I am getting this problem too.
The game had been working fine, but now as soon as I start the program it gives this error. I am on Vista and also have the latest version of Java installed.
EDIT: When I rebooted, the problem fixed itself. Still annoying. As is all the crashes... but somehow MC is still so good I keep playing.
