posted a message on 1.9pre 100% CPU usage bug FIXED in 1.9pre5
I have never, in any minecraft version and in any of the prereleases, run into a single CPU problem.

I have it running on 3 separate computers here. It must be a problem only a minority face, but they're vocal enough about it on the forums.

It's good that he fixed it of course. I'm just stating that the problem can't be as rampant as it's made out to be. It's running fine on a single core laptop, dual core desktop and a mac of some sort at my house between 3 different people.

I also have to point since someone mentioned "primitive graphics". There's isn't much to the game in terms of vertices and textures, so it LOOKs primitive. However the game still needs to keep track of hundreds of thousands of blocks, updating them accordingly as you move. It's not an issue of how much memory your card has, it's all about the processing speed.

What has always been troublesome for me is that Minecraft maxes the GPU on one of my video cards (NVIDIA 3xSLI) generating immense heat unless I crank up the card's fan. It maxes the GPU even on the world selection screen.

A lot of SLi's setups overheat when faced with a bigger workload. I'm not sure what it's doing on the world selection screen, because unoptimized code or not.. it shouldn't do that. I almost doubt you on that statement.

posted a message on I sure hope they're fixing this.
I think it should be ordered in terms of age.

Naturally I feel Strongholds should be the earliest structures, then events had torn the world apart causing ravines. Then someone mined.

So, the generation should likely go in that order. If intersecting structures could effectively be transitions it would look awesome.

Like a stronghold ripped apart by an earthquake (ravine). A mineshaft with a bridge through a ravine and then digging an opening into the side of a stronghold and stopping. I would look more natural. The land would look like it has history and a story to tell.

posted a message on Splash potions...
The splash potions are less effective. You gain less hearts than a regular potion. Timed buffs last for less time as a splash potion as well.

An 8 minute buff becomes 6 minute, etc. The only benefit is that you can give to allies with a splash potion.

In singleplayer I avoid all splash potions except for debuff and damage potions.

No more animals spawns. It's supposed to be like that.

Breed the animals and take care of them. Put them in a pen and get a wheat farm going to feed them.

The blaze rod dropped by the newly-added mob was previously useless, so Notch scrambled to find something to do with it, which was potions.

    Ummm... no. Not at all.

They added those items BECAUSE they were adding a potion system.

They weren't included in the same update because the potion system wasn't completed. But it was fully intended.

Don't make stuff up when you really don't know. Better to be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and prove it.

    that was dumb.
get the cords of the first nether portal, make a new portal in the over world, and walk to the old portal in the nether.

Unless you disable the portal in the Nether. You have to make a new portal over 512 blocks away in the over world. Otherwise it just uses the same portal again.

That's really bad logic. Notch is making a game for his customers. People are paying, and have paid, money for it. Part of being a paying customer is being able to make demands on *some* level. If 99% of the community thinks that something just doesn't work, he should change it.

The real problem is that people often make demands that are too personalized. Instead of "This is why this is actually good for the game" they go straight off into "I want this, and screw anyone who it might negatively impact". And, yes, that includes people who fail to understand the problems of making new game modes and toggles for everything in the game.

    There's the problem.

First of all, he's not making the game for the customers. He's just making the game and the customers are deciding to buy it. It originally began as a hobby and something to do in his spare time.

Also, a few very vocal threads on a forum by a small collective hardly constitutes 99% of the community. In fact, I would go as far as saying that the vocal few are probably closer to 1% or 2% if I were to make an educated guess.

Lets face it, well over a million players and at an estimated 2% that's 20,000 people. I doubt there's even that many who frequent this section of the forums. Even then, not everyone on the forum are bad mouthing the changes and updates.

You could never know exactly how many people are in favor of these updates unless a widespread poll was put out there.

Unless the game is absolutely broken and you can't play it. You can't make demands, at all. You can make suggestions, but you have no right to demand anything.

Have you ever heard the term "All sales are final".. yeah, that applies here. All sales are final. Suck it up and stop playing if you're so displeased. You've spent your money, now move on. I hate to make it sound bad, but it's the truth. You're not going to get your way.

    Quote from SergeantGrumbles

Did ANYONE arguing about version numbers read my entire post?

tl;dr (although if you couldn't be bothered to read that tiny blurb of text then shame on you! Shame!)
There is no universally correct way to do version numbers. Just some ways are more accepted than others. (going from 1.5 to 1.4 will get you labeled as an idiot.)
This means that 1.9 -> 2.0 is correct, and 1.9 -> 1.10 CAN BE CORRECT AS WELL.
The quote states that the 1.10 system is usually (BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY) in freeware, which would explain why it's totally alien to me BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT'S INCORRECT.

Also, just because Diablo II has a 1.10 doesn't mean it came after 1.9. As far as I was concerned, before I read the article on version numbers that is, 1.10 means they plan to have a 1.11 and a 1.12, like how DOTA does their updates. (6.48, 6.48b, 6.49, 6.49c, etc) Once they reach 6.99, it goes to 7.0, not 6.100.

    Actually.

Major Version . Minor Version . Revision

    1.9.4 is..

    Major Version = 1
    Minor Version = 9
    Revision = 4

1.10 is absolutely correct as it would be...

    Major Version = 1
    Minor Version = 10
    Revision = none

It's far more likely that the full release will be 2.0. I think the talk of a 1.10 was before his current plan to push straight on to release. Seeing as how the release will mark a new major version.

But viewing version numbers as actual numbers is a very quick way to get yourself labeled as an idiot. Plain and simple. Besides... when was the last time you saw the number 1.9.4 or 7.6.3 ... two decimals in a number? Really, use some common sense. It's NOT A NUMBER.

    Quote from Luperion

I have been waiting for October 18th eagerly, waiting for 1.9 final to be released, so that I can play Minecraft the way it's meant to be played - with mods.

And now I see this from Notch? No release for another month? This is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Without a 1.9 stable release there are no mods, and without mods I can't generate worlds to play on that I would want to keep for any length of time. For example, two of the mods I use alter world generation - Big-Ass Villages and Stronghold Fix (repairs damage to strongholds that caves and ravines cause) and also Stronghold Locator, so I can find the damn things easily without throwing Ender Eyes every 10 steps.

I don't care if they release 1.9 now and then patch it daily until it's 1.9.23! PLEASE release 1.9 now so that modders can start making mods for it, and we can play with it in that state until Minecon!

You honestly come off as a spoiled brat.

Notch is doing what's best for the development of the game. So it's in the best state possible when it's RELEASED. It has nothing to do with pleasing you. Get over yourself.

posted a message on The Enchantment Roulette
It's a side perk for now. Look at time spent vs. rewards. Mining and building as you always have will likely produce more results faster than farming for an enchant and then doing the job. It was NEVER meant to be an absolute reward system.

    • I can likely find more diamonds in the same time it takes someone to farm for Fortune and then mine for diamonds
    • I can mine a longer tunnel than someone who farmed for a high efficiency pick before tunneling
    • I can build that grass ladder and get grass in places WAY faster than someone who first waits for a silk touch enchant.
    • I can easily spend my time mining and finding more than enough materials to replace my tools as I use them, so unbreaking III or IV isn't worth it in that time.

Essentially, It doesn't pay off to sit in front of a mob spawner grinding out levels for an enchant when you could just get the job done.

Like it or not, the suggestion to treat it as a side perk is better. It's also the more efficient way to get things done.

Really... who ever said you HAD to get the right enchants before getting the job done. You don't. So don't do it. Just grab it as it comes.

Perhaps when boss fights are implemented you will have a method to get experience boosts and you can farm out enchants then.

I'll put this all another way.

We have no right to tell Notch how to manage his game. He began it as a hobby and did what he liked. We merely paid to experience the fruits of his labor. That doesn't mean we have any right to dictate how he should proceed. The fact he made money is merely chance in the grand scheme of things, it still and likely will be his hobby for a long time. We have no right to interfere.

We have a right to voice our opinions because it doesn't interfere with Notch. He can pick and choose what he will listen to. Notch has a right to make his game how he wants, he can do this because it's his property and he can do as he wishes with it. What people fail to understand is that your rights extend to the end of your nose, no more and no less. Your rights should never interfere with another person's rights. EVER.

I think a small part of the problem is lack of foresight. There are complaints about systems that are either half finished or rely on other future systems to make sense. But they treat every release as if it's done and what they have is what they get.

I think some of the issue could also of been avoided if Notch had been able to lay out a loose road map. Something to let us know where the game will end up and what he feels it should look like. If he wanted to have a game that included seasons, potions, levels, enchants, boss fights and so on from the beginning. Then maybe people wouldn't of been so opinionated when they were finally included.

We honestly don't know how much of the development was clearly laid out ahead of time. Instead we base the development entirely on what we see through tweets and actual patches. It appears to be haphazardly thrown together, when it's likely closer to the opposite.

posted a message on 1.9 cauldron secret?
I really have no idea what the purpose of the cauldron is. What I've done so far is to have a fire below it. It looks nice as furniture. But that's about it.

I understand you can fill a vial with water from it 3 times. but if I had a 1x1 puddle of water I can do it infinitely.

I'm assuming for now it's for something that isn't quite implemented. Perhaps eventually we could use it like cakes, but for mushroom soup or for a long term supply of potion buffs.

*sigh* Once again, another complaint about the time it takes for high level enchantments.

Here's something you obviously aren't remembering. Boss fights aren't in the game yet and neither are functional villages. Both may prove to be valuable XP sources.

Seriously... even though Minecraft isn't technically an RPG. When was the last time you played an RPG and boss fights or quests were worth LESS than monster grinding? It doesn't happen (or shouldn't). The fact is, you're only using a fraction of the final XP income you'll see.

DLC ruined the modern game system, big companies that like to squeeze out of the last cents of the player (COD maps pack, anyone?) and now you come tell me notch, who started like the indie developer for excellence, is going to add them when minecraft will be full released? am i the only one who isn't sleeping and think this thing really **** me off or are you all blind fan boys?? That guy would be no one without aplha and beta and FUTURE players of MC, and that DLC is the proof that he just cares about the money instead of the game and its fans instead

    That's ********.

DLC extends the life of games and is what's keeping the modern gaming system up. Everyone demands more content, but it costs money to make.

If DLC ruined the system, then why are people buying it? You obviously lack critical thinking on that subject. You're voicing an opinion based on your own personal prejudices and not reason.

If something makes money, then it's both wanted and valued appropriately. That's how it works. There is no other way around it. Period. If DLC makes money, it's wanted and valued appropriately. Period.

EDIT: I would also remind you that money Notch makes is what allowed Minecraft to get to the state it is in today. So before you trash talk the guy for wanting to make money, you need to remember that he's taking it and spending it on making MORE games. He's yet to mention a Minecraft sequel and he's definitely not using focus groups or trends to make his other games. He's doing what he likes on his own time, that's not the path to take for greed.

On a side note. I could easily see DLC affecting players only. Perhaps player modifications like capes and specialized skins with new effects and so on. Any DLC that affects gameplay will only splinter the community as servers with and without DLC are separated. I'm almost certain a gamer like Notch realizes this and would never add anything that would force a separation of servers.
