Kinda like this idea, but I think the flames' textures won't fit Minecraft's texture style(they're still great, though).
Maybe you could have an option in the config that turns the fancy textures off and replaces them with vanilla-like fire textures?
Btw I'll go and make a test mod for your custom fire (without the spreading behaviour, it'll behave like vanilla fire for now, but faster), to see if it's useful.
I'll keep you updated
