Too lazy to click the link? This is the math the Redditor came up with.
1024 x 1024 = 1,048,576 <-- Number of surface blocks. 1 chunk = 16x16 = 256 1,048,576 / 256 = 4096 chunks Average of about 3 diamonds per chunk, so 4096 x 3 = 12,288.
I'm more worried about the amount of sand... not diamonds. Even if I do get a desert seed there still may not be enough. Well mabye there would be if the entire 1000x1000 was sand for a couple of levels down.
I don't really care about how big the area is necessarily... my main complaint is the limited amount of resources. I won't be able to build anything that I planned on building because it is highly improbable that there are enough resources within that limited space.
