Good tips. I also like to use some marking material. If I am exploring an area for the first time, I normally just place a cobble block to show where I started from. If the cave is huge and I end up setting a temporary base, I often bring in some colored wool, or a piece of sand and cactus...something impossible to find without you placing it. I only do that when inventory space is not important...hence me mentioning the temporary base.
Another ok tip for marking is placing torches on the right hand wall as you are moving forward. If you have to backtrack, just keep the torches on your left and your heading home. Its easy to screw this up though if you come into a big cavern, or need to throw down torches quick to fight off monsters.
My exploring kit is similar to the Op's:
Iron sword
Iron pick
stone pick x4
shovelx2
64 torches
stack of logs
stack of dirt
bow if i have one
food
bucket of water
I will find coal before my torches run out, no need to bring extra and I'm getting tons of cobble anyway..no need to import.
Not really interested in SMP, but may try it at some point. Generally there are too many morons on public servers in most games, so it would definately be a private server with just people I know if I did.
I am currently happy doing what I want in single player.
Why do people use these? I make one and swing it 3 times to get enough cobble for a stone pick and make the rest of my tools from stone and throw away the wooden pick. Its so much faster for gathering.
I only ask because in most Lets Play vids, and the challenge videos I see people use the wooden pick for quite awhile.
I usually branch mine, but I don't get as OCD about it as some. I just dig down to the appropriate level, dig a square room for storage/smelting and then branch off that.
I do love exploring cave systems though, its more exciting and often just as profitable.
Too many variables really. If you base progress on a material, building, mob killed etc you would have to also factor in the difficulty setting which I am sure some people change at various points throught their world.
Creativity would also be a factor. Your deluxe, fancy mansion type house would take far more time and materials than my trailer park style "house" that took a stack of dirt and 3 minutes to build.
I am not sure if I would pay attention to a score or not. I do try different playstyles depending on my mood, so sometimes I might be interested in competing I guess.
When I saw my first video of Minecraft, I was like wtf is that crap? After watching 5 minutes of gameplay I was amazed and didn't even think of the graphics as substandard anymore. I bought the game that night. Yeah I added a texture pack so the sun isn't square anymore, but honestly the big square sun had a kind of charm to it.... plus it burned up the skellies and zombies trying to eat my face.
It isn't the most epic one I have seen, but it does have enough interesting terrain for me to continue building on it. I just started actually working on it last night. I was trying out some of the other seeds and messing with 404 challenge and things like that.
I will probably keep it for my "home world", and make some other saves for challenges and things like that. I do enjoy playing hardcore, so I will always have one world going where if I die, I delete. Those are always random seed generations since I do not want to know anything that could help me out in advance.
I know some people feel differently, but I love the ability to share game seeds.
It always generated a seed, you just couldn't manually access it without a mod until now.
I like it. It opens up so many new possibilities. Look at the 404 challenge. Great idea and it started the day it the patch was released.
I am having contests with my kid using the seed function. We choose a seed and set a goal and time limit. Most diamonds in 5 game days, coolest house in X game days etc.
It doesn't bother me that someone might be playing on the same world as I am. It is still a randomly generated world, it can just be easily shared now.
filling the seed box with the letter f gave me the following
x-111 z181
Okay this is amazing. I just went to this world and what he's showing in pictures isn't even half of it. This entire world is spectacular. This should be added to the poll no joke
Wow, seconded - just came over the ridge into the valley pictured, it's like in The Land Before Time! Yes, I am lame :tongue.gif:
Incredible. I must see this for myself. Damn you seed spawns!!! I spend more time hopping from world to world than actually playing the game. This one my become a permanent residence though, its amazing.
I am a pro at getting owned by creepers and skeletons so this will make me feel right at home. I won't be posting video as I am not buying a recording program just for this though.
I want to try just because its an EPIC fight for survival from the time you hit the gravel. I love the idea of trying to survive underground with no torches.
Typical argument about personal preference, yet again.
If beds fit into your playstyle, then congratulations!
I won't say that I will never use the bed function, but one of the first goals I have is to aquire a watch. I mine underground for material at night and come to the surface during the day to build. You need to gather material at some point, why waste daylight?

I did when I first started playing, but it only took me a day or two to realize how inefficient that was.
