the hight is 256 so 256 to bedrock one big grinder...
Probably wouldn't have built it after the limit raised to 256, because he could just make a much smaller one in the sky; much quicker and much more effective. Mobs don't spawn farther than 128 blocks away, that's why. Also why he wouldn't make it more than 128 blocks tall, if he was aware of this.
Does anyone else find the bedrock layer annoying? I'd love a flat, or semi flat surface, but it seems like you always have weird configurations that are very hard to build around, or walk over. Anyone else feel this way?
Yes, I do. Well, did, when I built stuff down there.
Build a it in the air, around layer 235. If you get no spawns, That will explain how to fix it.
I made 4 platforms of 8x8 and water streams 2-wide between them leading to a hole--a drop and lava to kill them. Gets a good yield. More platforms, more spawns, probably.
Edit: Why I said to build it near the height limit, is because mobs only spawn within 128 blocks of you. Up there, if you make sure the ground below is around sea level, there's nowhere to spawn but your trap.
It's actually rather simple. I run a line of redstone between the lamps. Not directly under, then it splits left and right to go under the lamp and power it. So if you'd imagine, for every two "lines" of lamps from door to the opposite wall, there's a line of redstone between that just branches to under the lamps.
If you still would like a picture, I'll take the time to rip up the ground and supply one. XP
Get an efficiency 4 pick and obsidian isn't that hard to destroy. It'd still be time consuming replacing a 50x50 area. But still. Another option would be transporting the lava to the 50x50 area and converting it to obsidian after placing it.
Easier said than done, mate, in regards to the pick and obsidian. And I considered bringing lava over, but ultimately, I'm too lazy.
Seems a little dangerous. try making a sorce of flow to push them into an area, then maybe make a way to stream to certian extets in a better fighting envirement (Something like make them flow onto a single block, have a lever to let a sticky piston to move it, then have them drop a little (3 blocks including the piston moved one) and then have a way to let as many in as possible. Ten in that area have a way to get down and leg hit them, a little bit of tower structures around the map for when you want to use your bow)
The purpose isn't experience, but joy in the combat.
I used to go walking around on the surface at night just slaying monsters for fun. Then I decided I'd keep it in a controlled environment and allow it to be any time. So I mined out underground a mob arena.
It is 50x50 in size and looks a little something like this
The redstone torches are dim enough to make it easy to see, but not prevent mob spawns. Since the arena is 50x50, there is ALWAYS somewhere for mobs to spawn. If the lights are turned on, they emit level 15 light, and the arena will not allow any more spawns.
Has anyone else done anything similar and care to share?
P.S. Skeletons are sometimes dumb and shoot too high, hitting the hanging blocks.

No, it's official.
Also, nice advertisement.

I looked through quickly, and didn't see a link or image, so here's one: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/images/e/ee/Spider_Jockey.png

Holy necro-bump, Batman!
Is it possible that it was in spelunking? In that case, the cave probably cut through it. Either way, I'm sorry to hear that. =(
Still don't think I beat it.

I'd go look there.

Maybe you should study how people build things, study redstone, and practice and make great things. =)

You built an exp grinder big enough to cover space from bedrock to 128? Must be one hell of a grinder.
Too bad it's kinda undermined now by a sky trap.

Considered it, but I'm not gonna cheat to do it.
