On the ocean issue, we are not exactly talking pre b1.8 ponds here. Playing on large biomes, I have an underwater base. I have explored part of the surrounding ocean, and it is some 3000 blocks north to south, and I have yet to see continent in east and west directions, where I also have explored some 3000 blocks. I would still prefer continents surrounded by oceans, but I find the new terrain, including the oceans, vastly superior to both pre b1.8 and b1.8-1.6 terrain.
And my daughters absolutely adore flower forests.

The wife plays on an i5-4670 with 8 GB ram an no appreciable problems. Our server is an i3-3 something with 4 ram and mechanical HD, and while it get the occasional "can't keep up" it happens rarely.
While there might not be a lot of new items, the entire block system has been rewritten, and I would expect it to be slower than beforehand. The basic engine is much more powerful than it used to be. Things like stopping light bleed and partial solidity came at a performance hit, redstone pistons came at a performance hit, monster pathing came at a performance hit, and now waterlogged blocks come at a performance hit.

If it had stopped updating around 4 years ago (redstone update), I don't think I would have really noticed it.

Personally, I think the game have moved only little since the redstone update, four and a half years ago. However, the new water physics and changing of data structure seems on par with these changes, and I look very much forward to the snapshots getting somewhere near stability so I can see the changes; I must admit that I do not spare time for doing anything but my survival world these days.

You don't quit a game. But eventually you find that you have not played in months, and when you boot up you look a bit around and then leave the game again.

If it is a public server, it is a bad idea. You don't have any mods, including the basic multiplayer administration tools. If it is just you and family or close friends, I upgraded my family server this afternoon with no ill effects.

The first few days on a brand new world, the beauty of the land along with the scramble for getting a shelter, the wonder of exploring.

On my family server, we have two villages and our main base connected by railroad. We could use horses, but rails are just easier. Further, it gives occasion for building railway stations, tunnels and various kind of bridges, so I'd say railroad definitely see good use here.

The first many times I dug a block of dirt. I thought you needed dirt to harvest trees.
