First, you should use a mod manager like Minecrafter. It's been released cross-platform, does all this for you and is super easy to use. Just visit their site linked in the topic and click 'Mac Tutorial'.

Second, assuming you really must open and re-compress your *.jar file, the reason you are getting the loading screen is because the way you compressed your folder, the file structure is not correct, and so the minecraft Launcher application cannot find any of its files.

Selecting the Folder and compressing it will not work. That is because doing so creates an extra folder in the root of the *.jar file.
Here is the folder structure after just zipping the folder:

    (screenshot via jaree)
As you can see there is a root folder in the archive called 'minecraft' which was the folder that was zipped.

Here is the original, un-modified file:

The files here are not in a folder.
(The difference in file count is due to invisible files the mac OS creates in a folder, that can be ignored))

Therefore what you need to do, when you want to re-zip it is:
    1. Open the folder.
    2. Do command+a to select all the files inside.
    3. Right click and choose 'compress ... items'.
    4. The resulting zip file will be called "Archive.zip" and will still be inside the folder.
    5. Move 'Archive.zip' out of the folder to where the original *.jar file was.
    6. Rename it properly.

    This should work.

The program is supposed to keep running while you play minecraft. As soon as you close the game, it will unfreeze. The text in that window should say "Waiting for you to finish playing...".

Ahhh, ok that does make sense.
However it never said "Waiting for you to finish playing..." so I guess that's a minor bug then.

This is exactly the kind of mod manager I was looking for! =D
This Topic should really be Stickied!

Truly excellent work. The only problem I seem to have is the mod launcher freezes up after starting up Minecraft, only showing the spinning beachball of death when mousing over it:

From what I can tell all the mods were applied (in this example I just followed the tutorial on your website, and you can see Frenden’s Minimalist background + stone texture), so the only inconvenience it provides is that I have to force quit the program. I'm just worried that something might break if it crashes like this before it's done patching.

I've always found the creeper design very unique and disturbing. If Minecraft had a mascot, it would be the creeper.
    +1 for keeping creeper

    I am completely for this.

As you included in your original post, I definitely think that these items should have drawbacks that encourage the player to seek out a workbench and use more items to make their larger, more durable counterparts. Having shorter mine times, and less durability on the hand-picks is a great example of this.

Awesome idea. Aquian should also allow you to make underwater torches.

It's a cool idea, however it could be confusing to the user. if I see a block that looks like it's half sand, half dirt, what will I get when I break it?

However it can look ok if you don't blend it too far.

I created some mockups of this in photoshop:

    not blended:

And fake 3d preview, not blended:
