Fnordian's point is that for him it's more about 'morality' I think. Which is a largely abstract term, but is valid for a lot of people.

This discussion is meant to be focused around legality though, not morality two different things. Legally, this is illegal. Morally, it can be considered wrong or right. But we are focusing on the legal realm. Yes it's unlikely that mojang will prosecute the developers of nodus, but no it doesn't make the development of nodus legal.

    Thank you Eryan,
and while the morality of copyright law may be in debate, the law is.. until it is changed.. the law and must be followed. What disturbs me most though is when I see lawbreaking 'justified' by the "they'll never catch me" argument.. not only is that incredibly untrue it's self destructive and anti-social. In my work (which I'd rather not go into) I see this attitude and it saddens me because very often, the young person who just said it to me.. I know is just a walking corpse.. waiting to be dropped when that attitude is presented to the wrong person.

Okay, what else could possibly happen? The internet police give you a virtual smack on the face for cheating?

you miss the point entirely, I truly hope you get out of this "If I can get away with it its ok" mentality.. for your own sake and life. I mean that.. That is a road you really do not want to go down, it ends in blood and tears.

Illegal in a grey area. It's like downloading a free Nintendo ROM off the internet. Legal? No, but people won't kick down your door for it.

someone just post a TROLOLOLO video link or something, I cannot honestly believe that there are so many people who think it's just about if you get caught or not...

    Ok, fine. You win.

Now the question is 'what are we to do with all these cold-hearted criminals?'. Afterall, they did rename a couple java archive files.

see, this is where your generation is going to have some trouble... Law isn't a game, you don't win or loose. Pressing charges is up to Mojang, and they may never do it... So I guess the question is onto you... do you really have so little respect for the rules of society, the same rules that keep you alive when you've run your smart little mouth to someone who could snap you like a twig... that you are willing to continue breaking those rules?

If so start sleeping in your closet... that'll be about the size of your permanent residence in the future.

    ...and is mojang policy law?

Mojangs policy is BASED on the actual wording of copyright law, it is a simplification but it is accurate and actually gives the end user more freedom already than they would normally have.

No. Way. My mind is blown.

Anyway, you've pretty much dodged the fact that you still need a premium account to use nodus. Why is that, fnord?

because it's immaterial to the violation of law... if I may cite Mojangs own policy on this..

If you've bought the game, you may play around with it and modify it. We'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changed versions of our software. Basically, mods (or plugins, or tools) are cool (you can distribute those), hacked versions of the Minecraft client or server are not (you can't distribute those).

the violation is in the sharing and downloading of those "hacked" clients... and that's exactly what nodus.jar is.

    Laws can be repealed.

Yes laws can be repealed, but until they are, they are still the law. Ask a police officer about that.

    <Snipped to second important part>
Alcoholic beverages were illegal in America in the 1920's. Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it's illegal for a good reason, and in this case nodus isn't even breaking any law, therefore making your argument invalid.

Nodus violates copyright law, as to the "fairness" of that law as it currently exists you may have some moral ground.. however it does not change the fact that until the law is changed you are committing a crime.

When downloading nodus, you download a file called 'nodus.jar', which you replace your minecraft.jar with.

This, do you see what you yourself said here.. "you replace your minecraft.jar with", that makes it a fully modded fully executable .jar, which makes it Criminal (there, now no more dancing around words, I said it.. Criminal)

actually the whole "does it really harm X" argument is moot it's an, illegal copy of someones (mojangs) work.. why is this even debated. it's Illegal. Just like boxing grannies ears randomly is illegal.

Disagree with copyright laws as they exist, fine contact your legislator... but don't break the law.. sheesh

Very true guys. I'm just hoping for a way to make the small servers have a chance. There are so many servers who don't have a chance, and I feel they have such potential.

Actually when you run FTB for the first time, it downloads a copy of minecraft.jar. It does, however, require you to have a premium account. Same with Nodus. They're both legal.

does Nodus get the .jar from mojang unmodified, or modded from some other source?
