One of my friends seem to be getting some "missing texture" errors with "Carpenter's Blocks v3.3.8_dev_r8 - MC 1.7.10"

Though my friend could just be a noob.

No, you cannot get the mod to work in 1.6.1. But yes, you can download multiple versions of Forge and multiple versions of Minecraft and keep track of them in a handy program called "MultiMC"

    http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1000645-multimc-43-windows-linux-mac/

After downloading the program and letting it auto-update, click "New Instance" and you will be able to select a version of Minecraft to install. Pick the version you want, click okay, and run the game to load up all the proper JAR files and such. Then, right click on the instance you just created, go down to "Edit Mods" and on the first tab that pops up, you will see "MCForge"

Simply click that button and pick the latest version of Forge for the version of Minecraft you selected. It will download the files and apply them to the JAR for you automatically. Run the instance again to finalize the installation of Forge and you can drop in your mods :)

There is a "vanilla" way to keep the different Forges sorted without downloading a fan made software. Just create a new profile in the launcher set to Forge and change the directory to something like .minecraftX.X.X
Each fresh Forge directory folder is about 415KB

Maybe shift+right click with glass pane to make a carpenter's block glassy?

And shift+right click with hammer to change direction of collapsible block please. Would be awesome to be able to make a lava ceiling with just a less than a pixel thin glass holding the lava, or a tube lava lamp.
