Sorry for the double post, I thought I'd mention I had someone join the server and was quite helpful to make suggestions.
The spawn room is larger and currently still being set up with new info signs, but the basics are there.

I plan to add one more ring, of more, yet less important information, and easy access into and out from it. I'm not fancy on the /help menu plugins, so I'm going to be coding one up later this week.

i dont think big servers suck up more players (matter of speaking, duh)

alot of people like a small server: better community, more peacefull, and less problems against other players

I'd have to agree, If I were to join a server, I'd rather join one fairly small, but not tiny, as too much could be going on to get much done. By which I mean, trying to talk to a player while chat is being scrambled or people barging in here and there.

I've tried fixing up the Server Guest room on my server, but not a lot has been different new player wise. Did get a couple new members recently, though friends of people already on the server, which isn't bad.

That /give override thing to /kill is awesome.

Thought I'd check to see any posts have come along before I hit the bed, glad to see the first post is a great one to see.

I looked up the macro in the settings, the /me command that is run after words:

/me needs to learned to read the /rules before cheating.

posted a message on New players being discuraged of staying on server
I've been running a server since early March of last year, been learning the tricks of this and that on my own. Rarely visiting other servers.
I have seen and used a few ideas here and there, and coming up with my own over time. Though my server is small, a 10 slot, it's been hard to get active players on the server for the past few months. Most of the people that are fairly active are people I know in real life.

First I thought some stuff just isn't kept up to date and managed on a regular basis, as I work and go to college, let alone real life.

The server originally created with the idea of doing what you want with the features at hand (we have a fair number of plugins). The server was kept to just real life friends as we figured out this and that; the basics pretty much.

After deciding to go public, we put in some protection features, added a default Guest group, BigBrother at the time, now Hawkeye. Currently we have more.

We've added the server to some public MC server listings to get the name out, and I've added the server to my sig to help show it around.

Logically, it seemed like things were going just fine. When we did get people on the server. They instantly get mad because they can't edit or use certain features or commands, or even blame us for false-advertising. Yes we say we have survival and creative worlds, but that doesn't mean all the worlds are both survival and creative.

We have been adapting to users complaints in some forms, other complaints ignored for obvious reasons. We've implemented and mostly enforce SpoutCraft to cut down on hacker/cheaters. I know there's ways around spoutcraft, we're mostly fighting the xray issue. If a player joins without SpoutCraft, they are in the Default group, even if they were in a different group, temporarily, then they will be moved back when they log out and join back in with spoutcraft.

Currently, we have made a special room with rings of glowstone with signs on them. First ring is blunt and to the point, as we have gotten tired of repeating the same thing over and over to answer "why can't I do this or that" and "how do I become a member?"

Once they at least read the first ring of info and come along the sign of how to exit that ring, they will teleport to the next ring. A more friendlier ring of quick info. This is the last ring, and they will see a sign, as before, which will teleport them out.

By this point, they are just looking around or have become a member.

To become a member, we kept it simple. They read the rules, state they agree in chat (even implemented a /agree chat macro for the command dedicated players), and be using spoutcraft. Server staff can easily tell if the user is using spoutcraft with a small command. Then promote them to the Member group. No auto ranking; keeps back random griefers from joining when no one is on to keep an eye on them. Currently we have 13 server rules, which will be overhauled in the revamping of the server, as we are attempting to add a form of a theme to give players a somewhat goal.

While watching the server log while I'm at my PC, if I'm on the server or not, I've noticed, with the use of a command logging plugin, some people don't even use the first command to leave the first ring, yet they just leave. I've set up a global warp for default users to access if they want to look around. I'm guessing they're not seeing that sign.

I have, on the other hand, seen people start trying to use commands that we don't use on the server, such as /give, which I set up an override macro to use the /kill command followed by an emote chat message. I haven't witnessed anyone yet, but have heard there has been a couple.

Suggestions, question, remarks are welcome. We would open the server to more slots, but as we don't seem to get any higher than 8 at most, why pay more. Yes I'm paying for a host, I live in a college dorm with fluctuating internet speeds and random power outages (about 2 a year on average) mostly relating to town issues (storm or random occurrences).

Yes it is, I've spent a few hours a day standing at a spider spawn harvester to get the string needed (with help from my friends.
If you want pics of the spider farm, I have no problem. I will not allow those who I do not know in RL join my server though. I've set precautions in case the IP got out.

I've used up all the dispensers I made on the first wall and part of the corner. I think I may have 20-30 left in one of my chests.
I will say this, the tombstone plugin has saved me more than once when I fell off the walkways and the top part of the walls while working.

    >>This is ALL Legit<<
I may be an admin on my server, but everything is gathered and made by me and my friends on the server.
No admin abilities were used in the making of this.
    Plugin list in this post

I've been working on a castle idea and started working on it about 3-4 weeks ago. Been working on it off and on, and quite pleased what I got done so far.
Please note, I am a college student, and I have a life and a g/f, so I'm not wasting that much time of my life playing the game.

I'm doing this on my own server with a few friends, but I've requested little help from them. Mostly the clearing for the base and the use of their excess materials.
The server uses CraftBukkit with, what many people would say "TOO MANY PLUGINS!" It runs just fine. (I use Hosted Game Server)

The size of the castle is done by towny. 5x4 (will expand to 5x5 due to my own mistake) plot area with config setting set to 32x32 block area (default being 16x16 I believe).

The wiring would be tricky if I set a whole wall to one pressure-pad/button. So everything will be done in sections. Roughly every 30 blocks (one extender per floor).

Yes, I know this is overkill, actually thought of it when I heard about the dispensers, not a copy of the overkill video with the cake, but it did show a good example to my friends the idea of my defenses.

My friends and I don't fight, so this whole idea may seem useless, I on the other hand want to do something large, so this is my first attempt at something big.

First Stage: Clearing and flattening base. Done.
Second Stage: Walls and Walkway. In Progress.
Third Stage: Wiring dispensers. (There's so many!!!).
    - Gate(s) and Drawbridge(s) will be placed where Wiring accepts without conflicts.
Fourth Stage: Setting up Canons. :tnt:
Fifth Stage: Setting up on-activation lava walls (Flaming arrows is the idea.) (Might use MagnetBlock Plugin)
Sixth Stage: Undecided at this time. Walls should be armed and ready. Just got to decide what to do inside.

Since I use photobucket, have for many years, I've just set up a simple album. I'll try to keep things organized.

    http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a211/ ... %20Castle/

Spider Farming. Takes a long time, usually leave my game idling while doing other stuff. Sometimes friends do this for me and make the dispensers for me as well. I really need to redesign this, since drops touching cacti removes them.

    Section of the first wall:

    View from an angle

    Extending up and out

Work on some of the circuitry. A trial attempt. (Removed circuitry later when I found out there was a corner issue.

    Night views of the back

    Night views of the front

    Day view of the front

    Beginning of the walk ways

    Corner of the walk way

    Paths Night

    Corner and Paths day

    Four corners done with paths

Extending the first wall all the way to the end.

First wall completed (as thought I did...)

    Beginning second wall

At this point, I realized that the towny plots I set up was 5x5, when it was actually 5x4. I felt like an idiot. Currently clearing out and putting down a cobble base. Then got to extend the walkways and rebuild the corners. At least I didn't fill in the mote with water just yet.

If anyone wants a video of what I have done, I don't mind. Comments and criticism would be great!

I think at one point their workers vanished. I signed up for them, they sent me an e-mail apologizing for the delay, the server will be ready in 3 business days because they were upgrading the servers transferring the data to new ones. There were decent, for about 2 days after my server was up. All I can say is, if you want to try them out, go through paypal. I did, and here in a couple days I'll get my money back.

I'm with hostedgameservers.com now and they are GREAT.

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but why must, let's say a new person joins a server, have to be put into the op list, just to play?
I can understand the griefing issue, but a person cant even go through a door. I find this to be a bit annoying.
I may be blind, but is there an alternative, like a plugin or something to help control this?

I didn't say op everyone, I said op yourself.
"Move out of the spawn area" was for everyone else joining.

So moving out of the spawn area allows you to modify the world?
Man, I've been playing for over a month and I didn't know... You just :tnt: my mind! lol

Okay, I can't seem to ftp into the machine from the same network... keeps giving me a timeout error.

And as for bukkit, that should be done via the web site right?

FTP was too problematic a protocol in the last version, so I have upgraded to SFTP (secure ftp/SCP). While a windows FTP client may not work for this, Filezilla and WinSCP are two free clients that will work with MineOS' SCP protocol

Sorry, I made the mistake of saying FTP instead of SFTP/SCP.
When you type in the IP into winSCP, make sure you tell it port 22 to be certain it accesses the right port.

The WEB UI has an option of selecting pure (vanilla) or bukkit. If you select Bukkit when creating a server, it will install bukkit for you. All you have to do is put the plugins in the plugins folder on that server via SFTP/SCP.

    Okay guys,

I like the idea behind MineOS but I'm a linux noob. I installed it on my hard drive to replace my Windows XP system because of technology restraints.

However I want to know if there is a GUI for this or if it is all command line?

    -D

Once you have the OS installed by watching the video on the home page, everything else is done view web.
To create and control the server is done by the web UI. It's <server-ip>:8080 then type in the username and password
Default is: Username: tc Password: minecraft2011

uploading your own maps and bukkit plugins is done via a ftp client. I highly suggest winSCP. Free and I know it works, since, well I use it and hasn't failed.

If you want a plain ol' vanilla run server, no plugins and such, just create it via the web UI and you are set. Let the server run on it's own, log in and play.

Sorry for wasting your time, I just updated my post about this and saw yours just now.
FireFTP does NOT work for this, I tried WinSCP and connected instantly.
