    As stated in the original post, the scarecrow only attracts mobs within their aggression range, not all mobs on the map (perhaps a more advanced version could do that?)

    The reason I thought this item up was because often in my games and in posts on this forum, people are trapped in situations where there is no way for them to escape a horde of monsters. Having this item in your inventory would allow you to quickly place one down and use the time you bought yourself to run away or gain a more advantageous position.

    Serving as a bait for traps is another use, but the reason above is the main purpose for it.

    Is there a survival map that will cause monsters to walk into an enclosed area (pit?) where they can be observed up close without the risk of them attacking you?

    posted a message on Monster Suggestion: Digger
    Description

    The digger is a non-hostile brown pig with a stone pyramid for a head.

    Behavior

    Diggers are constantly trying to find a way to the surface and slowly mine their way up (they mine upwards by creating 2x2x2 increments in front of their heads) to it by digging through stone, dirt, and ore. Once they reach the surface, they will wander around aimlessly like pigs.

    Mechanics

    Diggers will create tunnels behind them, and if they destroy any ore they will absorb it. When the digger is killed it will drop any coal/ore that it collected, effectively making them pinatas once they reach the surface.

    Spawning

    To make them harder to come across and more likely they will have ore to drop, diggers will spawn underground and far below the surface.

    Other

    Diggers will only dig through stone, dirt, ore, sand, and gravel. Any other material or liquid will cause the digger to change course.

    Thoughts?

    One frequent suggestion for making this work is a bed object. You'd respawn to whichever bed you last used.

    Not only is this a legitimate idea for moving spawn points, it is another decoration to make houses complete.

    Uh

    Pillow:
    :stone: :stone: :stone:
    :stone: :ironore: :stone:
    :stone: :stone: :stone:

    Stone = Cloth
    Iron Ore = Feather

    Bed:
    :wood: :stair: :wood:
    [iron] :stone: [iron]
    :wood: :stone: :wood:

    Wood = Stick
    Stair = Pillow
    Stone = Cloth
    Iron = Air

    Bed takes up 1wx3lx1h

    Destroying bed gives one pillow.

    This would be good for mob hunting when trying to get those resources (gunpowder), but I can see it being abused (maybe no spawn in "settlements"?) but otherwise a good solid idea.

    Well, eventually (unless they're specifically placed to be safe from mobs), the scarecrow would get killed since it constantly acts as bait and cannot be healed like the player.

    EDIT: Also since it's made of wood and wheat, no one would question an explosion/fire dealing enhanced damage.

    EDIT2: Updated main post to include damage differences.

    Description

    A scarecrow made of wheat and sticks, takes up 1wx1lx2h like the player/door.

    Purpose/Uses

    Despite the name, the purpose of this item would be to attract hostile mobs and act as a decoy rather than scare them away. The scarecrow's most obvious use is as an escape tool that would save you in otherwise inescapable situations.

    The other purpose of this item would be to act as bait to trap mobs.

    Mechanics

    If the player and a scarecrow are both in the range of a mob, the scarecrow would take priority over the player as a target and would cause the mob to attack the scarecrow instead.

    Durability

    The scarecrow would have 10 hearts (as much health as the player) and would break into 1 stick or 1 wheat.

    Fire would deal 2 hearts per second (2x the damage rate that the player experiences), lava would immediately destroy a scarecrow (leaving no resources), and Creeper/TNT explosions would instantly break a scarecrow (but into 3 sticks and 2 wheat, allowing the item to be recreated).

    Other

    The final benefit of this item is that it would be a second use of wheat, making farming more useful.

    Recipe

    [iron] [gold] [iron]
    :wood: [gold] :wood:
    [iron] :wood: [iron]

    Legend:
    Iron = Air
    Wood = Stick
    Gold = Wheat
