So, me and Chip just did a bet concerning the jam, for better or for worst.
We both make our maps, and then afterwards we have people play both of them and give us a rating from one to ten. Whoever gets the highest average wins, and gets to choose what the loser will change his Skype or Twitter icon to for a week. So far Gerald and Render are gonna judge, but if you also want to judge feel free to do so. Only criteria for judging is that you have to have played both maps and give a rating for both.
Chip is on wave 2, I'm on wave 3, which is the only main difference here really.
May the best mapper win, and get ready to get rekt m8.
*a wild Infinity appears*
Heyo, wassup everybody. I heard there was gonna be a jam, so I hath returned (for now that is ). I've been practicing a bit with Worldpainter to sharpen up my skills a bit. Funny thing about sky islands, is that Worldpainter can create the best sky islands ever Look at this magnificence
WORLDPAINTER MASTER RACE
Okay so now seriously, which of those two color palettes do you think is better (the ones which show the top of the island)? I'll probably be using one of them for my first island during the jam.
As for all you peeps asking "Is ____ okay?", basically as long as it's a CTM, has sky islands, and doesn't break any of the other jam rules, it should be fine. For example, the backwards CTM thing is okay because it's still very much a CTM (you complete a monument). The whole point of the jam is creativity among other things, so asking stuff might be not the best idea. I recommend you ask only if it's something very unclear or which might break the rules, like "What sort of schematics can I use?" and stuff like that.
Because in reality, if you're making it for yourself to have fun and get the experience of being in the community as your main goal, and not so you get uber popular and have a ton of people play your maps, getting a lot of people to play and like your map and whatnot doesn't matter all that much.
Yup, still alive. Mostly been up to robotics and other boring IRL stuff (but I did go to freedom land for an international competition, which was ncie ). I saw you had a jam, and if the next is during summer vacation I might just be able to participate (depends on when it is during the vacation).
Are you back or you're just disappearing again into the void of mapmakers with not enough time?
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the latter. As I said in my retirement post, I'll be somewhere between Drago and Skeeto in terms of my activeness here. Today just happened to fit, so I made a special appearance. I'll see if I can stick around for another page or two before vanishing into the dust once again.
As for the yellow area, I agree with Witty. It's kinda painful for the eyes because of how glowy-wowwy it is and the extreme randomness of the block variation. I recommend you drastically decrease the glowstone, get rid of the obsidian and stone bricks, and add some end stone for the random block variation and use a small web brush on the walls. You can try using a vine filter or something like that if you want to have hanging webs, as those could sometimes work nicely. It's a very delicate and generally fairly subtle block variation, but in my experience it works pretty nicely.
Some of you may remember what I said all those months ago. Some of you weren't even here. Anyway, let me recap what basically happened:
I started to get time constraints. Not your "Oh I won't be able to work for a week" time constraints, the "I don't have time to breathe" time constraints. Because of this, several months ago I declared that if things didn't get better for me until the 22nd of February (which would be the 1 year anniversary of me finishing my map in its most basic form), I would quite mapmaking and become a retired mapmaker ("retired" as in my activity levels will probably be somewhere between Drago and Skeeto).
Spoiler alert: things didn't get better.
So here I am, retiring as I said. All things have a start and an end, unless they're infinite, and it seems I chose the wrong name
This has been an absolutely amazing community, and I'm sad to need to say goodbye. I've had a lot of good times here, whether it was during the Nickname-pocalypse, talking about the never ending battle between gameplay vs aesthetics, or simply asking China to rent me their wall for a bit so I could express my unpopular opinion. It amazes me to think that so much has happened and influenced my life simply from a thread on a forum.
You've all been amazing people on way or another (*sigh*....I guess you too Hybran), and I hate needing to say this goodbye. Sadly, things happen and change, and so must I. I will always remember all you wonderful people, as you won't be easy to forget. As this are some of my final words as a mapmaker, I guess this should also be my will.
If you want to use things from my map or any mini maps which I may have made along the way, please PM me or Skype me your request. I cannot promise that I'll simply straight up give my map to any of you, because while you all are great people, some are greater than others As for my area in the community map, I want Chiptimus Prime, Tikabro, and Rajerk to be in charge of it. You three know what I expect at least a few chests to be called.
Well, back to the goodbye stuff now that's out of the way. I would say goodbye to each of you individually, but that would take far too long, as I don't have time. I tried during the last few days to say my farewell to a few of you in private, but I didn't have time for every one. I'll see if I have time later during this week by any chance, as there are still some of you whom I'd like to do a more private goodbye to.
Well....everything that can be said has basically already been said. I told already of certain other things such as how I got here and whatnot during other memorable times of this thread or my forum life, so I think this is the end.
RIP
Infinity8miner, also known as 8-ball by those who partook in the Nickname-pocalypse. Retired mapmaker.
Hmm.....well, I haven't seen this discussion around here for a pretty long time.
I have talked about this during the past, and have had my opinion vary several times, but for now I think I'm gonna just state what seem to be the facts:
When it concerns aesthetics in CTM's, it seems to come down to 2 main sort of people:
1. The Fangrides, who want to and will play a map only if the aesthetics are above a certain threshold to keep them interested and give them eye candy.
2. The people who want aesthetics to create atmosphere and generally care very little about their quality or don't care about them at all.
Now, first off, I'm with the second group here. IMHO, the people in the first group are more vocal than the second group because they care more, thus making them seem to be more than they actually are. Now, again, I am not saying a CTM doesn't need to have good aesthetics. I'm not saying it needs to necessarily have fitting aesthetics either. Unless you're making these to get "fans" or whatnot, you're probably making a CTM for the experience, so you should probably just do it however you like doing it. Certain people will play it, certain people won't. There is nothing making you be obliged to make a Ragecraft or a SI. There are people like Tikaro and Ragirk and Fangride who find the making aesthetics part really fun, whereas there are people like me who somewhat dislike it.
Now, as for gameplay in screenshots: some of you may remember that a pretty long time ago I posted something about a gameplay mechanic which I deemed the "killstreak" (really happy that name seems to have caught on ). I used a fair bit of pictures with a fair bit of text to show off what generally seemed to be a pretty fun and promising mechanic. Now around that time, Goomoose/Xhen also posted a few pictures of mobs he had in his map and said what they do. We both got feedback concerning our mechanics, and it was nice. What I'm trying to say here is that gameplay is far from impossible to show on the thread, it's just harder than posting a picture or two and asking for feedback.
Main problem with a bigger height limit that I see is that it'll probably be pretty resource intensive and the player anyway won't be able to see anything at once. Still, if they manage to make something like a 512 blocks height limit that isn't super intensive that would be a Worldpainters dreams. The mountains....the epic possible mountains....
Nice going! I would like you to talk a bit more about the gameplay for one thing, and congrats on not getting peer pressured into using block.var and doing what you want and feel that is right.

Do you think it's necessary to use command blocks these days to create a good custom map? (teleporters don't count)
Please explain why.

Community Question:
As a player, what is your favorite mechanic in linear branching and open world CTMs?
A mechanic could be for example, building, resource collection, combat, exploration, looting, etc.
