posted a message on Running server and game at the same time? [RAM Issue]
I have 2gb of ram in my desktop and even changing the -Xms and -Xmx flags on java down to around 768m max would bog my pc after a few hours of 4-5 people playing including myself.

I have a dual core 64bit cpu running linux i compiled from scratch for my machine that uses roughly 100mb of ram on its own.

windows is much more of a ram hog, I have no clue how you could run windows 7, a server and the game at the same time without it being unplayably slow.

if you've got a desktop buy some new ram, its pretty cheap and will fix you right up.

alternately find an older machine and run a stripped down linux on it, host the server on that and use your pc to play.
I had an old athlon xp with 1.25gb ram sitting around and use that. with about 50mb os overhead i've got around 1.1-1.2gb to play with for the minecraft server depending on if i have the ventrilo server running, apache, mysql, etc

posted a message on "Rip" map from server
I know exactly what you mean. I've been wondering the same thing.

for example, I play on a server that I do not host or have admin access to.
I have built a huge structure that I am very proud of.
The server admin says he's shutting down the server forever.
I want to keep my structure for offline use or to put on a local server for my friends to see what I made.

so the question is: is it possible to modify the client to capture and store the chunks in a usable format simply by connecting to the server and walking around?

sure! i have my private map and config in a separate dir so i even care if i break something.
do you have a list? your server post in your sig has quite a few, any that are particularly good?

EDIT: Sorry, forgot I still had whitelist enabled! should be fixed now

My server I run for a few close friends including myself, most we have online is 3 usually, however I would like to know how my hardware could keep up with more going on, and i'd like to see what creations might be made given free roam to whoever wants.

I'll gladly send the map to anyone if they want to keep any creations as I will take the server back to whitelist for local use only.

right now whitelist is disabled, I will save the world that is created as I may put it online permanently after we move out of our apartment into a house where I can set up a permanent server rather than using my desktop pc :smile.gif:

    Specs:
    Athlon 64 X2 5000+
    2gb ddr2 800
    Gentoo linux
Roadrunner 10mbps connection (my upload is severely choked i think though:( )
Hey0 mod b131 with craftbook and backup plugin, other mods can be added at request.

you should be connect to the server using jarodtlg.no-ip.org

I may decide to run parellel servers to keep this online on a different port, we shall see what transpires.
I hope some people get online and have some fun on here.

If there are any issues you can pm me and let me know whats up.

    Thanks!
