I think a shark like mob would be better in this case. While having sharks be in minecraft as a actual mob, Mojang did say no to that. Having something that behaves like a shark and vaguely looks like one would be better. Take the Guardian mob for example.

The Guardian looks like a big giant demonic puffer-fish that is always puffed up. Having something that looks sort of like a shark, but is not is a much better idea!

    That's an AMAZING idea!!! THANKS!!

I love the sharkskin idea, as well as the sharktooth arrows. However, sharks usually stick in small groups, and ones who do not are called rouges, and are more vicious. So Kupa's idea for shark health could be used for normal sharks, while ScotMisers' idea could be used for rouges.

A big majority of the game is slaying mobs, passive or aggressive, and we don't see people going around killing real life animals because they did it in a video game.

They dont want to add sharks because they fear players will have a bad image of sharks and kill them and yall suggesting crafting recipes for their drops after killing them.

yes, but dose not every mob in the game basically drop something after you kill it that is used to help you advance yourself or survive.

In that case, sharks would have to be solitary (no idea if they're that way in real life) and somewhat rare, or else they might be a little too strong.

ya they would spawn alone and be kinda rare

I thought about how much the health should be and I think it should have more than the drowned which has 20 health. I tried thinking of mobs that have around the same size and power. Horses, polar bears, Llamas all have around 30 health and I believe the Shark model would be around that size, but I also believe the shark would be a bit more powerful than those three. The next mob that comes to mind that is more powerful than those three, health wise, would be a Enderman which has 40 health. So this leads me to believe that the shark would work well with around 35 to 40 health.

Shark skin could be used as sandpaper, as it historically was used that way.

Cool idea, but what would the sand paper do?

i forgot to mention the purpose of this thread.

My goal is to give the team at Mojang ideas of what the players would want in a shark mob if they ever decided to add it.

so please leave all your ideas for your ideal shark.

You, and a great many other people :D ... none of whom, unfortunately have decision making power @ MS/Mj :(

Because of the thee dimensional nature of the environment and the lack of a fence equivalent, I'm not a supporter of adding any free swimming water mob. [I think drowned (even sans tridents) may be more of a threat than planned.]

Assuming a fence equivalent was added (ie. one that did not require floor to surface placement):

Sharks are (as you mentioned) iconic and, as such, seem the 'go-to' choice for an ocean hostile mob.

    Drops

Rather than (yet another) meat as a drop, perhaps they could drop Sharkskin which could be used as an alternate means to repair Thorns armor.

[Relevant 'cartoon logic': shark skin is covered with placoid scales / dermal denticles giving it a rough sandpaper-like texture (against the grain) while Thorns acts as though the armor was covered with small thorns. By the doctrine of signatures the former should be able to affect the latter.]

Shark teeth are also fairly iconic and it would be a shame to pass them by.

There is RW precedent for sword type weapons, but adding something of this nature to MC would be controversial,at best.

While it would further decrease the already much maligned utility of flint, using shark teeth to craft arrows could provide both utility to the item and a reason to craft arrows [Shark tooth arrows would not be available from skeleton drops and would be expended even by infinity bows as are tipped arrows.]

As a first suggestion, perhaps an addition of 3 to arrow damage regardless of bow charge (capitated at 10 for a fully charged bow).

[Given that arrow damage is controlled by bow charge, a flat addition (rather than a percentage multiplier) seems more verisimilitudinous for a change to the arrow.

Capitating the maximum damage at the current point would make Shark tooth arrows useful primarily for situations where many quick shots were needed while only slightly raising the effectiveness of fully charged shots – which would do 10 damage regularly rather than only 20% of the time.]

    Shark and Dolphin Relationships

I think tamed wolf / zombie would be a better model both as it has greater utility when it works [Dolphins are set to be untamable AFAIK and could so not be reliably kept present, unlike cats.] and because it better mirrors typical RW actions with each generally ignoring each other.
Were a shark / player fight to break out, even the untamed [untamable] dolphins would ally with the player.

thanks for the input, really appreciate it.

i really like the idea to use shark teeth for arrows.
i also thought of shark skin but i couldn't think of a use for it, and i really like yours so thanks.
the wolf and zombie idea works really well to.

thanks these are all great ideas!!!

Was there ever a mob that Mojang ever added without telling the community about, or said they wouldn't add but did eventually? Personally I think they'll add sharks; maybe that whole thing about them never adding them is just them trying to screw with the community?

I didn't even know they had said no to sharks. I just looked it up and now I am kind of sad. I really hope they change there mind because sharks would make a great addition.

I realize I forgot to answer your question about health, to be honest I am not completely sure how much health it should have. If you have any recommendations for the amount health it should poses I would love to hear it.

The shark/dolphin relationship and the idea of an effect for increased damage underwater are all neat ideas. However, while you say the sharks would pose a threat (as opposed to Drowned mobs, and seemingly Guardians too), you didn't include too much details about how much exactly.

I assume that they'd attack by swimming up and biting you. How fast exactly would they be (compared to player swmiming, compared to a boat)? How much damage? How much health?

How I imagine it would be is that sharks would be faster than the swimming player, but not faster than a moving boat. I also think that if a shark catches a boat that the player was sitting in and not moving it should be able to destroy it.

I think the riptide enchantment should throw the player faster than the shark could swim. I believe that riptide would become a lot more useful here because it would help escape from the sharks In the ocean rather than just a fun mobility enchantment.

How the shark would attack would be by biting the player for 2 or 3 hearts of damage without armor.

It could also have full frontal charge attack that the player could dodge by moving out of the way. Once the shark chooses a set direction it is locked into it for that charge and cant change direction until charge is completed. This gives the player some time to get away or dodge attacks. If it catches you in a charge it could bite you and do maybe 5 hearts of damage without armor.
Another thought would be that if the charge hit, instead of doing 5 hearts of damage, it would allow the shark to grab hold of the player and do a smaller amount of damage at first but continue to do damage to the player while still in its grasp. the player could attempt to escape by hitting the shark in the nose or face to release the sharks grasp. If the player escapes, the hit to the shark's face could knock it prone or frozen for a moment to allow the player to escape before the shark attacks again.

These are a few more of my thoughts, Thanks for showing the interest!!

posted a message on Why I believe sharks would make a great addition to the new Aquatic update.

First I just want to state I am loving everything being added in the new Aquatic update, but I feel as if there has been a missed opportunity.

Why I believe sharks could be fun:

When most people think of what is the greatest threat in the ocean they think of sharks. I personally feel that as cool as the drowned are that they aren't that big of a threat for me while exploring the oceans. I would like to have a bit more of a challenge to face while trying to explore the oceans. Sharks could bring that challenge by being heavy hitters with a moderate amount of health to make the ocean bit more adventurous.

    Drops:

Sharks could drop something like shark meet and a rarer drop being a shark's tooth. I think it would be cool if the shark teeth could be used to make a potion that would increase attack damage, but only underwater. This is similar to the rabbits foot drop that is only a 10% chance to drop and can be used to make the jump potion. Also, we already know that dolphins are being introduced into the game.

    Shark and Dolphin Relationships:

In real life, sharks avoid dolphins so I was thinking that dolphins and sharks could share the same relationship that creepers and ocelots have. Straight from the Minecraft Wiki, "Creepers will quickly avoid ocelots and cats. However, this will not deter them from chasing a player, only keeping the creeper 16 blocks away." I believe sharks could do the same as the creepers do to avoid ocelots but avoid the dolphins instead.

These are just my thoughts, and I would love to hear everyone's else's opinions.

Thanks for taking the time to read this thread of thoughts and have a nice day.
