ActuallyS8N is correct. Curse of Vanishing on an item will cause the item to vanish from the world when the player/mob dies.

Not to beat a dead horse, but here is an image that compares 1-bit, 2-bit, 4-bit, and 8-bit. Think of how much memory you can store.

According to the wiki, it seems like what you're suggesting already exists. They've implemented it this way, as it's likely doing it the way you suggest was too much.

Valid point. Except the Copper Bulb only has 5 levels: 0, 4, 8, 12, and 15. This feature would be more useful if the user can set the light level with the red-stone input signal. The player should be able to control the light level rather than the oxidization process. Or make another bulb, like the "Gold Bulb" that doesn't oxidize and redstone signal strength sets the light levels.

The light levels for the Copper Bulb are 4, 8, 12, and 15. Since redstone signal strengths are 0-15, it would be nice to have precision setting for light levels of the Copper Bulb, or the hypothetical "Gold Bulb" or some other redstone activated light block.

It would be cool if the copper bulb could have light levels set 0 - 15 based on the input signal strength. It would increase the light levels to hexidecimal (0 -15). You could store data and make the copper-bulb brighter or dimmer for monochrome screens or storing memory in a computer. Right now we already have the Redstone Lamp that is already binary (0-1).

Here is an example of the difference of light-levels (pixel-depth in graphics) you can have for a monochrome screen:

I am actually surprised that Mojang didn't think of this already. Maybe it could be an uncommon occurrence in a mountain biome that a volcano will generate.

posted a message on Add a Gold Bulb in Addition to the Copper Bulb

I like the Copper Bulb. How about a Gold Bulb too? The difference is that the brightness level can be set by the input redstone signal strength. For example the Gold Bulb would act the same as the Copper Bulb except if you set it with a signal strength of 4 it would output a light level of 4. This might make it easier to make a wider dynamic range screens: Wider range of brightness for monochrome displays.
