I run Windows 7 64-bit.
I have Java 8 update 40, both 64 and 32 bit.
By reinstalling Java, I was finally able to get the Minecraft launcher to start. However, I get this whenever I try to play:

My Java-proficient friend thinks Minecraft is having trouble calling to and getting information from some online service, so after numerous wipes and clean reinstalls of MC and Java I gave it full permission through all firewalls...still won't work.
I'm rather frustrated, as I've been trying this for days now.
As stated, numerous uninstalls and reinstalls of Java and Minecraft have done nothing. I cannot play offline or online.
Hopefully there's a solution.
I bought Minecraft in December of 2011 and haven't been able to play since. Luckily, I was distracted until now by the Xbox 360 Edition! But, now I want to actually play the game I paid $30 for on my PC.
Anyway, as soon as I downloaded MC onto my laptop I tried to log in. At first it wouldn't let me, so I changed my password and all that and then it said the whole "Can't connect to Minecraft.net" thing. It also wouldn't let me play either offline or through a browser.
So, after a little over a year of Xbox 360 craftin' I decided to try again on my PC. Same thing is happening, and I've reinstalled and restarted and reset my password and imported my Minecraft purchase to the email I had already purchased it with (since it wasn't registering my account/email on Mojang or Minecraft.net, or that I had ever even thought about purchasing it).
So now I've gotten the Minecraft.net stuff squared away and it says I've purchased the game and verified my account and username and all that. My password and stuff all work, but still- every time I open the Minecraft launcher, I get the same error. First, it tells me it can't connect to Minecraft.net. Then it won't let me play offline. I've already downloaded the game twice now, and I am out of ideas!
Any suggestions? I'd rather not email Mojang due to their backlog of emails so I figured I would just ask here.
