posted a message on A better crowd-sourced Minecraft API
After the recent Bukkit development scare, I was reminded that Mojang was initially working on a crowd-sourced API at mojang/workbench, but then stopped.

I would like to start a discussion on what the community would like the Minecraft API to look like. This'll be an experiment of an API designed by the community, or crowd-sourced. We'll do this by constructing a skeleton of the API by Java interfaces, and hopefully later on we can move on to actually implementing the API.

My dream would be to have the community design an API through and through and eventually have Mojang patch their client and server to support the API, and then everyone will be happy. I don't wish to fragment the current API ecosystem further(with Forge, MCP, Bukkit, Spout, etc. as current contenders), but rather design an API with the goal of having the community support it and it being useful and usable.

I've started a repository here on github to organize this discussion. I've also started a few issues to begin discussion on certain aspects of the API. In addition, I created a poll in this thread to measure if people would actually use an API that is designed this way. I would love to get contributions so we can make an API that we would all like to use. I would also appreciate any thoughts on this project.

MD, thank you for the very well-though-out response to this situation. I really like this idea. My concern with it is: if I'm a user, and have a creative world, what is my incentive to move into the survival world, other than to be able to interact with everyone else? I know that's a big incentive, but we might find that many of the users end up piddling around in the creative world, and we would lose them. It's difficult to find a solution that solves every aspect of this. :/

Well, the first world doesn't have to be creative. Maybe the first world people join will be survival, and then members have a survival and creative world. That way, if people want the creative world, they have to go through the first one. And we can add some monetary incentive for becoming a member, like 10,000$ or maybe a diamond pickaxe? There's still lots of different incentives we could add.

An alternative to whitelisting I see some servers do is a greylist type thing, where everyone can come on to the server, but new members play on a separate world. Once you've played on that world long enough, admins can decide if you're a good fit(or if you're just a jerk) and be greylisted to the main world, where only greylisted people play. We could even make it so the Builder rank or lower plays on the separate world, or maybe the first world is creative and if someone builds a nice-enough building they're in. Anyway, there's a lot of options, and I see several advantages and disadvantages to this method.

    Advantages
    • People can join the server on a whim
    • People still have playing experience even if they aren't greylisted
    • People have a feel for how the server is and if they fit, if they don't they can just leave
    • Any griefers can only grief stuff that is a few days old, by that time the builder either moved on or got into the separate world
    • If the filtration method is good enough, protection can be removed
    • Flexible filtration method -- kindness, building, reaching the End, getting an achievement, etc.
    Disadvantages
    • WORK! The work required by staff is the same, if not more, than using a whitelist(except if we use karma, as I describe below)
    • People can still be discouraged from playing on the server(but if they are, they probably don't want to play anyway)
    • Griefers still have something to grief, even if it is useless to
    • The server needs to handle two worlds(I don't think this is actually a problem, but who knows)
    • Setup may take a while
If we were to actually use this method, I recommend a karma system for getting people onto the server. Let's set a karma limit of 1000 in order to be greylisted automatically, for instance. Staff can award you karma for good things you did(and it gives players instant feedback to if what they did was appreciated or not), and you automatically gain karma from mining, harvesting, etc. When you're awarded for a good deed, let's say you get 300 karma. Then if you mine 1 stone, you get 0.25 karma. Or if you mine 1 diamond, you get 2 karma. Or maybe if you build a nice house you get 600 karma. You get the idea. Once I got 1000 karma, I get promoted automatically, and I get a command that lets me move between the first and second world, or maybe a warp to the second world.

EDIT: Note that karma can work downwards too. To solve swearing, get a good enough catcher that it catches 50% of swearing and automatically add -2(or subtract 2) karma points. Give admins a command like /karma <player> <reason>, where <reason> is a keyword that if used, subtracts 2 karma. If a player gets below, say, -200 karma, they're banned automatically.

The system needs to be weighted so that the player spends maybe 1 hour-2 hours on the first world(make sure they are dedicated) and then they are brought to the second world. As long as you can't get all your karma from a generator of some sort(like an XP farm or something), this system is nearly bulletproof. Stackoverflow uses karma automatically, and it works for them like a charm. I haven't seen a server that does this, but I think it would be pretty awesome(and I can code a plugin that does do karma).

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Take them with a grain of salt or use them. :Pig:

EDIT: Karma doesn't have to just apply to greylisting. Maybe after the greylist world only building houses or doing good deeds gets you karma. Would be a good system, because admins don't need to keep track of history, it's all there. Take a look at yeahwh.at.

I made a pointer to the IP from a domain name - haventerrace.tk, just for fun. You can type it in Minecraft and it'll connect, and you can view the dynmap at haventerrace.tk:8123. You don't have to use the domain name, of course.

You may want to consider Azure.

Azure is a small, awesome, dedicated survival server. We are a small community. Everyone knows everyone. It is open 24/7 and is whitelisted. It is a bukkit-run server, and it has a few plugins. These plugins do not thoroughly change the game beyond recognition; they only enhance the experience. They include some anti cheat/grief, dynmap, chest lock, anti-creeper, and a custom tp plugin, TP+.

    minecraft ip: play.saiil.tk
    dynmap: play.saiil.tk:8123

You have been whitelisted(Assuming your username is caf77), so come on anytime and check us out. Enjoy your stay, we'll be glad to have you.

Why do you want to join (Why are you good for are server? Any Expertise?): I host my own server. It is also small, but i am not sure about that for its future. I know my way around plugins, and i can build quite nicely, ranging from shops to homes, spawns to temples. anything really. I know a good bit about redstone as well.

posted a message on Terrain Seeds Are Useless! And Here's Why (Poll Added)
I completely agree with everything here. On that, there would be no sense in elaborating. However, I would like to add an additional change to the biomes: grass color. I so miss the rich, green, beautiful grass and trees in 1.7. It made the landscape so much richer and prettier. Now, we have this ugly, dull light shade of green for most of the terrain. I say, bring back the old colors! Even if the terrain itself is different, a change of the colors would be so nice. And you don't have to recode anything... there's a certain .png(I forgot the name) that you can just change the gradients of and you're set.

It still says "You are not white-listed on this server!" when I try and join.

You sure? I tried fixing it and I hope it works now...
