Actually it wouldn't even take that much to get out of an admincrete box. You can just edit the login packet the server sends to you to change your admin level to 100; Then you can break admin blocks and the official server will do nothing but shrug it off.

Otherwise, yeah, the client and server can let people teleport anywhere they want in the map and there is nothing you can do about it. Server can't even tell the difference between a teleport and normal movement.

Okay then, if it's all about money, I will openly offer the entire script to anyone who asks for it, with a small licensing fee and no warranties of any future support. Anyone obtaining a copy from me can make whatever game changes and custom block types they want and run whatever servers they want, and it will all be moot when Notch makes an update in a week that breaks it all and would need to be updated and fixed by me but I won't be around to fix it because I'll be banned for simply being too awesome and generally a very good fellow for you to handle.

    How's that sound?

Besides, there is currently no way for the server to tell the difference between premium users and standard users in the first place, aside from one unused byte in the login packet which is currently always (to my knowledge) set to 0. Even citricsquid can't tell the difference outside of having custom skins; That said, custom skins is still the only concrete benefit (i.e. not a promise) of purchasing at the moment and I have done NOTHING to undermine that.

I haven't released my server script yet partially because it is still broken and constantly needs to be watched, can't have a decent uptime, and I'm still not comfortable with having to make it open-source. A big part of the reason why I want to reprogram it in C will be to allow me to keep the source myself, in addition to gaining efficiency and possibly even applying a Lua API of my own (perhaps direct support for Notch's API when we know more about it).

I'll also change the /nick and /onick commands to just adding colors to names for different admin levels, and keep everything that Notch decides to limit free users with. I have no ill intentions and find it quite disturbing that you are still constantly and consistently speaking of how eager you are to banish me and anyone else who does anything like me despite how openly you add ideas to my pool of things to do here, especially how specifically (and quite firmly) Zuriki is encouraging me to make a "zombie infection" mode which is quite clearly a less-detailed ripoff of what Notch is planning to do.

If it comes to that, and I'm afraid it might, I actually have also been working on my own client all along. In control of the client, the server, and vastly updating the protocol, it will be my own game, I just thought the people here might be interested.

I believe I was very misunderstood with what I said on IRC that day, and it hurts. I don't mean to "steal customers", not at all. I'm only using this forum (which was not made by Notch yet still gets to be considered official; Why can't my server be considered 'official' too, then?) to find the audience who might be interested as I have been inspired to create similar things, all from scratch.

In any case, being constantly and completely outright attacked like this is why I often prefer not to say anything in the first place. >_>

Oh well, MP won't be free once the game is released fully.

This means my server is valid and no worries about JTE giving complete replicas of Notch's game modes to free users should even conceivably be made, yes?

Coding is all I can do, all I know how to do, and I'm stuck in the position of doing this because I can't do the other parts myself. I have no skill or ability of my own in the fields of community interest, ideas and arts... or I might not be here in the first place.

The fact that I end up nothing more than a programming leech quite depresses me sometimes. And yet it moves...

Notch gets pissed off at me sometimes for undermining all my work. ... his work. yes.

I really want to put up a download for the server scripts here or something, if only for the sake of letting others see my beautiful code and make use of all the anti-hacks I've added in and such, but it's still not stable, it's not ready, I have so many more features to code, and then the source would be available to everyone and they'd all start making their own mods of it and such...

Infection could be a doable game mode. For skin change, I'd just have to make everyone named "Zombie" in red and it will be clear. Zombies aren't allowed to chat, either.

I can already configure what levels have what commands and so on, I actually have four different user levels aside from normal (JTE is 200, ops are 100, helpers are 50, normal is 0, and muted is -10) I just haven't bothered to make / commands for changing them yet ... Ultimately I should hope that the server never needs to go down and I can just do EVERYTHING in-game, but that's easier said than done. The server requires a lot of maintenance to keep up so far.

I have been hosting my server publicly for the past few days, with my name in the title so you know it's mine, but it's been very distracting having to staff it myself because apparently everyone else is too stupid to be able to deal with griefers and reloading the map on their own... I should probably add a list of maps you can revert back to since the minute-ly saves are often not far enough back, but I'm starting to get lazy on all this and want to do more exciting things.

So if you want, come and see. It's up right now, even.

I've been told a few times before I should make other kinds of unbreakable blocks, but I am at a loss for how I can make them look different from normal blocks or otherwise differentiate them. At least the admins should be able to tell, even if it's invisible to the normal users...

    Two things I learned:
    1) If you give ops the ability to build water and lava blocks anywhere they want, they WILL flood the map at least twice and keep it in stupid places otherwise.
    2) The ability to /load the last saved map, usually without losing anybody, is invaluable.

Hehe, connect 4 would work wonderfully too. Any board game or strategy game could work, actually... Probably even games in which everyone sees a different 'board', ex. due to "fog of war", since I have control over all network transmissions... Just build me a board and tell me how the pieces move, I guess.

Thank you Zuriki. :biggrin.gif: I might not have gotten as far without the help and encouragement of at least two of my friends, though. When I got here, my work was already cut out for me; All that I needed to do was a whole lot of experimentation and roughly 2300 lines of code. (and counting). Things are looking up. :smile.gif:

And yay, a random screenshot of me in the middle of saying something or other to a colorful pyramid with a sponge base. Awesome.

The client processes the physics of the player, i.e. water makes you wet and swimmy. The server processes the map blocks, i.e. grass decides to spread to the dirt block next to it.

The server communicates with the Java applet through the internet.

    Stunning concept, I know.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, though I've been asked that before. ... It basically listens for people trying to connect to it, then sends them information about what's on its mind, like any other server? :tongue.gif: It listens to every message that every player sends and decides what to tell the other players based on that. Took a lot of research to decipher just what the client and server are trying to say in the first place, though.

It's a server, just like Notch's official server software. You just run my script instead, and it loads up and gives you a URL to give other people to connect to it.
