posted a message on [Creation] The Rebuilding of Venetia
Since July 2011, I have been working on a project. This project was recreating a Warcraft 3 map in Minecraft, and it is finally finished. Details, images and download below.

    Basic Overview:
    • Venetia is a 4 player Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne melee map, and is named (4)Venetia
    • The Minecraft version of Venetia attempts to look exactly like the Warcraft 3 map, thus, all the goldmines are facing the same direction; The only replication failure was the Waygates: making them on an angle was nigh impossible
    • Minecraft does not officially support Real Time Strategy gameplay, but I would think it an interesting concept for players to try
    • The Minecraft map is rather large, being 26.25 chunks2(inside the map bounds), and would work great for defensive/offensive games in online servers (try it)

The Warcraft 3 map aerial shot and minimap

    The final Minecraft recreation

    • Every structure/object (except the rowboat) was originally built by hand, MCEdit only served to copy&paste or change massive features (like move a 4x4x12 support 1 block (true story))
    • Trees were planted and grown using bonemeal, none were destroyed and replanted
    • I used a 1:5 scale; every 5 blocks in Minecraft was 1 grid square in the Warcraft editor
    • Each grid square in Minecraft was depicted by a glass block in the bottom-left corner (which is why they populate the progression screenshots)
    • The total distance from bedrock wall to bedrock wall is 420 blocks; The map is square
    • The materials used match (as closely as possible) the texture from Warcraft 3. I created a tiny texture pack to make the map look better (included in the download)
    • Most of the materials are cloth/wool. Enjoy burning it down!
    • Most of the map was built in a changing environment. When this was started, the biomes were ideal for the map, but as Minecraft got closer to the 1.0 release, biome changes became worse (horrible after 1.0 where half the map was in a snow biome)
    • The final version of mcVenetia is on a flatland map free of biomes (and at regular 64 height: no slimes)
    • I have no intentions on continuing to recreate maps, nor am I interested in taking requests

    Details

    • The map is free for the public to view and use. If you create anything with this, please give me credit.
    • The texture pack is also free to use and modify (give me credit if you use it)
    • The Warcraft 3 "(4)Venetia" map belongs to Blizzard
    • Things I used for this include: MCEdit, Cartograph G, Too Many Items (prior to creative mode), Single Player Commands (prior to creative)

    • The first recorded screenshot was taken in July 2011; way back in mid Beta
    • The map was not worked on solidly for this time, rather more sporadically up until December
    • The map isn't all for looks; Waygates contain a portal to the Nether (which is literally a hallway to the other portal). You need not have to take the journey across the map if you don't wish to
    • All the structures can be entered, although the vast majority of them contain nothing
    • Goldmines currently contain beds (mimicking Warcraft's starting locations) and the spawn is inside the Tavern in the middle

    • The terrain is done, but I have no intention on leaving this to die here. I plan on adding dungeons and alike across the map in the future; The end result will have an RPG feel
    • The reason I have posted this right now is to get feedback from the public. Please post your ideas for the maps future

    Progression Image Gallery

    • I took a total of 19 "update" captures with Cartograph G; I compiled them into a gif below
    • A couple updates (mostly the ending ones) have odd glitches in them (whited out wool, lines through water/trees...etc.) This is due to a glitch with MCEdit and Cartograph G; the only fix I know of is to update the chunk again (place&destroy a block); Minecraft was unaffected
    • Snow became a huge issue as of Update 14. I quickly brought the map over to a flatland world where snow would no longer be a bother. Everything outside the map bounds is back down at layer 4 (slime assault)

To spare your lives, I added a spoiler to contain the rest (there's a number of them)

    Download:
    Venetia Download

    How to download?
The zip file contains 2 folders: The save folder "Venetia_Final" and a zipped texture pack file "Warcraft 3 Textures"
To access the Minecraft folder on windows: press the Windows-Key+R; type %appdata%/.minecraft; press enter
Place the "Venetia_Final" folder in your saves folder
Place the zipped texture pack in the texture pack folder (don't unzip it)

I keep getting weird maps I see Lines with black and red dots through the map and the map itself isnt complete
    only black stuff.
What is wrong with my maps?

Tried it with new maps they are fine there :S
No idea why it fails :/

I've got a similar issue (weird things happening to the graphics in cartograph g). I think it relates to MCEdit: every chunk edited in MCEdit gets odd lines in the leaves, whited-out cloth blocks and random orangy lines here and there (among other stuff). Once you place/destroy a block in the chunk in-game (including if it snows) it will get fixed (really annoying when you edited a total of 150 chunks).

Hope this gets fixed at some point. I'm going to have to use a new mapper until then.

I cant wait for the next update with the jungle biomes. There's so much one could do with that and a city!

Being the player I am, I got the weekly "screenshot". First thing that came to mind when I saw a jungle (they are awesome) was to build a jungle village (which is currently a WIP). I'm not thinking of adding a section on building in biomes (like deserts, jungles and swamps), basically using abundant materials to create a fitting village. In layman's terms:

I can't believe you're the only one who noticed so far. Fewer people must be using WorldPainter than I thought... :sad.gif:

I must disagree. I've been using WorldPainter since the thread was only a page long (and it has only gotten better). However, I hardly ever use trees, I mostly modify the terrain for creative/challenge maps, or when I'm bored.

I'd suggest pictures, especially for this kind of guide. Don't tell people what to do, show them (even if you want them to build their own taste, people need references). Plus, image-less guides tend to be walls of text. My guide (as seen in my signature) would not only be a good reference, but also something for people to do with their random collection of houses.

I really love this thread! I really like trying to build small villages. How many houses should a village have and how varied should they be? *first post for me, evah!*

Really, it depends on what time your building for. Villages today are rather large, while villages back during Medieval times were tiny (trader, mill, farm and that's it).
But if you asked me to build a small town however I wanted, I'd probably go for about 5-6 buildings (2-3 houses, a warehouse (storage), town hall/equivalent, and a building of importance (store, blacksmith, market square...etc), add a nearby mine and maybe a train station (although train stations could turn it into a city, AKA a cultural hub).
As for house variants I usually build tiny, basic houses for anything smaller than a city. An 8x8 1-story cube holds the basics (just don't line 5 of them side-by side, it does no good for your cities looks).

What do you think of the use of obsidian as a base material?

Depends on what you are building. If your looking for a massive opposing structure, obsidian could work although nether brick would work better. Because the default texture for obsidian isn't that great, I will leave simply say functionality or beauty.

Directed at the October Vale, I would say the city is both Haphazard and a [non-traditional] Tiered layout, really because of how you used the terrain and everything. I must comment that it is quite beautiful with what you have uploaded.

Just as a note, I have not gotten much done with the update recently. This is going to be quick to change I assure you, so don't feel as if this has been completely forgotten/dropped.

The track idea way at page 1 seems to be the most plausible idea. Might go try that.
Also, someone will have to make an unbreakable nether portal so that one cannot create a portal in the nether to get in.

My signature. Building cities is not only a brilliant time waster, but it pretty much encompasses building something big in Minecraft. And SSP doesn't have griefers (well, other than creepers). And Hardcore mode is quite entertaining.

A very interesting thread, with some great idea's & pointers. It'll surely help with expanding my town.
    I've used a multi-level layout sort off. It's divided in 3 layers:
    - Bottom part contains the port, market & warehouses (and some extra buildings, it isn't set in stone)
-Mid-level part contains most buildings, homes, farms, services, mines etc.
-elevated part: contains mainly military stuff like towers & fortifications (and a keep in the future)

I was able to use this layout as the original land had flat plateaus between mountainranges, allowing me to build the city on the plateau, the port below & the fortifications above.

Here's a pic of the city (still in progress):
It's not in the resolution the Op requested as I already had this screenshot & pulled it from another thread I posted in.

That's pretty cool. I'd be awesome to see it finished. Do you plan on adding ships/boats in the water?

I was mining underground when an Enderman spawned. Half way through the following battle he teleported. I spent the next 5 minutes looking over my shoulder and checking every corner of the cave. I never found him, though.

More people need to see this, that building list is impressive. The buildings in your example cobblestone city still look very boxy and boring, though. It also doesn't really conform to any of your styles.
I'm sorry if this is sounding overly critical. I love a lot of your ideas, and i'm amazed this thread doesn't have more popularity.
    Well done, man.

About my city: It was part of the inspiration for this thread, and was under construction when I first created the thread. It predates most of the ideas which is why it doesn't show them, along with it being a test in many ways. I am thinking of remaking it (seeing as the world was my first world after biomes were added) and using the new city for the thread.
As for getting this thread noticed, the issue I'm seeing is that people aren't posting (though it is used quite a lot). Thus, the thread doesn't get as much views and can't really get popular. I can only hope that maybe the thread can make some news site when I finish the update (which, by the way, is still slowly being worked on).
