I've returned! Sheol and Boxed In have both been converted to Anvil.

Also working on a new map, so stay tuned for that.

Released another MTA! Check the first post for more details!

(much better than borrowed time, I'll probably end up disowning BT.)

Do you pronounce it "Eck-thell?" :]

    You do.

Which reminds me, is there anyway to get a name change on these forums? Otherwise I'll need to rename the maps :|

The beginning of the map has a pretty big sequence break that I accidentally found.
I threw an ender pearl at a wall (aiming for a little ledge) and it glitched me through the wall. From there I teleported to some sandstone sticking through a wall. Punching through the sandstone put me in Venemous Veridian and quickly to crossroads 3.
I barely started the map and I already found a way to iron and wood/cobble for days. Also melons and a pig spawner (once I finish spreading the grass). XD

Yeah, because of a bad design decision made early the areas were really close to each other. It was too late in the process to remove them - but this sort of thing won't happen again in my future maps.

Haven't played the map, but by the pictures I can tell that your monument is flawed, as there is a sign block where the wool would go. :blink.gif:

I love to inconvenience the player in every way possible. When you're on a timer, it's that much worse!

When ever I click the Download link for MTA #1 I spawn in a flat world could you fix the download link please

Are you using it on SMP? If not, try it now.

I also finished my first CTM recently, I'd love for you guys to take a look at it. Link/pretty pictures are in my signature. I'm also trying out a nifty new concept called Monumental Time Attack - a timer keeps track of how long you're taking, and in some cases, *BOOM* if you're not fast enough. You can see the proof of concept for that in my thread, as well.

I just got done with a CTM (think Vechs), I'd love for you guys to do a video. Link's in my signature, hope you enjoy it if you play it!

(SMP spawning probably doesn't work correctly, but the first area is short anyway so it doesn't matter too much.)

Oh, yeah. I'm thinking Vinyl Fantasy.

There are actually quite a few awesome CTM maps out there besides Vechs', but the genre as a whole does not really get the attention it deserves. Most people that aren't Vechs don't get many downloads on their CTM maps that took tens or hundreds of hours to make, but some simple parkour maps get 10's of thousands of downloads.

    Anyhoo, I digress.

It makes me rather sad that I put a month into a half into my own (rather short) CTM, when I could have copied skyblock in 1/20th of the time. That takes even less time than a parkour map.

    Oh well.

Wow from the screenshots this looks like a very good CTM map. However you should consider adding more information to the thread. This is so people know what to expect. it always confuses me when someone posts, "I made this cool map click here to download it" without any additional information, even if they add pics.

Good point, I should've spent some more time on the thread. Added a bigger blurb, might write some more later.

Thanks! Some parts aren't as polished as I'd like, but I'd spent so long on it I just wanted to get it out. Good to know it still looks good.

    #1 - Sheol
    Pretty Pictures:

She-ol: In Judaism, the abode of the dead or departed spirits. Fittingly, this is where you went to die - until you tried to bust out, anyway.

    Length: Short-Medium
There's no strict map type here. You'll find plenty of variety, from Forested Caves to Grand Mausoleums. The amount of loot here is on the low end - pretty much each enchanted item is a one-of-a-kind, so don't lose them! There's also a strong focus on treasure out of the way, so exploring every nook and cranny of the map will be very rewarding. It also features a little riff on the usual monument theme. The map has a museum with named wool types - Orange is "Passion", for instance. Each Crossroad has an additional area, bringing the total up to 5 per crossroad. And, of course, it comes with all the good I-hate-you so lovingly practiced by CTM maps the world over.

Get it here, or here if you hate adfly.
Monumental Time Attack #1 - Borrowed Time
    Pretty Picture:

    Length: Mini
A proof of concept for monumental time attack. The areas are simple, but you need to hurry, because if not... well, *BOOM*. Future maps in the MTA line will probably not have such fatal consequences - the timer will be more detailed, and the challenge will be doing it quickly rather than just avoiding an explodey death. This isn't exactly an aesthetically amazing map, either, but that's not its purpose. Tell me if I should make more. Go for a the high score... or low time, as it were.

Not worth playing compared to Sheol and Boxed In, but if you want to see the original concept, get it here!

Monumental Time Attack #2 -Boxed In
    Pretty Pictures:

    Album here: http://imgur.com/a/kEMVW#0

An expansion on the basic concept from Borrowed Time, Boxed In doesn't require you to rush - but still gives the time-attacker in all of us a reasonably detailed timer. How fast can you complete the Splendid Stopwatch? Features a mountain, floating islands, and a tree that defies physics, chemistry, biology, etc.

    Get it here!

More forthcoming! I really enjoyed making these, I hope you'll enjoy playing them.

    Minecraft
or: how I learned to stop worrying and play the game.

I forget how I was first introduced to minecraft, back in its humble creative days, but that's around the time I started playing it. I wasn't as much of a geek as I am today, so I didn't join the minecraft irc channel. The game was fun though, building castles and whatnot. Played on many servers, got opped on a few, ran my own for a while. And life was good.

Then, survival test came out. The version that actually had monsters and stuff! Thing is, at that time, I wasn't really interested in buying it. I slowly drifted away from minecraft, but I still followed its developement on a regular basis.

Eventually I found screenshots of the InfDev version, and I fell in love immediately. I pretty much bought it based entirely on the terrain generator - it was all so amazing, and I was really interested to see how far it had come from what I'd seen in survival test videos and screenshot.

So, naturally I bought it. I then proceeded to waste untold hours in the game. There were just so many things to do and see - I eventually considered it among my top 5 games of all time (sorry minecraft, but LoM will always hold a special place in my heart.)

So imagine my surprise when it occurs to me the game is still updating. I had already placed this among my top 5 - and it's still getting better?! I'm misremebering my minecraft history a bit and I can't access the word of notch (tumblrrr!) so let's skip to what a lot of people remember most fondly about minecraft - the Seecret Friday updates. These added a whole bunch of new content to the game, and made it even better than it already ways. Many beloved gameplay features like the minecart came from Seecret Updates.

Then, the sales really started coming in. This was around the point when people began to care quite a bit about Notch. The Seecret updates had paved the way for people to want them on a regular basis - but Notch had presumably run out of steam for them. At the time, he was still a one-man show, and the website began showing its cracks. He missed update after update and eventually stopped altogether.

He still updated on a decent basis from what I remember, but this is around the time when the grumblings began. People began to begin questioning notch's work ethic and pretty much everything else. Things sort of merrily chugged along anyway, though.

Then notch's blog commenting got even worse. Must I explain this era of minecraft history?

Anyways, the halloween update rolled around and made quite a few people upset - and one thing I'll agree with them on - the nether needs to be fleshed out more. Of course, it was still an extremely big update and a monumental advancement with the introduction of biomes.

Fast forward to when Mojang was formed. The first Mojang update was 1.2, as I recall, and there has been about one update a month in 2011 (assuming the wolves update comes out this march.) This updates have been fairly stable... excluding the 1.3 first day fiasco. Many lives were lost as the denizens of the minecraftforums made their rage known. I believe the login servers have gone down several times this year too, which only fanned the fire.

It occurred to me, as I was reading another "Notch is a horrible person" style-post, the following:

"Minecraft is the game I bought. Who cares what game devs do as long as they bring an excellent product to the table? Does anyone care what Miyamoto does when he's not working? No. I even hate the obsession over movie stars here in america - why am I giving a **** about this, which is basically the same thing?"

I promptly closed firefox and pulled up the amazing game Mojang has delivered to us.

    Still doesn't dissapoint me.

TL;DR: Stop worrying about Notch and play the damn game. You'll have much more fun and get a lot more for your money.

I've been trying to think of a way to respond without just saying "You're right," but I can't. Amazing post.

I was considering just posting the TL;DR as its own topic, but I didn't think it would have the same impact.
