I just noticed that the light smoothing is not complete:
The shading on water is currently not smoothed. Are you planning on adding this in the future, or is there a limitation preventing you from doing this? I couldn't find anything by searching this topic since the term 'water' is considered to be 'too common', so forgive me if this has been addressed before.

Jan 9, 2011Posted in: Mods DiscussionQuote from CobraA1 »This is IMO the best mod for Minecraft. I know I've said it before, but it's worth repeating :smile.gif:.
As I understand it, it works by sending rays into the environment and checking if a ray hits an object or not.
What does BetterLight do to check the brightness of this ray? Is it a simple on/off thing with the sky and the blocks, does it get the light value from the blocks, or something else? I did notice that it seems to work even inside where the sky is not visible, which is a bit unusual for most AO algorithms.
Heh, it's not nearly that complex.
The Ambient occlusion calculation you are assuming is necessary when you have unknown, complex shapes.
Since there are no complex 3d shapes, only predictables cubes the AO element of the mod simply darkens corners in a preset manner.
In short, wherever you have blocks creating a corner it darkens that corner with a set gradient. It doesn't actually calculate any real AO.
That combined with smoothing the light values calculated already by the engine creates the final look.
As far as I understand the majority of the calculations are still done by Notch's light code, which simply takes where light hits as a set value, and has it decay in a linear manner for every block that is not exposed to direct light, until zero.
There is no ray tracing of any kind going on here.
Nov 26, 2010Posted in: Alpha - Survival Multiplayer SupportQuote from badmuffin »Hello,
Last night my girlfriend and I spent 3+ hours building a farmstead on our private SMP server. We log in today after the "update" and it was reset to the original rudimentary crate frame we had built.
After our initial dissapointment we mined all the required materials and went back to the site to begin anew. Everything seemed fine until we attempted to break blocks around the site, which proved invulnerable; including the crates we placed.
Along with the numerous bugs posted on this thread, it seems everything we interracted with the night before won't break. Also, we had some materials in our inventory from after we were done the previous night that we did not possess before construction on the farm(such as books)---thus proving that the loss of everything we built was not simply a complete "wipe".
We tried multiple things to get the blocks unstuck---resetting internet connection, logging in and out, and restarting the server.
Anyone else have this issue?

This may or may not be the server-reverting problem, but a server will not save changes if it's window is just closed and not 'gracefully shut down' by using the 'stop' command in the console. I've lost a good bit of work before by accidentally just closing the window, which disregards all changes and keeps your world at the state it was last saved at.
However if you did use the stop command this may just be a bug. Be surety enable automatic saves anyways.
Conserning the not-being-able-to-remove-blocks problem, I had that a few times, and sadly don't know how to really fix it. It always seemed to go away after logging in and out and changing my difficulty setting, or restarting the server.
Best of luck, hopeful a future bug fix will help.
Nov 24, 2010Posted in: Alpha - Survival Multiplayer SupportQuote from Gnomocide »Does anyone know if the bug mentioned throughout this thread (viewtopic.php?f=1013&t=346489) has been fixed? The one where you crash if you modify the world (too fast)?
I'd love to be able to dig/build at normal speed without crashing constantly with the java socketExecption....
Thanks in advance for any answers!

Creepers didn't die in daylight before the update either, and I don't think they ever did. To quote the wiki "They do not catch fire when when in direct sunlight, unlike Zombies and Skeletons."

Yay, finally... Hey0 doesn't have internet so he can't update, he got $370 donations though :tongue.gif:
Unofficial updates are win. Beta 8 ftw.
Yeah, pretty much. But before that, the actual server software should be fixed xD
or at least semi-playable =P
Really Notch, 2 more days of development to difficulty de-syncing bugs just a little more and we could have kept playing on working servers before you force the clients to update.
Nov 24, 2010different client difficulty levels seem to have different bugs:Posted in: Alpha - Survival Multiplayer Support
(left is peaceful)(right is normal)
-cannot see monsters
-cannot see -some- minecarts
- cannot pick up items
- redstone devices don't work
Both players cannot see the other in this case.

IS THE ENTIRE THING FINISHED?
Sounds to me like he just made a single texture for one block that he's offering people to use if they ever want to make a larger starcraft mod.
Nov 13, 2010Posted in: Server Support and AdministrationQuote from Kane_Hart »My server saves only if I do stop command. It also saves if we crash BUT only if the chunk I guess shuts down. But so many chunks never shutdown some in days and it could end up causing days worth of rollbacks.
How do I get it to save every hour or less for all chunks active.
You need to instal the autosave plugin, a download link to it is in the top post for this topic.
1. Download it
2. Drag SaveReloadPlugin.jar into the plugins folder
3. Open server.properties, change it to say this:
4. if it's not there yet, add this line
that value means a save approximately every 30 minutes.
5. restart your server
Now it should be on by default, but just to make sure, log in as admin and type /listplugin it should say E next to it. if not type /enableplugin SaveReloadPlugin
