Summary: Optimized file size, minor additions, version compatibility, remade the title background, and made a lot of minor tweaks and improvements. For those who use graphics mods, custom night skies and some shader textures have been added.
Good to see that this project is up and running. To everyone else: This is only the beginning! There are many planned features and ideas that aren't yet implemented. It's still fairly playable, though.
I'm back with another update. This is one of the most significant yet, and there are many changes/additions. The most important changes: Ported pack to newest Minecraft version, remade stone and ores, added some entities, added beds, and remade the torch.
Update: 0.16.0 has been released. This update adds all minecarts and rails, elytra, hopper, TNT, farmland, polar bear, rain, and sun textures. The attack indicator for Minecraft 1.11.2 has also been added.
Update: After an enormous hiatus of over a year, I've returned (if only briefly) to provide a new update to Polychromata. This update contains about 130 changes, ranging from minor improvements to high-quality content additions.

I think a challenge should be to some-how make the highest resolution texture without lag: e.g. 256x256 ;but with as little lag as possible instead of using optifine or any other mods...
I'm not even sure what you're suggesting. If you're suggesting an optimized texture to cause as little framerate loss as possible, it would have to be very flat (i.e. no fine detail) and have a very small palette. Think Sphax, but heavily aliased and saved in an 8-bit (or lower) format.
But that doesn't really make a difference, since even the pixels for a flat black square are all still loaded and consume video RAM. The only significant difference is that the files would use a little less space in hard drive memory.
The only way to improve the framerate is to use textures with less resolution than default (i.e. 8x8, 4x4, 2x2, 1x1). Anything above 16x is going to use more memory, no matter what.

Two updates in one year? Yep.
This one adds new water and lava, ingots, improved netherrack, and netherite tools.
(Don't worry, it loops in-game)

0.20.0 update: About 70 new textures added; mostly entities. Added fish, shield + patterns, donkey, mule, horses + patterns, and gravel.
0.20.1 update: Modified water textures to use a constant alpha value, since translucency doesn't interpolate properly due to a bug.

Update: 0.18.0 released. Ported to 1.13.2, all GUI textures done, and various improvements.
