    Quote from mrbaggins

Halo totally is an RPG. However it's also an FPS.

If there's a story and playing through the story as a character is the main component of gameplay, then yes, it's an RPG. CoD is NOT, as the majority of gameplay in that game is NOT the development of a single or party of characters, and is instead pick guns, shoot people.

That definition is worthless, because it doesn't gel with what people classically think of as RPGs. People don't think of Halo as an RPG, they think of it as a shooter... and classic RPGs like dungeon crawlers and rogue-likes are left out. Just about every game nowadays has a heavy emphasis on story. So what meaning does it have to say that all games are RPGs? It makes your definition useless.

Wikipedia's definition of RPGs is also useless, and it should be ignored.

When defining a game genre, you define it based on it's mechanics. RPGs are stat driven games. This goes back to pen and paper games where the term was invented... in those games, everything is determined by stats. That was carried over by video games like Ultima, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, where your success in battle is determined by your stats and not by your skill. In terms of modern games, games like Persona, Dragon Age, these are RPGs. CoD and Halo are first person shooters. Minecraft is a construction/adventure game.

I'm starting to think the word "RPG" should be a banned in the 1.9 Update Discussion. That way people can stop spreading lies and confusing the rest of the peoplez.

Honestly, I'm starting to wish the term would be abolished from speech, period. It's a weird misleading term with no clear definition, that these days gets applied to every single game.

posted a message on Are we really trying to make enchantments easy?
This thread asks the wrong question. I don't think anyone wants enchantments to be easy.... we want them to be FUN. Right now enchantments are not fun to obtain. That's bad for the game, so the system needs to be changed, no way around it.

Even if grinders were made useless, they will just be altered slightly to funnel monsters so that people can use them to kill monsters by hand, that way they'll get the items and experience. So in essence, they won't really be useless, their utility will just be changed. In fact, even if this change wasn't made and you could still collect items from grinders, I have a feeling many people will be doing this anyway because people need experience much more than any of the monster items now. You only need so many bones.

Perhaps it's better to change it... I'm all for the idea of allowing people to be clever, but I also like the idea of forcing people to get their hands dirty.

posted a message on New Sea-creatures found
It never used to be a problem before, but now that animals are persistent it's become very annoying. Animals seem to flock towards water, leaving the land barren and the sea saturated with animals. It makes hunting after them and killing them very annoying.

I really think this needs some kind of fix... either animals should drown after being in water a certain amount of time, or they should be coded to avoid water and always head towards land.
