You could always try my first attempt at making a map ever... by daylight known as Threat of the MathMagician :) I'd love to see it played :)

Obligatory Backstory: My eldest has trouble with maths and focussing thereon, but no trouble working with Minecraft - which uses maths. Therefore, I concocted this abomination adventure map to underline the importance of maths within the restrictions of his class lesson plans.

Then I got the brilliant idea of making it a sharing experience. Thus, Threat of the MathMagician[the actual name of this map] did arise.

It's made for two players, but plans are in the extra material on how to use the map in bigger classes. The included texturepack is not intended for players, but for teachers or supervisors so they can watch their students' shenanigans from the outside.

UPDATE: I've now fixed the Supervisor's texture pack so that it's 1.3-friendly.
UPDATE2: I've also made sure the link below points to the updated file.

    Download from here!

And just in case you don't know what to do with a map [I'm certain you don't really need these instructions, but I prefer to err on the side of caution...]

    Windows

    1) Download the Map from mediafire.com (Link above)
    2) Put the .zip file on your desktop (or somewhere where you can easily find it again.)
    3) Press Start, and type in %appdata%. Click into Roaming. *XP - Press Start, Run, then %appdata%. Click into Roaming.
    4) Go into .minecraft/saves.
    5) Unzip the zipfile Folder (already done) and place the map folder into the saves folder.
    6) Play and Enjoy!

    Mac

    1) Download the map from mediafire.com (Link above)
    2) Put the .zip file on your desktop (or somewhere where you can easily find it again.)
    3) Go into: Finder/Application Support/minecraft/saves.
    4) Unzip the zipfile Folder (already done) and place the map folder into the saves folder.
    5) Play and Enjoy!

    Multiplayer

    1) Download the map from mediafire.com (Link above)
    2) Put the .zip file on your desktop (or somewhere where you can easily find it again.)
    3) Go into your minecraft server directory.
    4) Rename the current world folder with something relevant to that map. e.g "MathMagician"
    5) Paste the map folder into the minecraft server directory.
    6) Rename the folder to world.
    7) Run the Server and Play!

I still need to know how to change modes of a map and all the step-by-step stuff on how to share a map when I'm done.

Plenty of time, though. I just finished the mandatory sewer level.

MCEdit is too confusing for me. I tried it once and had massive amounts of fail. I may attempt to use it again on the spawner-fixing, though...

Today's misadventure was trying to install mods! I found some helpful instructions that seemed idiot proof enough... and every single time I tried to install TMI or ModLoader, I managed to crash the game :(

Fortunately, I have Inside Job, which will allow me to cheat spawners into my inventory :D Alas, I can't find the thing in MCEdit that allows me to twiddle with spawners...

Thanks for the instructions, Forexal. I have a few problems with them, though...

    Quote from Forexal

    Download TMI zip file
    Open it
Right click Minecraft.jar, then open with WinRar

I don't have WinRar, because I don't have a Windoze PC. I specifically stated that I'm running a Mac [see above posts for OS X version] What I *do* have is Mac's Archive Utility 10.7.1 and all that does is create minecraft.jar.cpgz which I can't open :(

    ...
Use survival mode to test and activate redstone (redstone doesn't activate if built in creative)

Um. Yes it does. I have made functioning redstone devices in creative, tested them in creative, and debugged them in creative.

@Bluebomber54: The only MCPatcher I can find is a texture pack installer. URL please?

    Thanks everyone who replied!

I can see Too Many Items is the recommended mod for this, but I have a few problems:

    1) I can't install it. Seriously. The mumbled video tutorial I was able to find said to use the archive tool and all that did was make a zip file of minecraft.jar @[email protected]
    2) Spawn eggs in dispensers take up WAY too much room in already confined areas. It'd be fine for larger rooms, but some of the spaces I have in mind are 2 wide by 2 long. I'd really like to know how to hack spawners.
    3) Block 97 is not a solution, as Adventure Map rules kinda depend on players not breaking blocks, and once in there, silverfish don't come out.
    4) I have no idea how to make a server, nor do I possess the resources to do so. All I have is one old, shitty Mac.
    5) Did none of you pay attention to the "explain it to your grandmother" bit? I'm an idiot! I have no clue! I stuff up things with alarming regularity...

@Eminent14: I am already rebuilding this map since the Taller Worlds update. I have no inclination towards doing so AGAIN just so I can use Single Player Commands. Do you know if it works in Creative?

I'm making an adventure map in creative mode [Since I'm a complete noob at this and don't understand the many map modder programs out there] and I need to know a few things.

But first: I'm running this all on a 2nd-hand mac laptop [OS X 10.7.3] which tends to wheeze a bit when there's a lot of mobs around or the fog isn't set to "tiny". In order to function while making this map, I've had to turn the fog distance all the way down, and turn off just about every fancy feature there is.

That established, I want all Expert-to-Noobish translations for clear instructions on:

    1) What programs I'll need to change my map to a "Survival" map when I'm done. Or, failing that, how to do so myself. Assume I have none of the programs that don't come standard with a Mac.
    2) What programs I need to (a) put mob spawners in my inventory and (b ) how to make sure said spawners spawn the right creatures [Some of the creatures I want in my map are: Squids, Silverfish, etc.] and how to install/use them properly. Or step-by-step instructions for same.

I am almost completely incompetent when it comes to this stuff, so when passing on useful information, it's safe to pretend you're giving instructions to your grandmother.

Pictures are helpful. Walls of text are moderately helpful. Mumbly videos aren't. In fact, I kinda despise the instructional videos because I have to constantly pause, scroll back, replay, reload, and other pains in my anatomy. Plus the audio is not always that hot. Or there at all.

    Thanks in advance, everyone!
