Anyway, I think I'll write down the design and post it here, complete or not. Even if it won't make it into Vanilla, perhaps it will be useful to modders.
No, I mean actually contacting dinnerbone and talking to him about it.
My guess is they don't want to alienate players with low-end computers.
I'm pretty sure Dinnerbone already knows how RGB values work.
The real problem is to make it efficient.
I might know of a way to write a mod that extends the current system, instead of replacing it with something completely different. (And it doesn't use RGB, it uses CIE xyY.) I haven't actually sat down to design the whole thing yet so I can't say for sure. Now the nice thing about mods is that everybody can decide for themselves whether the FPS drop is worth having colored light. If you put it in Vanilla, a shitstorm ensues.
If you know of a way, why not tell dinnerbone bout it?
He even talked about multiple layers of semitransparancy, which you solved at one point right?
Think about it, if you can initaite contact with him and have a dialoge, you might just get a contact inside mojang, and help them make the game! You might even get hired
When Notch was developing Minecraft, back in alpha, he said that he would eventually add a lantern item/block and make torches burn out and need to be re-lit by a flint and steel, although he actually never did it.
That's cause everyone hated the idea.
Not even joking, he stated it himself

Notch announced on November 18th 2011, at the Mojang Panel at MineCon 2011, that lanterns would not be added to Minecraft because of a large negative community response
Kaapo: Comparing redstoners and builders is like comparing engineers and designers. They have to be balanced for the best result and the way you guys want it to go is definitely not balanced. When I say redstone I talk about the timing and logic used not the output(redstone lamp) or input(tripwires) anyone can place them.
Jellomob: Like I said, the redstone lamp didn't add much to redstone 1. and I doubt this will. Oh and this will be another thing people will want afterwards: colored redstone lamps.
But you all missed the point. The thing I want to say is that even though you say things like "But it's so easy to make" it will bring a lot of bugs with it. 2. Not interesting redstone bugs(No, they're not all interesting) but ugly 3. graphic and rendering bugs. then they have to be fixed and so on. I support you, but please wait until they have finished what they are doing(which is currently very nice) and added things to other areas of minecraft.
1. A light sensor that has the ability to react only to certain colors of light would add quite a bit. Light based combination locks, Puzzles that utilize the color blending mechanic.
It adds a lot of things if you're creative enough to use it.
2. Bugs are bugs, no matter how "interesting" they are, relying on bugs to make redstone contraptions is foolish, as those same bugs could be fixed at any time. I hate when people get angry at the mojang crew for removing a bug, when it's their fault for relying on the bug in the first place.
And it's even more foolish to hope that the team will accidentally create a useful bug for redstone contraptions.
3. It's just a simple color pallete change and some damage value changes. The chances of any "Ugly graphic and rendering bugs" occuring is miniscule.
And once you have that you're gonna want colored glass panes, then 1. colored sandstone, sandstone stairs, slabs, colored TNT and so on. It's colored wood all over again.
It's nice for builders and all that, but after the colored wood they have to focus more on other parts of minecraft, like the redstone and rpg aspects. 2. Redstoners never get any major updates apart from new bugs to exploit.(the redstone lamp doesn't count as it mostly helps with aesthetics(*cough* building *cough*) and not the mechanisms.) Most of the people that play minecraft will benefit from the rpg aspects so please don't start tweeting requests on building before they have finished the villagers properly.
PS: When I say building I mean timelapse class stuff.
1. these were outlined in the OP. It isn't that hard to add
2. There are many other things that could come out of this, not just aethetics. Namely light-based redstone devices.
Okay, I need a detailed, well-balanced, and thought out suggestion that people will love!
"it should lay eggs or something"
Nailed it.
If you give a creeper diamonds it goes into love mode and mates with all other creepers in the area in a firey explosion orgy causing a ton of creeper eggs to fly everywhere.
I completely support this, along with other updates to villages too. I also have some ideas: 1. Depending on villager type they are attracted to a certain building. Perhaps a sign or certain block on/in a house signifies building type (including all 'houses' connected to that one house) otherwise it is a default house. 2. Villagers can build more houses/roads. Not immediately but after a few in game days one house could be built, the next depending on type of building. 3. The most needed, balanced trading, which I'm sure most of you already have read about.
1. I've thought about this as well
Librarians would be atracted to houses with a bookcases in them.
blacksmiths would be atracted to houses with a crafting table/furnace
Butchers would be atracted to houses with furnaces
Stuff like that.
However there is the problem of houses that havce more than one of these blocks, and villager types would also likely crowd into houses that have thier respective blocks.
Like if there is only one house with a bookcase, and 10 librarians, they would all crowd into that one house.
2. No, this would be extemely annoying. The player would have a hard time adding on to the village themselves if this happened. I like to settle into a village and then expand on it, I don't want to have to destroy any villager made houses to make way for my own houses.
3. I've been thinking about improving the trading system since it was implemented.
One way is to add actual shops that have a variety of things that you can buy in addition to the trading that goes on with villagers, but the villagers would instead take different objects for the items they sell, and not any form of currency.
Like 5 raw chicken for 20 wheat or something like that. Old fashioned trading.
The shops would take currency in place of the villagers, and would have several items for sale at once, the inventory changing each day
The solution we made for the iron golem problem in the ADD mod is rather simple and probably should have been added in the first place, village guards.
They are much weaker than iron golems, but they give the villagers some defense when they aren't around.
^this is a work in progress model made by one of our users, Jakest123
There would likely be a cap on how many can exist in a village at once, say one for every 4-5 villagers.
They, like iron golems, would likely be a separate entity from the village, and would not be counted as a villager in the code.
Though I do think that the spawning conditions for iron golems should be changed as well
Cnsidering it burns for exactly 8 items, and furnaces can only hold up to one stack, it's the most effecient fuel, not wasting a single second on a stack of items.

Once pudel gets done updating the terrain and stuff, we could start looking for more modders.
We still haven't tiddied up the forum yet though, which we need to do for newcomers

As much as we would love to do that, I'm afraid we aren't going to add any past versions of minecraft as dimensions. Sorry
There's not really much of a point to it, just download an old .jar or downgrade your minecraft.

The one about storing RGB values and such.

Notch stated himself that he would never do this, and I'm pretty sure jeb has the same mindset.
