Rails also work rather well. I use water to force them into the rail pickup zone. They are contained by half slabs and a low wall. I push a button to send a rail car at them, it's hit them and they are picked up by the cart. The carts bounces back, I hit the button again and off they go to their waiting stall.

I think Y = 11 is superior to 12. The idea that 12 is safer from lava than 11 is essentially a wash. But now we're splitting hairs. I personally go for max coverage at the expense of efficiency. I make my tunnels two blocks apart. That is, [tunnel]<block><block>[tunnel]

That's the challenge though. Those things ARE in your world, you just need to get more playing experience and explore more. I'm assuming you're playing survival of course. If so then one thing you should work on that will help you expand your world a lot is becoming adept at traveling the Nether and using a portal travel system to travel quickly in the overworld. That's more valuable than a horse in my opinion.

    This.

Keep in mind you may have to travel 3,4 or even 5000 blocks from your spawn to find the right biome for the things you want. Some may be even further out.

Is there a way to toggle off the coordinates? I am fine with the grid staying up, just want to get rid of the coordinates display.

I know the developers can't always know how many iterations of a version they'll go through, but it would make more sense to pad the version number with zeroes if they think it will exceed 10. So currently we would be in 1.08.1, or even 1.08.01.

Looting is really good if you collect leather manually by killing cows. Lots 'o meat and leather.

Most of the top level enchantments are going to make your sword nearly unrepairable. Keep that in mind. This is why having a good XP grinder is handy, as you can churn out good enchantment books fairly easily.

posted a message on Any way to single out zombie villagers?
A guy on our old folks server has a zombie spawner that he uses to cure zombie villagers. He has it set up so all zombies are forced by water to go down a one block wide tunnel and fall into lava. Before the lava is a piston setup that allows a zombie to pass over the drop to the lava. So if a zombie villager comes along, you flip the switch, the piston comes out preventing the fall to the lava, and he passes along to a little pen where he can be cured. As soon as he passes safely over the lava drop, flip the switch again and zombies start falling into lava again. Obviously the tunnel walls are glass so you can see what's going on.

posted a message on Need help with Nether Portals
Best way to tunnel in the nether is to do it up high near the bedrock. I usually tunnel and build portals around y = 116. The tunneling is much much easier, no lava oceans or huge caverns to cross. The only hassle is occasionally you uncover a lava source block. If you tunnel carefully these won't be a problem.

I am not trying to be a jerk. Seriously. Go to the Internet and start Googling about these topics. Mastery of the above will prevent what happened to you from ever happening again.

Personally I would not rule out the nether. It really does reduce your distances so dramatically it is worth the investment. As for it being a ghast filled nightmare there are two approaches to avoiding them:

    1) Go above the nether and build your tracks up there, you can use ender pearls to get up and dark oak to get down. However, some people consider using dark oak to break bedrock as a 'glitch' and therefore are reluctant to use this.

    2) Go just below bedrock, level 118y(ish), and tunnel. You do not get ghasts. The only risk is you do get occasional uncover lava but this easy to deal with. It takes a lot of mining but netherrack is like butter, so it is very fast. to go large distances.

#2 for sure. Take whatever pains or measures necessary to get up to z = 112 or so in the Nether, then tunnel. MUCH much easier

posted a message on Slime Farm Help Needed!
Everything you mentioned seems about right. If slimes aren't spawning, then the possible reasons for this are:

    • It's not in a slime chunk
    • You're not far enough away for slimes to spawn
    • You're too far away and slimes are spawning then despawning
    • You've reached your mob cap <-- most likely answer
I'm not an expert on mob cap calculations, but you need to discover and light up any caves around your spawning pads. The idea is prevent any other mobs from spawning anywhere near your slime farm. There is a limit (cap) on how many mobs can be spawned near you, and if you have caves nearby and they aren't lit up, then skellies and zombies and the like will spawn, thus reducing the chance for slimes to spawn.

On that note, your spawn pads should be lit up as bright as you can make them. Slimes will spawn in any light level, so you want the pads as bright as possible so nothing else spawns on them.
