I challenge everyone to be the first to get 100 blocks on 3 boosters. Starts now, and whoever wins gets my constant praise and becomes ruler of the internetz.

    Current record-76-Me-The Tower MKII
    2nd-75-Me-The Tower
    3rd-Formivore-50-The Jolly Creeper

I just tested this, and the standard half block 3T cannon goes 38.

Come on guys. One of us is going to do this.

this sounded fun so i will try a few to see what i can get. initial tests with the simplest of cannons gets me into 3rd place so far with 65 according to your list. here's the recording:

    *snip*
maybe i'll mess around with a few more designs later. if i get any better results i'll throw up another video.

Your cannon fired while the TNT was in the air, so it got better than mine, which fired when the TNT was resting on the half block, and got 38. In your video, the front of your explosion was 63-4, so the actual TNT would have been around 59-60, which was what I was measuring. I think that your way is more accurate, so we should use that. That means bump up all my records 3-4 blocks.

when i first started measuring range i used the epicenter of the damage area too but then i just figured the farthest block destroyed by the projectile was the actual maximum range. maybe i just like that extra 3-5 blocks added to my distance :smile.gif: but seriously i do think it is the most accurate.

on the testing front i tried a cannon that had the 3 tnt dropped on top of each other instead of in a row. this only gave me 67-68 meters, so not much of an improvement. however, when i built the same cannon, 25 meters in the air it went around 80ish meters.

i don't know if using the elevation of the cannon to make the propellant fly farther is legit in your challenge or if you just meant from ground level, but i do think it is a way to get more out of your propellant tnt so to me it is a legit tool to use.

but it's your challenge so the "winner" would be up to your guidelines i suppose.

love the new delay blocks so far and i haven't really used them too much yet. i was able to get the mightymax design closer to the ground, allowing for one more tnt propellant to be used without airburst (15 now instead of 14 previously).

i am also trying out some same plain stuff now because this is a little easier to adjust.

the only bad thing is that it kind of negates all the trail and error work that anyone put into coming up with a timer in the past, but the benefits far outweigh any hurt feelings about a custom timer becoming obsolete.

like i said i'm working with some same plain stuff now. so far the ones that work the best look pretty close to the imperial avenger and jolly creeper designs, but if i come up with anything that is not like what we've seen before i'll post video and the save on this thread.

does anyone know if there is a way to make a door stay open for an extended period of time with a button? im trying to add 2 iron doors to the front of a new cannon i have designed to make it SMP safe(peeps cant get in)
if it isnt possible then it looks like i will need a new defense system for the cannon

a T Flip-Flop built like the diagrams in the wiki with a button for the input and the output to your doors will cause the doors to open and stay open with one button push and close when the button is pushed again.

Everybody knows the great 1/2 block cannon, right? Well, I reinvented the cannon. My idea, on average, extends the range of a cannon by about 7-20 blocks, depending on the power of the cannon. (I would post an image showing the shots, but I can't figure out how, I'm not usually a forum user, and I don't want to link it to my personal storage site...)

    Anyway.

My idea is to ENTIRELY get rid of the 1/2 block. However, my idea works with the same theory... But instead, using... Cake.

From what I can tell, the arc actually goes slightly up... I think it is because the cake does NOT take up the full block.

Just throwing that out there. Would like someone to try and confirm this.

Also, I invented a cannon which can work in the nether, which you have to use lava... But then I misplaced :tnt: and it blew up...

interesting ideas. i tested both the cake launch block and the lava instead of water.

with the cake the theory is correct. i got more arch than with a same plane cannon, but less arch than the half step, giving me about 20 more meters in distance on my longest shot over my half step cannon.

the lava worked but had one major issue, it flows slower than water so when the propellant is triggered the lava doesn't completely flow through all the propellant, causing the cannon to explode. but, this was just a simple test, better results may be achieved by say, dropping the propellant into the center of a 3 wide channel leaving an empty space in the front (between propellant and projectile) as well as in the back, this way it is totally immersed right away, preventing the cannon from blowing up. further experimentation is needed.

all in all, two very good ideas that are worth checking out in my opinion...

i think people will still debate till their dying breath on this one, no matter what the results.

personally, i think it adds to the experience in that it is another sizable project that you can build that takes time and effort and has a reward. you don't have to have one on your main save or your smp server if you think it's a cheat or whatever, but it is kind of a neat thing that you can do as a side project on a test world.

some say the game mechanics need to be changed to prevent these from working but i feel like the more options you have in game the better and if they start making changes to the game mechanics that limit what can be done in game it would only stifle creativity.

whether or not they actually get used in normal game play or on a server is up to the individual's conscience and/or the server admins.

that is my opinion, others may vary. i just wanted to put mine out there. i'm not really looking to debate or anything.

It's a LGA1366 system with 8GB per channel. Or dual LGA1366 with 4GB per channel. Durr.

    What's that supposed to be?

i think it's an illustration of the computer "Deep Thought" from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books. in the story it was the most complicated computer ever, built to answer the question of life the universe and everything. which after 10,000 years of calculating, the answer it came up with was ....42 :smile.gif:.

but seriously, the guy who posted that was saying that computer is bad ass.

as for the op, those lines represent computer usage so to "get rid of them" there are a few options.

this is what i would do, in this order:

    1. you could go through and shut down all unnecessary programs while running minecraft (the less things it's doing at one time the better it will perform)

    2. if you know how you could go in and change some of the settings for how your machine handles it's resources to maximize your machine's performance

    3. upgrade your machine (as previously mentioned)

Does anyone here have a flat map?

I'm planning to make 5 cannons connected that all shoot when you press one button. The structure will be lika this: ( :Red: =timer :Notch: = long ranged cannon :SSSS: = short ranged cannon)

    :Red: :Notch: :Notch:
    :SSSS: :SSSS: :SSSS:

http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1012&t=28474 -has flatgrass, cleanroom, and an all water map

and on page 4 of this thread close to the bottom there is a post with a link to a map that has a shooting range and building materials.

Well, i uploaded a schematic, and its not great great, but it does aim, It's not extremely good, but it does the job, and its the simplest cannon I have ever seen. Ever. It is only one block high, no inverters, it simplicity is what makes the cannon.

Try it, even when the aiming channels are the same, the aim pulls to the left, not sure why this is, but I think its because the tnt jumps left, anyway, give it a try if you want.

tried it. it is simple and it does aim and you could throw one of those down in just a couple of minutes. i'm not thrilled about the efficiency, but in a pinch it would do.

however, personally would use a simplified version of my design (sans timer). i just tried it and was able to get shooting in less than 5 minutes. it takes more blocks to build but the efficiency is slightly better and well, i have more practice aiming it of course.

not to take anything away from yours though, it would work for it's intended purpose.

and about the pulling to one direction, every cannon design i have tried does tend to pull from one side or the other depending on which direction the cannon is fired. i also think this is because of the "bounce" of the projectile, but it may have something to do with water flow too, i'm not sure.

that is why when i shoot my cannon straight i use the two guides to ensure the shot doesn't pull to one side or the other. which, unfortunately, costs some distance due to added friction.

After a quick test, I found out that yes, It is extremely possible to make a simple cannon aimable, it doesn't use any tricks like having the tnt below ground or anything like that, it just utilizes two extra channels on the direct side of the missle, that use booster tnt, this will give force in two directions, left and right, although I doubt angled shots can be achieved by this, I think if someone took the time to perfect this design, it may work, i ran into some trouble with trying to invert the wire because it was not reaching the end, so it is only a prototype design.

    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
:cobblestone: :Water: :Water: :Water: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: <Ammunition block
    :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:

This is how I tested it, I simply added this channel on the side of the ammo tnt, and it worked extremely well, as a matter a fact, I am going to pursue this further.

I don't know if anyone has done this, but I still find it to be a fun experiment.

Can someone give me some feedback please?

i'd like to see the finished product when you are done to see what kind of control you can get with your aiming.

currently the best aiming system i've come up with is on the m13 mighty max cannon that i built (on page 7 of this thread). it utilizes a 3 wide water channel that can be fired straight when the projectile is placed in the center half block or at virtually any angle you want using the right and left blocks and adjusting where and how much propellant is placed on either side of the water channel. (not sure if i explained that very well, but there is a demo video in the post about that cannon)

i see, is there any way to buy external memory for this? or just another graphics card off ebay? My laptop has 3024 MB ram, so if it uses that, is that enough?

not external(i don't think), but some computers don't come with the max memory they can hold, this includes laptops. you may have extra unused slots or you may be able to buy larger capacity sticks to replace what you have. just check the specs on you laptop, calling the company that made it's support if you need too, to see what your situation is.

also, if you are not sure what you are doing, have someone do the installation for you, but it is not that hard.

so yeah, you probably can upgrade your memory, and if your video card uses system memory, then the more total memory you have the better off you will be.

    edit:

hello, i get 20-40 FPS on short/Fast, i want to buy a Iogear GUC2020DW6 USB 2.0 External DVI Graphics Card off ebay for $88, i googled the specs, any info, would this work?

try the memory upgrade first. it may be cheaper and even if it doesn't help your video capability that much you will have more ram for your system to work with, which is always a good thing.

cut down a tree and get some stone with a wood pickaxe, then make a stone sword, kill some spiders for string and chickens for feathers, then break some gravel for flint and you got your bow and arrow makings.

once you have a bow and some arrows, shoot creepers.

    Easier said than done >___>

nah, you could be creeper hunting in a half hour or less.

of course this is nowhere near as efficient as a mob spawner, but it requires a lot less building...
