Quick update: SOE/Daybreak just announced massive layoffs... there's a ton of change due in the coming weeks, especially the next few days, so hang tight for details.

Sorry I can't currently dedicate more time to HSM -- the fact of the matter is that I can't derive an income from HSM as a Minecraft mod, and I spend more time updating it than actually developing it, so it'd be insane to burn all of my time on it. NR, however, does have a future, and at it's current stage of development, I could take it in any number of directions...

Specifically, HSM 2.0... maybe. Depends on how I think I'd fare against Cube World and Trove. Point is, it's just an engine right now -- NR is likely not the only thing that I'll be producing with it, and likely not the first thing either. And either way, having my own engine is a far better long term investment than trying to keep up with the latest version of Minecraft :P

But uh, in other news, NR now has high quality decals! Can be used for eyes, mouths, little details, etc :)

Sorry for the stalling of streams, but things will resume when layoff related craziness is more certain.

Hey dawgs, quick update: as you may have heard in the news, SOE has just been acquired and been renamed to Daybreak Game Company! With that and the open beta of Landmark around the corner, I've been more than a bit busy, so streams are now postponed until further notice. Sorry for the inconsistency, I know it sucks. I can give more details in a week or two, so sit tight.

Otherwise, I just uploaded a video of Nebulous Rax with 60 FPS and crazy good lighting! Check it out!

Stay tuned for more details and resuming of streams... (quick note: I overdid it last time, so I'll have more consistent and less lengthy streams in the future.)

Hey guys, reminder and change of plans: I will streaming live at at 3:00 PM PST (an hour earlier than scheduled)! I will be updating Hack/Mine to 1.7, and I have a feeling that the client will be compiling today! We're really close, and if we get there, I'll start adding features for funsies! (Nothing too risky, of course.) Finally, I should have even better mic quality this time around, so come hang out and listen to Chrono Trigger/FF6 music with me! ;)

UPDATE: the stream went really well again! The client is compiling now!!! Now it just has to work past the opening screens, and we'll be good, hah. I'll be up again tomorrow by 4:00 PM PST, if not sooner, so come keep me if you like! (It'll be more thrilling once everything actually works, trust me.)

Just finished streaming for the night, and things went well! I actually think I'll have the client compiling this weekend. I'm tempted to stream Sunday as well to get this thing going, but we shall see.

I'm now aware of the downloads section being missing, and I have no idea what happened to it, lol. (I deleted a lot of the old blog-esque updates I posted because I ran out of room, so many I accidentally clipped it too.) I'll have it fixed tomorrow, it's too late tonight :(

    Good night all!

    Hi all,

It's been a few months, and I can safely say I'm over the worst of my health issue, and I currently feel pretty great! In fact, I feel well enough to do a spontaneous live stream, with more to come this week! I'll be live at at 5:00 PM PST, 8:30 PM PST Wednesday, and 4:00 PM PST next Saturday! (I don't expect much of anyone to visit today due to spontaneity, but hey, I'm in the mood.)

For those of you wondering, the gist of my health issue was learning that I have a viral condition and medicating it with a ****load of anti-virals (a novel and highly promising treatment for it.) This caused me to sleep a ridiculous amount, as I apparently wasn't getting the sleep I needed for years. This was a fairly horrible time in my life to have to deal with it, but I'm glad things got sorted out while I'm young and able to recover. My back pain issues are substantially improved, and I have a feeling of "wellness" that I don't recall ever having. Fortunately my prognosis is great, and I should be able to put this mostly behind me! So yay.

    Anyhow, I'll see y'all in a bit!

Hey all, update on things: I'm currently starting week eight of uber-sleep, and the sleepiness is still going strong. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if I'm tired for almost the full twelve weeks, unfortunately. (Which brings me to a correction, it's actually up to twelve weeks, not ten. Argh!) I felt a lot better the week before last, actually, then resumed constant lethargy last week :( We'll see how the next few weeks fare, but the coming weekends may be prime for me to actually get something done. Hurray! I'm very slowly improving!

Looking at the Spellscript page again, I discovered it actually has maps as well.
I found a bit of an odd problem while messing around, though.

I realize integers and ints are different in Java, but this is the first time I've encountered this in Spellscript. I can also use .intValue, but I can't declare an Integer.

I think you discovered a corner case where it's not properly coercing primitives in the case of Map lookups. Hmm... will have to fix it! I'm sure there are a billion other cases like this that exist atm, sadly. It's a young language!

One thing to note is that "Integer" is actually aliased to "Int" in Spellscript. Does using that alias solve the issue? Also, have you tried using Int.valueOf(x) or an Int constructor? I don't recall if static JVM functions were added yet.

    Quote from Hell_Ryder»
    anything new?

    Nope, just constant lethargy! *sobs*

The HSM wiki should have everything you need: www.spellscript.net

Sadly though, you won't have access to what you need to make agility functional -- but that's something I'm adding with the coming update!

Hey everyone, time for some real talk:

Apologies for the lack of content lately. I initially wasn't going to say anything about this, but because it's been going on much longer than anticipated, I think it's necessary. I can't go too in depth, but I'm basically undergoing medical treatment for long-term fatigue and other problems, and because of this, I've literally been asleep whenever I've not been at work for the past few weeks. The good news is: it's safe, and likely to be life changing based on the ridiculous impact it's having on me! The bad news is: it's been three weeks of constant sleep with more to come, so I've been struggling a bit just getting by, let alone producing content outside of work. But, I'm doing fine, apart from my inner workaholic dying a tragic death :/

Things look promising -- I've been dealing with sleep issues over the past year, and it's been insane how much they initially improved, along with other problems I wasn't even aware of (mental fatigue being by far the greatest.) It also conveniently explains many of the illnesses I had while growing up, including constant strep throat, sinus infections, and even gallstones which required surgery. But alas, despite how great I initially felt... I am constantly asleep for the time being.

Anyhow, the only time frame I can give for the next thing I put out is "no more than 7 weeks from now", sadly, but I'll keep you updated as best I can. It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride, so I can't really predict when I'll be back in working order. But, on whatever day I happen to feel a bit better, I plan on pushing out some more guitar-ing, since I can do that while feeling crappy. Then as soon as I'm much better, Hack/Mine streams will resume! The only other timeframe related thing I can give is that crunching will resume at work around December or January, so expect a lull around then.

TL;DR: Frizzil is making crazy excuses for not getting stuff done! Er, uh...

TL;DR: Frizzil is entering his final form! Or, um...

TL;DR: Frizzil is dealing with medical stuff, but he'll probably feel amazing once it's done. Hopefully!

Thanks for being patient! Remember the pragmatic and recurring them of Hack/Mine... "sooooon."

For anyone who was interested, I just posted a comprehensive list of donators on the OP. Total donations since the mod released are just under $700, so thank you to everyone who has donated! Even if it's only a little, I've always felt a level of commitment due to them, and I would hate to disappoint anyone who's chipped a few dollars my way. Finally, I'm no longer a college student and am currently in a position of financial stability, so I updated the text to reflect that.

To reiterate on other stats (this seems like a good spot), the mod had over 5.3 million downloads last I checked, at least 3.4 of which are exclusive. Additionally, just summing some popular videos, the combined YouTube view count is over 12 million! Woot! And finally, my G+ account has over 28 million views... wtf Google. (I have absolutely no idea what that's about.) Regardless, my ability to comprehend numbers tapers off right after 9000, so uh, thank you to everyone who has ever donated or played the mod!

Yes, being alive is always good! Well, in most countries.

Uhhhhhhhhh mayyyybe? I would have to think about it. 1.7 may be good enough for going open source, at which point folks can help out with 1.8 if they're so inclined.

Yo dawgs! I finally have had some spare time, so I posted another update of Nebulous Rax on the OP. Also, Hack/Mine update stream tonight at 8:00 PM PST! Be there or be square.

UPDATE: Stream finished last night at 11. I made a lot more progress than I thought I would! The packets introduced with HSM are now incorporated, and I'm fixing to move on to modifications I had made to existing packets. I might do another stream tonight, so stay tuned!

Frizzil, I hope you are doing well man. I know you're pretty busy with life/school/work etc, and I wish you the best in all of it! I just have on minor question; When your new update is released, are you going to put like a "thank you" or a "shoutout" to all those who have donated to you? Just curious; Keep on keepin' on! Good luck with your update and Godspeed!

I can totally do that, it's definitely not a huge list, I just have to skim through PayPal and add them somewhere. Hmm... would it be tasteless to also include how much was donated? Or should I just throw up a list?

Ah, I see your problem -- you're using Java 8! If you can run the game with Java 7 or 6, you'll get around the issue. (If you're using the Technic Launcher, run the launcher itself with Java 7 or earlier.) The details on doing that are slightly complicated if you're not familiar with the command line, so let me know if you need help or can't Google it. Otherwise, once the update is out, Java 8 will be supported, so hang tight!

I've got a question for you! I've followed this mod since its inception and I've had a blast playing it. Kudos to your hard work! Here's the question:

When you decide to open-source this, will you please drop the code somewhere like github? I'm sure there are a few of us out here that would love to fork the project and contribute as soon as the code is released, and I believe that using github or sourceforge or whatever (really any version controlled source code repository works...) would be a huge help.

    Thanks, that means a lot!

The plan was initially to stick it on GitHub, specifically. However, there appear to be legalities involved with just throwing Minecraft source out on the interwebz, so we'll need to either create or find a "diff" manager for the project, so precisely the changes for Hack/Mine and nothing else are uploaded to the repository. If git plays nice with this, then we can stick with GitHub -- if not, we'll have to get creative. The former option still looks good, so no need for concern yet.

Hey everyone, here's a quick update:

I've been working on Nebulous Rax as usual, and am experimenting with shadows and a marching cubes algorithm for rendering (basically smoothish, but otherwise stylized voxels). I also invested a good amount of time in my OpenGL framework and a clean GUI system, so can't wait to show it off. I want to do a video update soon, just want things to be more presentable.

Expect a Hack/Mine stream soon, most likely at some point this week.

Finally, sorry for being absent-ish -- we're entering crunch season again at SOE, so I'll have to try extra hard to avoid being an eerie spectre or ghost on the interwebz in the meantime.

And congrats on your role as an Everquest next developer!

I have no idea when it'll be done, hopefully within a month or two. I need to get back into the swing of livestreaming, it just eats up all of my free time (which I don't have to begin with). And thank you!

So i read your going to be a dev of everquest next. Very impressive.... I Plan on buying that game when im bored some day( Minecraft seems to make being bored really impossible) The voxel based adventure thing seems neat, and the whole "changed the way the game loads so it depends not on chunks and on your computers memory not cpu" thing sounds really intresting, becuase my computer has 8 gigs of ram, but basically no horsepower. LOL anyways, what I reallllly came here for, Is the original reason I ever used mods, pretty much ever in minecraft (back in 1.8.1 when i played mc for the first time and wanted to play your modpack, and modloader was a thing riesume? was that mod developers name right?, manually installing your mod back then was intresting for sure XD I somehow finnally got it right, the third time..... SOOO hows the mod now? LIKE your plans, becuase you say your updating it too 1.7, I was wondering, are you going to implement any new features? or just leave it as it was left off, becuase even tho barly anyone still plays it, I think with some revamping, it could have a second wind, i still play it for a few days every couple of months myself, its addicting.... And on lan servers, me and my best bro play it whenever we have time to hang out, and cant get timesplitters future perfect (for the ps2, AND IT WAS AND STILL IS AMAZING) becuase often we dont feel like pulling out the old ps2, Anyhow, if you even bothered to read this gibbirish...

Main pionts of this long rant :
    1. congratz on being a dev of a new Huge (and definatly growing) online game.
    2. What will become of hack/mine? will there be updates?
    3. I LOVE you. wellllll your work anyway.
4BONUS QUESTION! IM 19, with an attetion span of oh look your profile picture is a squirrel.... is there anywhere on the www that i can learn to code? I want to know java, maby javascript, maby html (i think i might already know a tad, unsure if its java script ,html or just forum code tho)maby lua (idk if thats how its spelled, its how its pronounced tho) basically I want to learn java, & maby a few other languages, but If i tried to read a textbook about it, i would Probably make it 3 pages in...

How's the mod now? It's awesome! Awesomer than ever! Horrible crash bugs have been mitigated, mostly :) Bug reports of other crashes thus far have been lacking, otherwise I'd fix them pretty easily, haha.

Point 1: Thanks! Smart risk-taking and hard work definitely pay off.

    Point 2: Read the thread!

    Point 3: Oh you!

Point 4: If you want to learn Java (a great language for learning AND actual use), the official Java docs appear to have a great intro to the language: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/index.html It's relatively dry reading, but once you're done with that, I actually wrote an introduction to Java, from other languages, that might improve your understanding: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/391608-modding-guide-programmers-in-depth-modding-guide-62011/

    Hope that answers your questions!

    Quote from Zilophos

    Ah, ok.

Also, will you possibly be adding a better way to save your location in Hack/Mine? I often find myself having to rely back and fourth on beds and the entrance warp blocks. It starts to become a problem the minute I leave the original spawn point. Beds and the warp blocks are pretty much a one-time-use item when it comes to saving one's position. In order to move your spawn safely, you have to leave behind trails of beds. If you don't and try to bring your beds with you, the next time you die, you'd get sent back to the level one area. Plus, trying to find sheep, or get to the red wool in towers, can sometimes be a real hassle.

    - Love those streams by the way.

However, I've used warp blocks in the past to make a warp hub. Basically, I'd go around collecting warp blocks that sent me to different levels of areas. I'd put them at my spawn point once I've gotten one, so the next time I die, I can just warp back to my last major area. The only issue is that it starts to get really annoying having to always have to collect them. If I died before I could get one in that area, I'd have to go all the way back and try again. This is the problem when using them to save your position. Its also kind of hard to keep track of which warp goes where.

So I was thinking you could add some sort of "altar." Something you could find in every other region that could be used to warp to. Like, once you found one, you could warp to it from a different one, and vice versa. This way you could have a bed to spawn you at your home (that is full of adventuring supplies!), and be able to use these "altars" to go back to your last area whenever you please.

...or you could always make one of those sethome commands. :iapprove:

Yeah, beds are currently a necessity in the mod. I suppose an alter system of sorts wouldn't be too hard with Spellscript -- I would need to add a decent state recording mechanism, not sure how hard it'd be. Alternatively, I could just slap it in Java.

Er, how are you able to grab the warp blocks? Are you going into Creative mode? I don't think they should be obtainable (but if they are, that's actually a pretty cool mechanic.)
