He also said Scolls not Scrolls. Also guys Bethesda isn't the bad guy... (well they are sorta) They make great games and they slipped onto Notch's name for the game and got... What should I use... "Confused" as I may say it. How ever Bethesda should also consider being on "Bright side" And not go crazy with One simple word someone might get confused about. As saying Scrolls doesnt mean The Elder Scrolls in anyway unless they abbreviated The Elder Scrolls into just Scrolls. Mojang however Didn't mean for this to happen and Bethesda should of acknowledged that instead of suing. But Mojang was already asked to not use the name "Scrolls" in the new game not much similar to The Elder Scrolls. So otherwise Mojang is being sued as sadly it may be we merely can't stop it so commenting Especially on these forums wouldn't really work.

If you absolutely must have it without joining the Discord server, you can compile it from source here: https://github.com/OpenCubicChunks/CubicChunks
Otherwise, head to the Discord server.

I can see some dark dots, indicating a structure, but that's about it. Seriously not sure what that is he's talking about though...

Thank you for your work! You and WhichOnesPink, both! It means a lot.

Still contributing to the community so much. Good luck to you. Thanks for reviving colored lights.

Dang, this looks impressive. Such a hefty download size though. Awesome work.

With mods, Minecraft transforms. While your shader does not perform the best, it has the best atmosphere in my opinion.

If it's based off of Chocapic's most recent shaders (or at least some of the more recent ones) it should work just fine.
I'm running an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 GPU and this works just fine!
Make sure you've installed things correctly/updated your GPU drivers.

He hasn't seemed to be active (or at least logged in) since November... I have bad thoughts, but I hope they aren't true.
