Exactly that. Then we wouldn't really need horses. But it seems they are in the game.

Hello, thank you for taking a look here. As you might know, horses are CONFIRMED. We have official proof of vanilla horses.
See, horses have been (at least partially) coded already. So just calm down and get over it. Also, I shall try to form rebuttals to some common arguments against horses.
1. But we have piggies!
Rebuttal: So, riding pigs is a horribly useless feature, unless you boost (which uses 1/4th of the Carrot on a Stick's durability) you are better off walking.
2. But it is soooooooooo cliche!
Rebuttal: and zombies, grass, trees, low-res aesthetics, skeletons, giant spiders, slimes, witches, ect. aren't?
3. It ain't quirky like riding pigs!
Rebuttal: So, too much quirky stuff is a bad thing. If you saw a guy do something quirky, and he did nothing but that, I would guarantee you would want to beat him with a brick within the first 5 hours.
4. It is so useless!
Rebuttal: There are many things in Minecraft that are useless.
Finally, Mojang's Minecraft team probably worked hard on this feature, I don't think someone would throw away work that at a minimum took a few days because of the above mentioned arguments. We also have no idea what the specifics are on horses anyways, so people... if you are going to complain, wait until you have actually used it. So in short, calm yourselves!Good god, people and their entitlement theses days...
Things that may be added to the horse could have been added to the pig. Makes it easier to code. It also renders pigs, again, more than worthless. And that is the principle you call redundancy. I do not care for originality, but the reason why, and why in this way, and why it is the best way or not, these things are my question.

What if horses had a unique drop that could open the door to whole new possibilities? Would they then be 'okay'? If I recall correctly, horses in real life are a major sores of fibers for certain kinds of rope. So what if minecraft horses dropped cords that can be crafted into rope which then can be crafted into such things as rope bridges, rope ladders, grappling hooks maybe, and whips--which I think would be a nice medium range weapon addition with more range than a sword but not as much as a bow. Also, hog ties--use them to tie up a pig, pick them up, and move them more easily then with wheat/carrots.
If I would kill a horse, I don't think most people think about glue or cords or stuff (considering we have slimeballs and string). I don't think of anything they would drop tbh though.

I've actually seen there be made mods for things that seem very hard to make considering Minecraft's engine. I've seen one for colored lights, increased height limit, etc. both of which, have stopped being worked on for a long time. And I'm sure we'd all love these them if they could appear in the actual game without having them become outdated every time the game updates. Of course there isn't a mod for EVERYTHING, but there certainly are mods for something if a handful of people think it would be cool or useful.
I'm aware of the right clicking ability. As I'm told, once you reach top speed on the pig, the rate of speed is 8 blocks/second. When you sprint, you're going at about 5.6 blocks/second, and when you add in speed potions, the gap becomes easily bridged, and I've already mentioned the difference in acceleration. Also, from my experience, the pig's speed boost actually lasts shorter and fluctuates more than a Speed II potion, so if you think about it, speed potions essentially may have already made pigs obsolete. The difference is that there are certain pros and cons to each, and I'm thinking IF horses are going to have any major pros, then they're also going to have some major cons also, and the major con with potions is it costs more resources. However, if you're pretty far into a Minecraft world, and you're essentially able to farm these resources, that, in terms of functionality, speed potions can easily become more preferable than a pig, so leaving the "cool factor" aside, why should a "higher level" player need a pig? As for horses, maybe for cons, they'll be pretty rare, just to make you feel rewarded once you finally find one. I also propose that they only appear in Plains biomes, because feral horses seem to live in large, open grassland habitats the most.
Really though, I understand it's just a difference in opinion. But it seems they're adding horses anyway, so I don't think they're going to buff pig-riding at this point.
I think the rareness isn't really good to balance things out. If you are lucky, you find horses next your spawn. If you have bad luck, you never see one. (Like the Witch Hut).
But yes. I have a very negative opinion on horses. You have a positive opinion on horses. Discussing things in a civil manner (you being a bit more civil than me I must confess) is a great thing to spend your time with.

If you dig into Jeb's instagram, he has an in-game picture of his character riding a horse. It's pretty safe to say horses are involved with 1.6, same goes along with Mojang working with the creator of Mo' Creatures.
I still have no idea what everyone is complaining about. It's like adding something people have been requesting for years is going to somehow kill the game. It won't. It's like when the Ender Dragon was being added, people thought Minecraft lost uniqueness. When 1.0 finally came out, no one gave a damn about the thing other than how easy it is to fight. In Fact, close to half the features of 1.8-1.0 were complained for taking Minecraft's "uniqueness" away when those updates came out. Today? No one gives a damn.
We haven't even had a snapshot, just a picture of a probably unfinished feature.
The Enderdragon had a purpose. It was not there before. It is not about uniqueness, but the point to something. If we have something (let us call it XYZ) and is not as good as it could be. Would it make sense to make an entirely new thing or optimize XYZ ?

Dragons again. Isn't it wonderful how closely related our stories are, yet how apart they seem?
I finally got around to reading chapter 25. As always, and as it always will be, amazingly done. SPOILER ALERTI must say that the way you portrayed the battle was quite interesting. It was obvious what was going on; so obvious that it was mysterious. Actually I made that up to make it sound cooler but it didn't work. Anyway, very well done.
