Well we can double check with a dxdiag report. And I was going off the info on the gateway site about the nv52 series of laptop, it doesn't mention shipping with a windows 7 version at all.
To obtain the DxDiag file:
Press the Windows Key (the key with the Windows logo on your keyboard) + R (at the same time).
Type in DxDiag and press Enter or click OK. This will open the DirectX diagnostic tool.
Click on the Save All Information Button
Save this file to your Windows desktop and name it dxdiag.
While it does look like the computer is 64 bit capable and likely came with a 64 bit version of vista, it seems that someone upgraded it to windows 7 with a 32 bit version.
Son has been playing minecraft over 3 months. I did download drivers, but after it did not work, I did some research. Because this is a lenovo ThinkCenter, there is a possibility that they created something just for their drivers. due to this, I uninstalled the video drivers, and re-installed the old ones.
But that being said, it worked with the old drivers - before I did the snapshot update, it did not work with the snapshot update, nor did it work with the new drivers after the snapshot update.
I have not monkeyed with the memory - this is a refurbished machine I purchased approx 18 mos ago from IBM. At that time, my son was playing console games and not so much on the pc. That is why I was not worried about memory or graphics at that time. (but will admit, did not want to buy a vista machine)
If these drivers from the intel site don't or didn't work for you, it's most likely as you said, that lenovo used branded drivers. And as far as I can tell you have the latest drivers from the lenovo site for your system. It's possible that when you updated it updated the LWJGL library include in the minecraft installation. The new LWJGL could require a higher version of OpenGL then the drivers of your video card support. There was some debate awhile back about updating the LWJGL for just that reason.
There is a program I'd like you to download, it will test your video drivers and report the version of OpenGL that they support(among other things).
Download the opengl extension viewer from this page: http://www.realtech-...ew/download.php
There is a drop down on the page you need to choose the Opengl extension viwer in.
After you install and run the program. I'm looking for the info in this section of the page:
And if you click the see details section it will show you even more info about the OpenGL support. Screenshots of both pages would be great, or you can just pass along the info it gives you.
Some anti-virus software and firewalls can block minecraft from downloading completely. AVG seem s to be the most common offender.
Try temporarily disabling and anti-virus and/or firewall software, and giving it another go.

9 and 12 aren't used by minecraft for anything.

I have seen other people have trouble using the beta release of java tho. Going to go take a look at that thread and see if was the same issue.
Unrelated, but there are newer graphics drivers on the gateway site for you. Direct link is http://global-download.gateway.com/GDFiles/Driver/VGA/VGA_ATI_8.653.0.0_W7x86W7x64_A.zip?acerid=634124516241607157&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=NV SERIES&Step3=NV52&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=GATEWAY&SC=PA_6G
but you are welcome to hunt them down yourself.

Still you should remove all your java installations, and then install only the 64 bit version.

You have a 32 bit version of windows.
64 bit java won't work on a 32 bit systems.
You should unistall all version of java you have installed, and install the latest 32 bit version.

I've seen many MCpatcher errors lately.
MultiMC or Magiclauncher and optifine are the way to go.

Go into the .minecraft folder and delete the bin folder.
Then try relaunching minecraft.

If the suggestion gerbil has made doesn't help, a dxdiag report would help us to help you.

Try temporarily disabling and anti-virus and/or firewall software, and giving it another go.
If that doesn't help, I'll need an error report.
You can use the error logging script in this thread: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1383256-advanced-minecraft-error-test/
to get a more detailed error report that will help out. Download the script from that thread, and paste the results back here.
