And there's nothing I can do. I bought this game and now I cannot play it. I emailed Notch but he probably won't be able to respond for a while, if it ever gets through his spam filter.
Question. What happens if you place a block where a disappeared redstone block is? Or can only moving fluids go there, and the moving fluid block vanishes when the redstone block reappears?
You wouldn't be able to place a block where the redstone block is supposed to be. The only way to regain that spot is to make it reappear and mine it out with a pickaxe.
As for fluid, it would probably just check for adjacent fluids and make sure it continues through it, but probably without it appearing where the redstone block is.
Also maybe it would become transparent but still noticeable when activated.
I do foresee a problem though. Making large doors or trap areas is no problem since the signal would just alter the block properties to non-solid and to use the air texture, however it might be a problem to allow water to flow through it. Maybe make it so if off, check for adjacent water and continue the flow ahead of it.
It would basically look like an Iron Block except it would be tinted red.
The purpose of this block, is that it would essentially disappear if it receives an ON signal, and reappear if it receives an OFF signal. When a redstone block receives an ON signal and disappears, it also transmits an ON signal to any connected redstone blocks.
Also these blocks would emit a small amount of light.
This item would have 2 obvious uses:
1: Floodgates!

Crafting recipe would be 8 redstone dusts surrounding a redstone torch.
good idea, I just realized how come arrows are the only craftable monster drop??
Monster drops are:
Arrows, which can be crafted or collected from Skeletons.
Feathers, which can be collected from chickens which are plentiful or Zombies.
Gunpowder, which cannot be crafted or collected from any mob other than a Creeper.
Leather, which is collected from cows which are plentiful and non-hostile.
Pork, which is collected from pigs which are plentiful and non-hostile.
Slime Balls, which although rare, do not serve any purpose yet.
String, which cannot be crafted or collected from any mob other than a Spider.
Wool, which can be collected from sheep which are also plentiful and non-hostile, and can also be crafted with 9 pieces of string, however this is a pretty bad idea unless the reverse option was available making wool a storage option.
So really the only 2 drops that are useful but hard to come by are string and gunpowder.

I like the idea of a large mob, especially one that can use the environment.

(diamond block = cage)
(stick = string)
(bacon = leather)
(diamond = egg)
So:
Cow
Chicken

No sense in having 2 items with only one purpose if there's room in the frame design for the wings.
Same cost, less steps, no need for another item.
