posted a message on launcher lag of death
It happened to my friend as well, and he still can't play the game. I posted a thread about it a while ago, but I'm not sure what happened to it. Have you tried playing it in your browser?

posted a message on Minecraft applet slows computer to crawl
My friend has played minecraft for several months with no problems, either in the browser or from the client. Unfortunately, after clearing the .minecraft directory, his launcher would crash and burn, taking down the rest of his computer with it, unless the process was killed.

Note: The game runs fine in the browser, without any of the symptoms described below.

Per his explanation, here's what happened:
    - Minecraft client (Version 1.8) failed to login (login server might have been down, mighta timed out, etc).
    - Deleted the .minecraft folder to get rid of any mods that might have been conflicting with the login (Equal Exchange, Philosopher's Stone mods loaded).
    - Launched minecraft.exe again, and the computer began to slow down at an increasing rate, as the computer slowly became less and less responsive.
    - The window for the minecraft launcher would never appear.
    - The computer would eventually get it's stuff together, and resume standard levels of responsiveness, but the java process was still running in the background, jumping around between 20 and 40% cpu usage.

Here's what we've done to try and fix it:
    - Delete the .minecraft folder (again)
    - Delete the launcher program and download a new one from minecraft.net
    - Restarted the computer
    - Uninstall java in its entirety.
    - Installed 32-bit java, same problems
    - Installed 64-bit java, same problems
    - Update various drivers (there was a video card update), still no luck.
    - Uninstall other java-dependent programs (he didn't use em anyways).
    - Googled a rough description of the problem, turning up squat.

    Suddenly, a ray of hope:
    - After booting up into safe mode, we launched the minecraft executable, and to our imminent surprise, the launcher appeared without reducing his computer to a pile of coagulating molasses. Although it's nice that this worked, the game wouldn't load pass the login screen.

So since I'm out of spontaneous bursts of insight, I was hoping someone here might be able to cast some light upon this depressing scene.

For those who care to take a glance at the specs of said computer, below lies a copy of dxdiag's take on what's been going down under the hood:

Not sure if this should go in Support or discussion, but I think it might get a little less negative attention here.

After rebuilding my server's spawnzone with the help of the server software update, I wanted to see if :tnt: would break blocks in the spawnjail. I made a 3x3x3 cube of :tnt: in the center of said spawnjail, and set off the top block. The server then proceeded to blow up everything. See before/after pictures below.

    :tnt: :tnt: :tnt:

NOTE: RIGHT-CLICK -> VIEW IMAGE TO SEE THE WHOLE PICTURE, if you want.

Spawnjail Before (All "Before" Pictures were taken after the terrain was restored):

    After:

(See the TNT in the middle?)

Console GUI: (Look at RAM Usage, and I'm the only player online)
    http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/3161/screencap4.png

    :tnt: :tnt: :tnt:

Conclusion: Oh my. The server seems to be using lots more ram than normal, and only sends out chunk updates every now and then, revealing new craters up to 50+ blocks away. From what I can tell, the initial explosion blew up all 27 tnt blocks after the first one blew up, but since the server did not recognize that a player broke the other 26, it just put them back down, and the subsequently exploded again. and again, and so on.

I don't personally have any qualms with this, but I figured I'd post it in case this happened to someone and they don't know why; Also, someone should tell Notch about this.

You can't actually do that. Left click = delete block, right click = build torch there. There is no way to see if you want to attack a mob or you want to place torch, minecraft isn't mind control.

Try smacking an enemy with your torch - It won't stick a torch on the enemy or any block, it will deal a small amount of damage to them...

The torches in /indev/ are on fire, no? So it is only sensible that when used to hit stuff with, there is a chance that they will be set on fire as well, like the flint and tinder, except it's more of a weapon that can hit enemies instead of only unoccupied tiles. What do you think?
