So you've finished the spawn building and the prison so far?
Looks nice. Are you planning to build huge towers for the wealthy or something?

Anyway, an underground village is massively awkward because a "house" is defined as a door with one side having more roof blocks. Except underground, every single block up to the surface is a roof block, so...yeah, you can imagine how counting them would be a headache. And to have one side have more blocks the other, there might have to be 2 places open to the sky, the central golem spawning place and possibly a small area at the "back" of the house to define them.

It just doesn't look the same in a superflat world...kinda boring without the obstacles to build around to make the roads not a straight line.

-Cloning tubes could be tubes of green glass filled with water
-Add tubes and glass winding everywhere
-Keep it very dark (slab it to stop mob spawns, and it'll also create a few bats)
-Make plenty of shelves with cobwebs
-Make a few medical beds/tables (splash a bit of redstone around it as blood)
Anyway, you could explain it as that you're taking the villagers and experimenting on them. Heheh.

Apr 19, 2014I use a layer of water flowing inwards in my pens so the animals don't glitch out in the walls. Makes my barn look pretty interesting, especially because it has white and blue decor instead of the usual wood.Posted in: Survival Mode
Anyway, putting tons of animals in a small space especially in the middle of a redstone machine probably isn't a good idea. Try using glass so at least they won't suffocate when they're glitching around. Or you'll have to be very careful.
Feb 15, 2014Try adding a water feature around the edges which flows inward on all sides. The chickens will be pushed into the center so they don't glitch and suffocate in the walls. Though you won't be able to collect the eggs anymore, it should be safer for them.Posted in: Survival Mode
Feb 15, 2014Silk touch on an axe is ONLY beneficial if you're relocating your library. Everything an axe chops quickly drops 1 of itself anyway, and you should use shears on leaves if you really want them.Posted in: Survival Mode
Fortune.... Most of the stuff an axe chops fastest doesn't drop more than it usually does with Fortune. Except leaves, I think, but the axe will run out really quickly if you go around chopping leaves off everywhere.
It does make you get more of a crop, so it's useful if you're farming and you only have an axe.
So, mostly useless. Enchant it with Efficiency or Unbreaking first, then Fortune if you really want to.

You're right though my castle incorporates fantasy elements and ignores realism where I think unrealistic stuff makes it better. The difference is that I am making a conscious decision to abandon realism not simply ignoring realistic castle construction because I don't know any better.

Hi, my name is zickens :), and i am (or was, for a very short period of time) the newest user on Curse. I am here today to show you how to increase your Charcoal efficiency, while reducing your harvest times, and hopefully inspire you to find quick, and simple, solutions for all the annoying conundrums to be found on Minecraft (which have proven to be quite a lot! )
So one day i decided to boot up minecraft after a long photo-retouch session, just so i could still call myself a sane individual the next morning. I log in, open up my little humble world (with a carved-into-mountain dirthouse and all ), and jump straight ahead into the endless tunnels of stone. Now, i came back about half an hour later, with a respectable amount of iron and some mushrooms, and i entered my little, humble, dirthouse, only to find that i had no coal. Yes, you read that right, no coal.
What a shame it is to a minecrafter to run out of freaking coal. One of the most common ores of the entire game was missing from all of my chests, furnaces; even the mountain had no coal. But well, problems were made to be solved, weren't they?
I opened my chest, and noticed that it had lots, and lots of Wood, not Wooden Planks, but Wood. And then it all came to me: "Dude, you can burn wood with some more wood to make charcoal, right?". Yes, you can :). This feature is incredibly useful in most maps, especially in those new Amplified worlds, where mining coal from a mountain and reenacting a voxel version of goat-simulator-meets-mission-impossible, is essentially, the same.
So i ran to the furnace with a big stack 'o sixty-four, split the wood in half, and burned my way to charcoal. "****ing nailed it", i said to myself, but soon i would learn just how awfully i was making my Charcoal.
So one day, after learning that not only could i burn wood with Wood, but that i could make some socery happen and turn some Wood into Wooden Planks that would have the same burning time, i asked to myself... how much blocks of Wood can you turn into Charcoal, while using the same amount of Wood as fuel for your furnace? This question would haunt me for quite the time...
Days passed, and i had already filled an A3 paper sheet with useless calculations and ratios and functions that did not work, or that worked only partially for a especific amount of Wood, and, to be honest, i was just too lazy for derivatives ).
But finally, today, while waiting in a café for someone, i figured it out, and i must confess, i felt like the dumbest person alive. (Now we get into the technical part of the post ).
As some of you may know, Wooden Planks are able to burn 1.5 blocks at the furnace. Now, not only this passes plenty shy of the 100 blocks that a bucket of lava can burn, but is annoyingly difficult to calculate how many Wooden Planks you need to transmute your Wood stack into Charcoal, while keeping in mind the Wooden Planks you just took to burn your Wood.. and it's all... just ... ahg!
Anyways, simplifying, a Wooden Plank burns 1.5 blocks. Done.
Now, i tried creating a function of X that would give me a set output Y, Y being the amount of blocks i would need to use in order to burn the remaining Wood after the subtraction for the Furnace's fuel, but i failed. Nontheless, i didn't give up (Thank you, Napoleon Hill), and continued filling my A3 sheet, until it was full, and i failed again.
But didn't give up, and so, while waiting for some friends at a café, and having drawed the entrace of it in a blank napkin out of sheer boredom, i started thnking about the whole Wood-Charcoal process; then it all came to me, once more.
I figured that, instead of worrying so much about the original Wood blocks, i could approach the problem differenly, by looking at how many Wooden Planks could burn how many Wood blocks. So i said thought: "Ok, let's say you have 32 blocks of wood, how many Wooden Planks would i need to burn those 32 after the subtraction? Okay, lets see now... 32 divided by 4 • 1.5 should give me the amount i'm looking for. Ok, it gives me 5.33-; third-blocks don't exist on Minecraft yet, so it's 6. now i would need to substract 6 from 32: 32-6=26 , so i would technically have an excess, because six blocks of Wood equals 24 blocks of Wooden Planks, which burn 36 items, this isn't efficient, at all. Ok, lets see... let's try to find the most effiencient amounts of Wooden Planks to burn with.." And this is where i found it!
After a lot of experimentation, i found that the most efficient amounts of Wood to start with were, all of them, multiples of 7. they went like this:

INITIAL BLOCKS ------------------------ 21 ºººººº 28 ºººººº 35 ºººººº 42
BLOCKS NEEDED FOR BURNING -- ººººº 4 ºººººººº 5 ºººººººº 6 ººººº
So without much hesitation, i tried, and it worked! With a few rules...
The function --> serves the purpose of outputting the required amount of Wood Blocks to be turned into Wooden Blocks under these conditions:
A. The function may output whole numbers. Eg: 35 blocks divided by 7 = 5
B. If the output is a number that has decimal places, it must be rounded to the closest whole number. Eg: 37 blocks divided by 7 = 5.2857... = 6
C. The function is not applicable for values less than 2. It is advised to spend a little bit more time and gather at least 7 blocks of Wood.
Well folks, that is the story of how i came to solve a problem that was more of an itching on the back of my tongue, than a voxel-world mystery, This has been my first thread, i hope you like it and find it useful

Nice building though. Looks nice.
The iron farm is the giant building. The golems spawn inside the water fountain and get washed down the hole into the lava trap. I saw a similar design on YouTube once, though I can't remember who made it.
Now that I have my village / iron farm I will continue with my build. My next order of business after gathering materials will be to link the 3 mountains with stairs and bridges. I'm also thinking about adding a waterfall off the center mountain, I'll probably back light it with jack o lanterns.
Also I still have to finish the village. It isn't lit to my own specs yet, I cw want to remove all the torches.
I can't take credit for finding the seed. I discovered it online.
Apr 28, 2011I took the liberty of poking through the source code. Here's what I found:Posted in: Survival Mode
For each player in the game, every world chunk in a 9x9 square around that player is added to a HashSet (meaning no duplicate entries). Then for each chunk in the fully populated set, there is a 1/100,000 chance of a lightning strike in that chunk. Not only does the 1/100,000 have to come up on the pseudo-random number generator, but there are other conditions that have to be met and the code is too confusing to figure out at a glance.
When a lightning strike is generated, some weird math is performed but it basically picks a random (x, z) coordinate in the chunk and sets the y-coordinate to the upper-most solid block in that column. That (x, y, z) location is the strike origin. The actual lightning bolt entity is now created.
Here's where some weird stuff happens. If you're playing on Normal or Hard, and there are chunks within a 10 chunk square of you (I think?), and if the strike origin is flammable, that block is set on fire. Then four adjacent blocks are selected at random (including strike origin, duplicates allowed) and also set on fire. But this is all in the EntityLightningBolt constructor. In the actual update method, it sets the strike origin on fire again. I don't quite get this, but that's what it looks like to me. I don't even know if this code block gets executed.
Any entity that is within a bounding box that is 3 blocks horizontally away, 3 blocks vertically below, and 9 blocks vertically above the strike origin gets stuck by lightning. A lightning strike deals 5 damage (2.5 hearts) to any entity not immune to fire. As is already common knowledge, if the entity is a pig it will turn into a zombie pigman, and if the entity is a creeper it becomes a lightning-powered creeper with a shiny blue texture overlay that will detonate with twice the force of a normal creeper explosion (a normal creeper explosion has a force of 3, TNT has a force of 4, and lightning-powered creepers explode at force 6).
Entities are defined as the following (from Minecraft Wiki): Mob, Monster, Creeper, Skeleton, Spider, Giant, Zombie, Slime, PigZombie, Ghast, Pig, Sheep, Cow, Chicken, Wolf, Item, Arrow, Snowball, Egg, Painting, Minecart, Boat, PrimedTnt, FallingSand
That's about everything I could find. Some of it may be wrong, specifically the mechanics for determining the lightning strike event, so if anyone has evidence to the contrary I'd like to see it.
