It'd be nice if you could stop hostile mobs from vanishing and keep them around for good, either as ornamentation or for use in games/challenge maps.
I suggest that hostile mobs not despawn if they are directly adjacent to iron bars. They can still die, but not vanish on their own when the player moves away.
This way you could have monster zoos, or press a button to release monsters from cages, and do all kinds of other fun things.
As for in game logic as to why monsters don't vanish (if that's really necessary) it can simply be that cold iron prevents their magical disappearance powers.

I said that because I could foresee how many people would interpret the idea, I do know that it's lazy, but that's the whole point.
It doesn't take "three seconds to click the ground". You have to a) wait for the leaves to decay or break the leaves yourself. If this was implemented then it would still be beneficial to the player by sticking around to pick up the leaf drops because the apples that can drop wouldn't plant would they?
The criticisms on this thread should be about actual technical problems with saplings auto-planting, not with being lazy.

Thought having the items go straight to enderchest inventory is probably simpler and better for mass mining.
