Sorry, but I won't be providing any more support or updates until my health improves, which may not happen anytime soon. I'll update the original post to reflect this.

@cindy44lo, I honestly don't remember. Thorin_Stonehelm made that system. For reference, you can look at the ones that already have numbers. Also, I don't know why some start with "S:" and others with "I:". I think they are all supposed to start with "I:".

@ClockworkAvatar, The first time you run Minecraft with BigTrees installed, it automatically generates the configuration files in a "config" folder. Look for a "config" folder within the folder for your instance of Minecraft.

@DanielFromNorway, I will not add vanilla modifications back, but I might try to make it possible to replace vanilla trees, which could give a similar effect. One of these days...

@cindy44lo, Yes, "S:"BEACH AND COLD Big Birch 0"=", for example, is the density of Big Birch trees in any biome that is marked as "BEACH" type and "COLD" type. (I don't know if there actually are any cold beach biomes, btw.) Since no number follows the equals sign, it default to 0.

There is certainly a need to look at this mod for performance optimisation.

I used this for 1.6.4 and my PC ran everything without any issues, but with the 1.7.10 version the chunks are struggling to update any time there is a tree within them and the strain being caused on world generation is causing a PC that runs at 60fps+ without shaders to drop to around 10-15fps most of the time while moving with frequent freezing if a forest or other tree heavy area needs to be freshly generated.

I did tweak the config files to reduce tree frequency to 1/3 of their normal values which didn't seem to reduce the number of bigtrees compared to vanilla trees. This mod really gives a nice fresh look to Minecraft but the current version is simply not optimized enough to justify the visual benefits.

There are a number of small issues that need to be looked into. Maybe one day... Anyway, thanks for reporting.

Changing the frequencies and percentages of the trees seem to have no effect, was this disabled?

You have to change those values in "biomegroups.cfg" or "individualbiomes.cfg" now. It is customized for each biome, or group of biomes.

I deleted all the files beginning with Tall, although there are these three corrupted files that crash Explorer whenever I try to interact with them.

That is the weirdest thing I have ever seen and I have no idea what to tell you. Sorry.

Do you have a new release planned anywhere in the somewhat near future for 1.7.10 mainly with the new config update i do remember you saying you were doing a complete rewrite or something a few months back and were like 50% done or so at the time

I don't know. I'm just not up to much because of health issues.

Karob, this is probably my favorite mod.

I'm working on a fresh install of the mods on my computer. I managed to get mostly happy with my biomes mods yesterday so I decided to move on to BigTrees last evening. I worked through all of the existing tree configs, fixing all the bugs (like that acacia one) and adding more BoP trees. I was pretty pleased with my results, but too many trees were spawning in places they shouldn't. I looked at the configs and did some reading of this thread to figure out how to handle this. I have thousands of lines in both my "tree populations for groups" and "tree populations for biomes".

The way the configs are set up makes maintenance overwhelming. I was wondering if you had been thinking about making any changes to how they were structured? Mostly I was thinking that the treeconfig files could have a place for Biome tags. Then if the biomes config files needed to be regenerated from scratch (or were missing entries) that the biome tags on the treeconfigs could be used to gen the defaults and they can be tweaked as normal from there.

Yes, something like that is definitely my plan.

I deleted the Tall trees in the config, but now I just get this instead of the spirals. Any help?

Did you delete the file "TallFir.cfg"? If not, try deleting it.

To the O.P: You should update the downloadable Configs with the fixed config file if you get a chance, If you want you can use this dropbox link to the updated config. :)

    EDIT:

Also, I really liked the way the vanilla trees were changed with this mod, and now they just feel so plain. Is there an older version that still works with 1.7.10 that still changes the vanilla trees?

I though I did update the config file download but I guess not. Hmm...

No, BigTrees hasn't changed vanilla trees ever since it became a proper Forge mod instead of a hack. Maybe that feature will return, but the implementation will be very different.

Can you fix the vanilla tree modifications, Karob?

I don't think that I will reinstate vanilla tree modifications. The old way was a dirty hack. I do plan to add the ability to remove the vanilla trees from any specific biome, and then you could possibly replace them with similar looking trees of your own.

I found your mod after loading up the new (for me) Mad Pack 2 and discovering that they removed the mods Biomes of Plenty which has the Sacred Oak model and Natura's which has the massive Redwood models.

First thing I do on any new world is sprinkle a handful of Sacred Oaks and Redwoods about and any modpack without them just feels hollow.

Your mod gets me 90% of the way there though. I just love the primordial/epic kind of fantasy landscapes these kind of trees can convey. I now consider your mod a must have as well.

But any chance of a Biome of Plenty like Sacred Oak or Natura's Redwood trees being included in your mod? Maybe the authors wouldn't mind a pair of trees being used by another mod with proper credit?

Anyway NOT a criticism, I just cant help but think about how perfect these two trees in particular (or something similar done by you) would be in a mod like this.

    Awesome job and thank you!

It may be possible at some point to customize the tree generation to add trees that look like those, and even use the same blocks if you also have the respective mods installed. That is the BigTrees I envisioned long ago, and that still is my goal. Psychological problems have made it hard to pursue that dream, though.

I've discovered a mils incompatibility. If a thaumcraft aura is contained in the area where a big tree grows, it is removed from the world.

Is there anyone who could code a compatibility for this?

Are you saying that a big tree growing /near/ the aura node causes the node to disappear? Is this only on chunk loading, or also when manually growing saplings?

Really cool mod! Short question, though. (I'm not that well with configs) Is there a setting that makes the big trees alltogether more rare? For my taste there's already too many of them :P

In the config folder, open the bigtrees folder. Open biomegroups.cfg. Near the bottom there is a list of biome-tree combinations. Making those numbers smaller should decrease the tree amounts.
