    I'm just tossing my two cents in here, but I think that what your onto here with v2.0 is exactly what the minecraft community has been looking for in a magic spellcaster mod. I think you've pretty much nailed down the progression and solved that issue. Try to look into what Thaumcraft has done for research, as you seem to be suggesting a similar system. Just be careful to make your system unique, and talk to Azanor so that you don't make the same 'mistakes' he feels he made with his research system (too many aspects, not enough exploration). I'm really excited to see what other great ideas you can come up with for progression.

    As for the affinity changes, once again you seem to be spot on. There are several issues surrounding affinities in general concerning Ars, and your suggested fix is a great one. I'm a little worried that your passive effects are a little too overpowered, but tweaking how effective they are, and maybe making them consume mana and be able to be turned on and off would solve that issue. Sometimes ice mages might not want to turn all the lava they're sneaking around into obsidian?

    As for separating your power system from the rest of the mod, I'm not sure how necessary this is, but I do see the sense in it. Then again, it might be easier to simply combine them again to make the integration that much easier on you and the players. In fact, I see a lot of benefit in using the power systems as part of the progression in the mod. It could work into research and/or spell creation. All in all, I think it's a good idea to remove the essence values from items, as you can do anything if you have enough cobblestone or a great farm. Also, I think there should be more you can do with the power system. It seems a bit lacking, more so than most things in the mod. It has it's few great uses, but overall, seems rather limited. As previously suggested, deficit was probably added as a balance measure, but it is frustrating to work with and requires constant surveillance. Often times, if a single section is removed accidentally, (breaking it to move or adjust it/creeper explosion/etc) it results in a chain reaction. Deficit needs to be reworked or removed.

    Great ideas overall, I hope to see it being worked on soon!

    posted a message on SUPERIOR ENCHANTMENT SYSTEM
    Hey Lithial, I was playing in a 1.5.2 test world and I noticed something. Thaumcraft 3 adds some enchantments that are for wands only, and they were constantly showing up on my other enchanted gear, such as bows, swords, etc. I kept getting enchantments such as Frugal and Potency. The chances of getting those wand only enchantments was extremely high. I would go into a table with a brand new bow and spend well over thirty levels trying to get any enchantment on it besides those wand enchants, unsuccessfully. Just wondering if Thaumcraft support is planned, or a quick fix can be added to always avoid those enchantments on other gear.

    Small 2-3 Sentence Description of yourself: I'm an engineering student attending university and working hard to pay for it. My free time is spent in video games. I'm also completely crazy, but that's not important right now.

    How much time could you be on the server weekly?: I'd get on at least every other day unless I get overworked from school, which would rarely happen.

    What do you know about Roleplaying? Give a definition of what it means to you: Role playing is getting out of character, and into a new one. It's a way to escape your life and create a new one with fantasy and excitement one could not normally achieve.

    What experience have you had in Roleplaying, if any?: I spend many hours daydreaming... Ah, but seriously now, I've played my fair share of D&D. If that's something to be proud of...

    In your own Words, define what the act of Meta-Gaming is: Meta-Gaming is where people have their characters act in ways that the characters should not know. Like skipping to the end of a book and changing the natural course of what their character would do. It's obviously something to avoid, as it 'breaks the spell' of role playing.

    In your own Words, define what the act of Power-Gaming is: Power gaming is where a player tries to make their character as good as possible in every which way, maxing what needs to be maxed, and minimizing what needs minimizing. I often fall victim to this, because I feel a pull towards perfection, yet I can appreciate the simplicity of having what one has, and doing all you can with it. Living a simple life sounds interesting, because I can spice it up with fantasy of adventures.

    What do you expect this server will be like?: I hope to find a great and active community and friends to make online. I hope to find a place to get away from the world at my leisure. I expect great things from you, server!

    What other server(s) have you played on and why did you leave them?: I haven't really played on any larger servers for long periods of time. I've played on a few small ones and ran a few myself, but I'm trying to find a stable server where there will always be people online.

    Biography (Please make this at least 2 paragraphs long. This must include the history of your character and his life as well as age, appearance and personality, etc.): I am a young one. I did not know much of life or ways of good and evil. I lived in a small town as a child until it was sacked by raiders. I watched as everyone I knew and loved was murdered before me and the whole village burned to ashes. I knew not who the attackers where, but I sought immediate vengeance. I ripped a knife out of a corpse and ran into the fray. Having no training whatsoever and being incredibly young, I wasn't long until I lost consciousness. Luckily, I was taken for dead and left to rot in the burning village. I awoke days later, abandoned and alone deep in the forest. I had to learn to live off of what I could scavenge, as the ways of farming and establishment eluded me.
    I was desperation incarnate, and I took the savagery of the forest into myself. I became an expert hunter and scavenger. I trained daily with the dull blades I had collected from the sacking of my home. However, now I am in my early twenties. I am master of my woods but I seek more. I seek to adventure, make a name for myself in the world, and see what other deep and dangerous places I can get myself into.

    What is your Character's ambitions?: I hope to uphold goodness in the world. I would say my alignment is Chaotic Good. It's an odd mix, but I'll stop at nothing to make sure that all that is right with the world is defended, and that evil is punished. I hope to explore the deepest and darkest caverns and prepare myself so that I can more appropriately uphold my morals, and prevent any disasters like what happened to my home from happening to anybody else.

    What is your character’s favorite tool? (sword, pickaxe, shovel, etc): My favorite tool is the sword. Any kind of blade I can get my hands on really, but long-swords are my favorite.

    What is one of your Character's most skilled talents? Growing up in the woods and living off of my own grit and nothing else, I've learned to be skilled and deadly with a blade. I am agile and swift, and strike quickly and repeatedly.

    Other Information about your Character: I'm rather shy and won't go out of my way to speak to people I don't know, and I'm slow to trust new people, although I often find myself pairing up with them. However, once somebody has earned my trust, I'm a great ally, and steadfast and generous as any could hope me to be. Also, my time spent in the woods has taught me about the various herbs (mostly through trial and error). It's not uncommon for me to to use poisoned weapons. Apart from my deadly serious and dramatic history, among friends I tend to be cheery and playful, like the child I never really got the change to grow up from.

    Open-Response-Questions

    Whilst traveling from the Cloud Temple you see a small halfling, being harassed by two armed warriors. They appear to be trying to steal money from him, how does your character respond? I'd sneak around the side, and watch from the bushes for a short while, making sure that what I thought I saw was actually occurring. It would not be the first time I freaked out over what was a small rustle among friends. I'm not used to such things, as I have spent most of my life alone. Once I was sure that the halfling's life was in danger, or that the bandits were mugging him, I would charge in and incapacitate the warriors or die trying. Should I be victorious, I would question the halfling, and make sure that the items were his. If they were, I'd give him his things back. However I'd be suspicious that he wasn't a thief himself, so I'd be wary and not try to kill the warriors if I could avoid it. But I'm a reckless person.

    Your character wanders into Alras, and comes across a small stall, behind which a well dressed man is standing. He’s offering various wares, the merchant turns to you and says in a posh accent " 'ello there, what can I do you for today?" What is your character response? I'd ask very roughly if he had anything particularly deadly on him. Depending on his response, I'd either try to buy said weapon (though I don't have much money on me usually), or I'd reply with a curt response if the answer was no, as say something like "Well that makes one of us." And I'd keep on walking.

    Whilst wandering in the wilds, your character comes across a small hut, which looks abandoned. Inside it you see a chest containing a few iron bars, and a golden sword. How would your character respond?: I'd immediately grab the sword, wonder if it was better than my own, or how much I could sell it for. The iron bars aren't worth my attention unless I can fork them over later for some food of some sort.

    Hungry and lost in the wilderness, you stumble across a small trading camp nestled among the forest, they greet you you in the common tongue, how do you respond? Why am I hungry and lost in the wilderness? I might be lost, but I wouldn't care, but I'd never let myself go hungry. However should such a scenario actually occur, I'd make friendly with the new people, and offer to trade whatever I had for a bite to eat and some directions towards the nearest place to fight some bad guys. I would leave before night fell because I would not trust the people, and I'm used to sleeping in the woods.

    You hear word that bandits occupy the road outside the town in which you have been staying. The town guard have gathered, and are asking for assistance to help eliminate them. The leader of the party is offering a reward for any who offer their support. How does your character act on this information?: Well this is assuming I'm not the leader of the bandit raid, which I would try to be if I could. However if I had just stumbled into town when the raid was under way, I'd go out of my way to try to help them. I'd give what extra weapons I had to those that needed them, and I'd run into the fray with the biggest battle cry of them all. No reward necessary other than a hot meal afterwards, and the satisfaction of a good deed done.

    SIDE NOTE: This all might seem like I'd be reckless and break some rules with how haphazard and dangerous my character is, but I assure you, I'll follow all the rules and behave honorably in game. This is all just role playing, right?

    I usually don't post here, but this seed I just found is too good to go unnoticed. It's my new favorite, and it wins by a long shot. The more I explore it, the better it gets, especially to the east of spawn.

    It's:
    World of Trees and Sky


    Even sounds majestic doesn't it? It's essentially some cool mountains around spawn, with some cool lakes with nice overhangs and strange floating outcroppings of rock, like little islands, and as you go out, there is a few rather large deserts, and one MASSIVE ocean. It's got a little bit of everything, and best of all, its got some REALLY nice resources in all the caves. Overall, I found that the seeds with just GIANT mountains with huge outcroppings were rather difficult to play on, and they were good for more or less gwacking at as you run away from tons of monsters. My very favorite thing about this seed is that it is extremely livable. The terrain is beautiful, but not so treacherous that you can't even build a decent house anywhere. Hope you all try it out!

    EDIT: oh yeah, did I forget to mention that there is clay seriously EVERYWHERE!? :biggrin.gif:

    Firstly, You enjoyed Minecraft before achievements, is it really that hard to enjoy it now? Do you really think that this in any way takes the fun out of the game, by simply adding a little tutorial mode for new players? Achievements in Minecraft obviously aren't the only thing that will keep players entertained, as you were entertained before they were implemented, and they didn't change the game-play at all.

    Secondly, as for the learning while doing comment, notice how the achievements don't spell out EXACTLY how to craft each item? It simply says that the item is craft-able, and that you should figure out how to make it. All of those 'make this tool' achievements are only in place to let players know that the tools exist. They still need to figure out how to make them themselves. That's still learning while doing, just with a small nudge in the right direction. For instance, I had no clue you could make a hoe for the longest time. When I finally noticed the item in the crafting square while I was making a pick-axe, I had no clue what it was or what it could be used for. I ignored it until I noticed that you could farm. The achievements fix this 'blundering about' problem that new players have.

    Lastly, Notch specifically said that the achievements he will add will NOT be chores, such as destroying so many blocks, etc. He said they will be fun, creative challenges that you can complete, such as the ride a pig off of a cliff achievement. You don't need to worry about that problem.

    Or if the achievements are still getting your panties in a bunch, you can simply ignore them. It's not hard to pretend something doesn't exist. Just pretend they aren't there and POOF, your precious Minecraft is EXACTLY the same as it was before the update...

    Well one could look at this as improving the rain. And it is broken. Rain still falls underwater. It should splash as it hits the surface of the water. It doesn't. Next time its raining dive under and look at the rain and tell me it isn't still needing improvements. Troll.
