Taking in that you are exposing roughly 1/3 of where the diamonds could be, any diamonds found had a 1 in 3 chance of being found and the same odds apply to any subsequent finds.
You... just...blew your own theory out of the water. But that's what intelligent discourse is all about, to get us all thinking about what actually happens (and maybe firm up our understanding of probabilities)!

The level to be mined (12) stems back to sometime in the beta when F3 reported the y coord as eye level. 12 being 12.6 at eye, with feet at 11. A 1x2 shaft exposes layers 10-13 as you stated and is commonly considered to be mining at layer 12, with lava lakes being below your feet at 10.

As to the chance to find ore per chunk, colorfusion states the problem correctly. Although it is admittedly easy to assume that once an event with a percentage chance to occur has happened, it is less likely to happen in the near future. Would you really bet the bank that given only two flips of a coin, that upon seeing heads, the next flip will inevitably be tails because the 50/50 event has already occurred? I see diamond ore has a roughly .0846% chance of forming in its preferred layers. So you really want to expose 1182 blocks as quickly as possible without undue redundancy.

An aside to branch mining, perhaps tunneling 4 rows apart, leaving 3 rows between tunnels. This has the chance of leaving vertically oriented pockets of ore undiscovered. Small pockets could be missed but by the time an ore deposit has reached any size it will have branched laterally, allowing discovery along one side or the other. Something to consider- it feels like it works faster...and you certainly cover more territory. Also if you have zones devoid of lava lakes at 10, it would make sense to drop a few tunnels to layer 7 (eye) and take a peek at layers 5-8. Especially if you ally with the OP's stochastic theory, haven't found any diamonds in the chunk above, and really needs those 3.097 diamonds that certainly must lie within this chunk ; )

for me it would definetly be no hunger bar

You know, you really can't miss something that wasn't there. That's a lot like saying 'I miss rocketships and rainbow defecating pegasi', because, well they weren't there. Even physicists working in more than 3 dimensions aren't allowed to make such statements according to the order of first assumptions.

For me, minecart boosters as already mentioned. I have one in my museum, sitting sadly idle. Such fun, the days of minecart science.
Oh, and definitely the way steves used to run around flapping their arms in merry amusement!

What I dislike the most is when they are wearing your armor and equiping your weapons, and you finally get the advantage and kill the hoard and they don't drop any of your stuff back to you...

Just for some perspective, the minecraft world makes its appearance at the planetary scale- look for it around Neptune.

posted a message on Why was it redstone?
Copper is merely a conductor, whereas redstone has added properties of power generation. The ore itself flouresces upon contact and can be manipulated into a power producing torch. I just wonder about the potential health ramifications to Steve, upon long term contact...

posted a message on Mob spawner mechanics, how many blocks of air above it?
Yes, only one layer of air above the spawner is not sufficient. It is a possible spawning area, but any mob 2 blocks high will not spawn as their heads will be in solid blocks. Make your roof 1 higher or you are limiting your spawns by 1/3.

I would guess that fully half of the server are/were potheads. We are just the type that grow our own kind, make our own music, do our own programming, travel the world and make a bunch of money.
