I'd definitely appreciate some input on how these should be crafted, placed and orientated. II'm not sure yet! I'm okay at redstone, I just think that it should be possible to make a simple thing like a gate without taking up the huge amount of space that it requires to build a 5x5 piston door.

Ever built a grand entrance to your base, but wished that it could be barred against mobs or invaders?

Well maybe with my idea it can!

A 3 high 3 wide 1 deep fence configuration (or bigger) would form a gate entity and could be raised and lowered into the ceiling or ground by a rope and pulley system (or by pistons)

This rope and pulley system could also be used as an elevator on servers or to bring chests and players directly up and down mineshafts. I think it would also add an an aesthetic that has been missing from mines and shipyards.

You could connect the rope and pulley system to the daylight sensor so that the gates of your city would automatically close at night.

Is it feasible to make something like this an option in the regular game? Not everybody knows how to use mods. And if you download too many they start conflicting and crash the game.

I really like this idea. It's very complicated, making it a little simpler would be nice. I outlined a similar idea here http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2774030-useful-npcs/. However I fully support the idea of factions!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm not much of a computer person, so mods are hard to download. I have checked into milleniare, but it seems like they do the building, not you, which is the downside to an otherwise brilliant mod.

Could you please elaborate why you think that it wouldn't fit well into vanilla? It seems to me like all my idea would be asking would be to upgrade the villager's AI so that it is more intractable, and re-skin them. That's just my personal preference though.

So my idea has to do with the villagers. Minecraft is a lonely game in single player. What if you could bring the villagers into your society?!

My idea is this. A villager is being attacked or besieged by zombies. You save him and offer him a job in your castle/base. He does this job in exchange for food, a house (like the housing requirements for a villager currently), and of course protection from mobs.

You have become the lord of a castle, with a society and an economy.

When the villager's happiness standards have been met (supplied him with food and a shelter that his/her AI recognizes as his/her home), they will work for you.

Miners, you would have to supply with a pickaxe or multiple pickaxes and give them simple instructions.

Eg. you can tell them to dig a 3 wide 3 tall mineshaft, that is 100 blocks long, equip them with one iron pick and 10 stone ones and he will fill up a chest with all of the mined resources from that shaft over time. e.g. (850cobblestone 35coal, 15iron)

Farmers would tend and harvest one or more crops or animal pens. (Supply them with animal feed and hoes and food and a house)

Builders would help you fill in the parts of your building that would take you a long time, and bore you.

If you wanted to build a wall that was five blocks thick, ten blocks high and 20 blocks long, and you wanted to focus on the more detailed building aspects, your builder could save you sometime.

Soldiers would stand guard by your city gates or your valuables and fight mobs.

Some of you might say it would take the fun out of the game, but I just think it would take the tedium out of survival. If you want to build an immense awesome base, but don't want to spend a couple hours slaving away at stone after stone, you can pay a villager (in food) to help you finish it faster.

I think the game is more fun when your accomplishments benefit other people that you know won't grief your castle.

I am not a programmer, so i need help getting this noticed. If you like it let me know and share it. If you have extensions to this idea I am more than willing to hear what could make this more awesome.

I like the new trading update for the villagers, that's a step in the right direction. However I still find the villager skin ugly, and think that they should look more like players.

(I have not yet decided on skins, or if they would breed like other NPCs in the game.) Help me out? It's an idea in progress. Thanks so much guys.

I agree. I think it looks weird when biomes go from desert to forest to tundra etc. within a couple dozen blocks. Maybe add camels? Scorpions? Lots of potential.

posted a message on Boats Evolved; bigger, modular boats
I definitely agree! Support Modular boats! I love the chest idea, and the sails, but let's keep it in the spirit of mine craft and not use and engines. Sails are nice, maybe oars on smaller boats? I think rather than cannons, there should be some sort of mounted crossbow. Maybe I'm wrong but it feels like engines and guns are too modern for mine craft. Oh and don't forget grappling hooks!

PS. I also think that boats should be custom designable, up to a certain size. If anyone's interested PM me and I'll share more details.
