Also, as mentioned above, use bone meal on a regular to make a giant.

On the new generated chuncks it will.
Note that there will be a huge wall or drop from 1.7 to 1.8 chuncks like Alpha 1.2.6 introducing biomes.

It looks like there is a lighting bug with multiple things. (Mobs, blocks, chests, and as you mentioned, paintings).
Pretty sure that Mojang will release 1.8.1 soon fixing a lot of glitches, including the item duplication bug.
