Okay, I hate to bring up a suggestion post now that the topic's more about the upcoming changes in the next version, but I have to get this one off my chest.
AFAIK, (but I haven't played with this a little while, so it might have changed) some "functioning" sigils require a certain orb. Like, the Lva and Water sigils REQUIRE T1 orb, and you can't use T2 orb to craft them. Likewise, the Air sigil needs a T2, and so forth. But again, I'm not sure. :/
That changed a LOOONG time ago. You now have a minimum, so you can skip the T2 and T4 orbs if you want. Neither of these is required for progression, though both are recommended. T2 to make upgraded Blood Runes to help with making a T3, T4 to supply the extra power to kill four Withers for the beacons. But neither is actually required unless you want an Energy Blaster, which requires a T2 in a Ritual of Binding (for which you need a T3).
A word of advice: wait until the next build comes out. The current one is like ThaumCraft without wands, you can get the ores but you can't use anything. You can't make the staff in the current version, and while a fix is coming out the research system is being altered. This is why fixing it is not as simple as fixing it in the dev-builds, then releasing, because it would leave you without a functional research system.
