I'm not having much luck with installing this mod. I just don't seem to have any utilities capable of opening minecraft.jar without converting it to a standard folder or something similarly useless. What is there that'll do this for the Mac?

Joke's on you, guys. Notch has confirmed Ghasts will spawn near portals ON THE NORMAL WORLD!

But he also said they need a minimum space of 5x5x5 to spawn. This means open portal rooms are dangerous. Have fun fending off those creatures in your kitchen. :wink.gif:

    So.

How long do you think it'll be until people start making ghast killing machines? Since I believe notch has also stated that ghasts can spawn in areas with light, a room with a 5x5x5 area for the ghasts to spawn in totally lit up, surrounded by obsidian, with a water trap to drown the ghast or something.

Assuming of course that ghasts drop something useful, which they probably will.

How would a water trap work for a huge, flying mob though?

It may work if one were to expand the spawn chamber to include lava flows jutting out of the walls to act like spikes (see below), so that the ghasts will damage themselves if they turn or move at all without actually impeding that movement like a cactus block would. The extraordinary size of ghasts should prevent their drops from contacting lava, since the item should spawn from somewhere around the creature's center, making it fairly easy for a water flow in the bottom of the chamber to collect and transport whatever they may drop.

Viewed from the side, one of the lava spikes would looks something like this:
:cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone:
:cobblestone: :Lava: :VV: :VV: :VV: :VV: :VV: :VV:
:cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :cobblestone: :|:

    :cobblestone: = Any nonflammable material
    :Lava: = Lava source tile
    :VV: = Lava flow tiles
:|: = Sign, Ladder or other other block that repels fluids while permitting movement through the space.

posted a message on Horizontal portals?
Or even use hell as a garbage disposal instead of an incinerator. Not terribly practical, but definitely worth some style points. Being able to use it as a mildly Spartan-esque trap would also be quite entertaining.

Waiiit a moment... if we can make horizontal portals and one assumes that the other side of a portal spawns at the uppermost surface level of the appropriate world, then it should be possible to build mob killers/collectors that can use the vertical difference of the portals to place the collection point of the trap on almost any z-level. I could build a base in the sky with a wondrous portal in the ceiling through which an endless stream of wealth flows (provided that it was built in a chunk close enough to the actual trap and that the game would actually simulate water flows and mob activity in both dimensions at once). It may even work with exclusively vertical portals if the portals deposit creatures directly in from of them instead of within the gate structure. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I believe Notch has mentioned inter-server gates as a far off design goal. This certainly seems like the right way to do that.

I would love to be able to make horizontal portals just so that I can kick things/people into them. Dumping my garbage into hell just seems so much more stylish than using a lava incinerator. It might make it a bit difficult to exit hell through that portal though, depending on how/if Notch decides to handle momentum between portals. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

posted a message on Payment Problems
After discovering the game through the free weekend, I am finally getting around to purchasing it. Unfortunately, I seem to be having difficulties with PayPal. Whenever I attempt to finalize the purchase I am informed that "You cannot complete this action on the card you have selected. Please select another card." I am using an American Express gift card valued at 25 USD, which my research indicates should more than cover the 13.70-ish USD price of the game (after currency conversion). I am still going through the customer service processes of both American Express and Paypal to track down the issue, but my present hunch is that the payment is failing because of the different currencies being used. If so, I doubt this is the first time it has happened and I was hoping that someone here may know how I can resolve the issue.
