.....Anyone find diamonds? Mined for 4 hours, found diamonds.... Hissssssss.....BOOOM! *RAGE QUIT"

I wasn't having much luck either, until I stated a new mine in the Swamplands - I wanted to find Slimes.
    But in 20 minutes I've found 14 diamonds, 105 Redstone, 22 Iron, 36 Lapis and 109 Coal.
Getting right back to it, only popped out to share the co-ords.

I started branch mining with a corridor North from -713 12.62 1806 (and so the branches go East and West).

Many thanks Wildmouse - looks really compact :) I'm going to build it.

    P.S. I'm a newbie and didn't know about cauldrons - but I do now.

It seems that enlarging the space underneather the lava (3x3 with a hole for them to drop through in the middle) stops them from jumping.
Only problem is that if only a few chicks in there they all bunch up in the middle where there's no lava on top. Ah well, such is Minecraft :)

I've watched a few tutorials where eggs are dispensed onto a half slab (above hopper etc.) with lava above it so that when the chicken grows ...... zap - chicken & feathers.
I understand the principle and have tried various models on my 'test out ideas world'.

But the same problem keeps recurring - when the chick grows enough to touch the lava, it squawks and jumps up into the lava instead of just setting on fire and cooking. So it's vapourised and nothing goes through into the chest. I've tested the collection mechanism - stuff dropped on the slab ends up in the chest. The egg dispenser works - chicks spawn on the slab. Arrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh ..............

Any thoughts? Advice? Am I missing something?

If my browser would let me I'd post a screen shot so you could see what I've built.

I'm a newbie (got Minecraft just after Christmas). I've done a bit of groundwork (learning how to mine effectively, build auto-farms etc.), but was finding the world a bit disappointing - desert, prairie, desert, prairie, desert, prairie, desert, prairie, yippee forest, desert, prairie, desert, prairie, desert, prairie - you get the idea.

I thought seed meant, well, like wheat lol until I stumbled across something on the forums and learned what seed actually meant.
Anyway, the upshot was I started a new Survival World using your seed - and I'm thrilled.
I can't stop wandering around and just gawping at all the stuff I didn't even know existed.

So I just wanted to say thank you KeepOnDigging - it looks like I'll be doing just that for a very long time on 35267400, or as I'm going to rename it - Utopia.

Cyrusblaze - very many thanks for your comprehensive and detailed reply - much appreciated :)

Yeah, it's probably a 1.7 thing. I've built and demolished so many egg farms lol - I just want one that suits me, so I'm going with the half-slab version.

My next project will be a chicken farm - I need those feathers and jumping in and slashing around seems a little blood thirsty - they all stand there looking at you with those big innocent eyes ,,,,,,,,,,,,, what can I say .... I'm daft.

I am trying to use the method of chickens on still water as in this video (see at 1min 10 secs on).

    Embed Removed: https://www.minecraftforum.net/linkout?remoteUrl=http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xy24fd_minecraft-how-to-make-an-automatic-chicken-farm_videogames
Basically the signs hold the still water the chickens are on, but let the eggs drop down to the moving water, which floats them within reach.

But when I spawn my chickens, the baby chickens drop through as well :(

Any ideas as to why his don't and mine do - I'd be grateful for any help.

    Quote from Rasah

Short answer: Yes you wasted your time. Slabs only prevent mobs from spawning on that tile.

-It doesn't matter that they are sandstone slabs and not something else. Mobs can walk on half slabs they just can't be spawned on them.

Isn't it fun being a newb!? :D Here is some detailed information for you...

    Wiki: http://minecraft.gam...wn#Mob_spawning

Thank you - you answered my main question which was they can't spawn there but can walk on them.
So much for my 3 deep slabs idea lol/

Yes it is fun being a newb - so much to discover and do!!!!!!!!! Exciting :)

Sorry to hear you wasted all your time

But here are some ways to keep your house safe (you may already know a few):

Thanks for the reply - not sure which option I'll go for yet but I think probably a "moat" of some kind with retractable bridges.

posted a message on Walking same as spawning?
I've read a lot about mobs not being able to "spawn" on half-bricks (slabs) - but what about walk on them?

I surrounded my house with a 3 wide path of sandstone slabs (positioned correctly i.e. in the space - lower half = slab, upper half = air. I figured that's why they can't spawn on them - cos of that top half of air.)

So I go charging out my house one morning without looking and straight into a skeleton and creeper - they were stood on my slabs. So I double checked by putting dirt squares on the slabs where the mobs were stood, on the and yep, they "floated" above the air pocket).

So, is it that the slab rule doesn't work if the slabs are sandstone?
Or is it that mobs can walk on them (i.e. walking not being the same as spawning)?
Or is it something entirely different I don't know about yet (a newbie).

Have I wasted a lot of time making and laying over 400 blasted slabs? (That would be par for the course for me lol).

posted a message on Water not flowing - is area too small?
I wanted to make a simple automatic chicken farm.
    I followed this plan
EXCEPT .... my flow are from outside to central channel is only 5 blocks, not 7.

The water is static in the "chicken" area in the 3 rows furthest from the centeal channel. The 2 rows closest to the central channel do flow to the channel. It's the same on both sides of the central channel.

I've tested it by dropping eggs into the static water and they just sit there.

Is all the water not flowing towards the central channel, because it's less than 7 blocks?

Or is it that I've put the water in wrong? (I've been reading up on water flow but only half get it).
I've tried forcing the flow by adding blocks.
I've tried removing water and replacing it (by bucket).

Any advice would be very welcome. Thank you.

posted a message on Everlasting water flooding everywhere
I tried capping it off by building a taller structure around it and messed up royally - must have left gaps. I've a solid mass of flowing water about 16x16x16. I've spent an entire day making it worse lol.

I think I'll cut my losses, learn from the experiences of world 1 (like don't kill chickens close to home as it takes a whole game day to find some to oh so slowly lure back to base ..... and many other equally dim, should have been obvious, mistakes.

Thanks for the posts guys :)

I'm a week in to minecraft and love it. But I'm stuck after trying to build an automatic chicken farm.

I did the glass structure above stone method with a hopper and chest. It was ugly so I decided to dismantle it.
Now I've got water flooding everywhere - trying to knock down every block (and all the 27 million I added in an effort to do so) but I keep drowning or having to come out, get swept away, battle my way back ..... you get the picture. I've been at it for hours now and am totally disheartened - thinking of starting a new world (arrrrgggghhh all that terra forming I did gone to nothing).

I've tried placing torches, doors and signs - didn't work :(

Is there a solution? I just wanna get rid of the blasted water :(
