I'm not Way, but I still have some advice to give. Just do the obvious, so first tutorials, then small mods or programs. Keep in mind you have no obligation to release anything, so if you aren't happy with it, don't release it. If you DO decide to release a mod, do so, but make it do something at least a little bit different from everything else. Once you feel confident enough to tackle a large mod you really want to become popular, first think of something unique you can do. Then code what you want. Textures can wait until later. I usually make my own programs using a simple order: Required, useful, pretty. So I first write code that does what I want, then try to make it better without breaking the functionality. Making fancy GUIs is the last thing on my mind.
EDIT: That having been said, I was quite serious about reading the last page or two before you comment. Usually, issues have already been posted and resolved there. I've seen a thread once where the same bug was reported four times on one page, and seeing that sort of post annoys me to no end.
Open the text editor. In the bar above the actual space you type in you should be able to find three smaller bars with the text "Paragraph", "Font Family" and "Font Size". You need font size to alter the size of your letters. As for the bold, just click on the fourth symbol from the left, a B.
Well, there goes your legacy. First fire, now seeds... They really should consider asking you before adding the dumbest of things to the mod. Poor Vazkii would be rolling around in his flowerbed if he heard... Fire-infused fire.
Well, I can tell you that it works in Twilight Forest, MystCraft Ages and Middle Earth (Lord of the Rings mod) in addition to the Overworld, so I'd say you're right.

Trust me, I know how you feel. That would be my first reaction as well.
