    New Mob Idea: Mole

Environment: Terrestrial, Normal to Dry environments, Dirt.
AI: Non-Hostile, burrows in dirt and is attracted to vegetables flowers. Could spawn in any grass covered block and slowly eats crops.
Drop: Mole Hair, can be used in potion brewing to amplify already existing improvement to mining.

I imagine this guy being a non-hostile pest. I don't think that it should actually destroy dirt blocks as it "digs" around, but it could kill the grass on top of the path it follows so it leaves a conspicuous trail. I then makes a b-line for your garden and gobbles you azaleas! You gotta dig it's trail up to find the bugger, maybe a random chance of picking the right part of the trail, and then... whack a mole!

Let me know what you think.

I already have an idea for a variant. Working on the skin now.

    Variant: MagMole

Environment: Deep earth, in the magma layer.
AI: Non-Hostile, spawns in lava pools and can be attracted to the player if digging nearby. Slowly destroys rock blocks as it moves, pulling lava along with it.
Drop: Magmole claw, adds improved mining to a potion as well as amplifies fire resistance.

I imagine this sucker being a bit more of a dangerous pest. It won't actually attack you, but the tink tink sounds of you mining attract it, perhaps it sounds like the mating signal of it's species, which might bring an unexpected lava flow into your area. Mighty dangerous indeed!

What program did you use to make the models? it looks super great!

I used 3D Studio Max 2010. I'm a self taught 3d designer and an aspiring video game maker. Glad you like it!

This is a great idea, but the thing is octopi don't have ink. That's squids you're thinking of. It's probably excusable, though, since this guy look so suited to MC, and the ink thing seems like a nice ability for a non-hostile mod, though maybe it'll have some special drops to make attacking them useful?

Actually, most varieties of octopods have ink sacs. The invisible octopus is one of them. Check out the youtube video I posted in the main post. It shows the octopus dash off after being discovered, clearly leaving behind a cloud of ink. They're pretty versatile. Yeah I like the ink as a non-hostile ability too. I also think dropping ink when killed (or milked) could be a good drop if something like paint or dye ever comes into play (which it totally should).

Thanks for the comments guys! Keep them up, they are the source of my power! Mwahahahahaha...cough erm hehe... heh. Hrm.

I just had a thought; it should have more of a derp face like the rest of the passive animals :Pig:

No way! Octopi are pretty clever little suckers (get it?). Plus they have crazy eyes.

Yeah, I sincerely doubt I would ever loose any sleep over the way it is now. But if we're discussing the nature of the mineral, then I feel it appropriate to bring up my points. Honestly, Minecraft is probably the best game ever made and I don't think it needs more realism to be better, but I don't think it would hurt.

Hahaha! Milking octopods for ink would be amazing. We could spare the cute little guys and still get our ink. It would be really cool to make an aquarium and get some octopods in there for frequent milking. Ink farm.

@Megadog: Do you mean you want to see the actual texture? If so, enjoy!

I'm a fan of gravel, actually. It's a great way to make quick steps down to a deep cave you find while mining. Just stick a block to a nearby wall over and over until the falling gravel creates a safe platform to move down to the ground with. Then just scoops them rocks on up with yer handy shovel, and off ya go. Cheap and plentiful, good stuff in my book!

    Also: Concrete would be cool!

    New Mob Idea: Octopus

    Environment: Aquatic
AI: Non-Hostile, attempts to flee when attacked and squirts cloud of ink that cannot be seen through (perhaps a four block area around the octopus)
Drop: Ink (Possibly gathered with bucket)
Misc: Rarer natural spawn. Found in isolation.

I imagine this creature being a non-hostile mob, obviously aquatic, probably rare and even rarer to find several in the same place. They could drop ink, which could be used for all kinds of things *cough*cartography*cough.*

    Plus, they're damned cute!

    Comments welcome.

    Variant: Giant Octopus

    Environment: Aquatic
AI: Hostile, Territorial. Perhaps if it gets too low on health, it will attempt to flee with a similar ink method as the normal octopus.
Drop: Ink (Possibly gathered with bucket)
Misc: Rarer natural spawn. Found in isolation.

Whipped this bad boy up with a simple geometry and texture change. Lemme know what you guys think. Hopefully it will appease those looking for a more dangerous aquatic foe.

    Variant: Invisible Octopus

    Environment: Aquatic
AI: Non-Hostile, remains hidden disguised as a block of material until attacked. Which point it flees some distance and assumes another disguise.
Drop: Omni-Ink (Possibly gathered with bucket), ink that can assume the color of any other object it is paired with (could be an extremely rare, but good way to get varying ink colors that usually require crushing up a bunch of a material)
Misc: Extremely rare. Found in isolation.

This guy can land on a block, be it sand, rock, dirt or whatever, and turn into a copy of that block with little eyes. At which point it just sits there stationary. If you inadvertently try to mine the "octo-block," the mob freaks out and rapidly turns back into it's natural form and speeds off, startling the player to hell and back.

    Marvel at my illustration!

Got inspiration for this variant from this video

I like that obsidian is in the game, but I feel the obligation to bring up some interesting aspects of the mineraloid. Interestingly, it's got a hardness of about 5.5, which is actually lower than Quartz, which is 7 (and quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the world, it generally accounts for a large portion of granite, which is a very common rock). So I feel like the difficulty of breaking that crap apart is a tad much...

I also think that it's uses are a little off. Being an impenetrable material is cool and all (and I think an important part of the game) but the material is actually quite brittle. A better use, in my opinion, would be as crafted blades. Obsidian is like flint, in that if fractured the right way, the edge can be molecule thin. This could make the material extremely useful for high quality arrowheads and high quality sword blades. I could imagine a sweet black sword that deals a lot of damage, though it should break quickly (though so should diamond swords as both materials lack significant toughness). I think a better impenetrable material would be some sort of processed metal, as making metal tends to bring out all the toughness of a mineral and gets rid of the brittle aspects.

That being said, I love that it's basically impossible to find unless you get the right water/lava combination. And I love having the black material for aesthetic purposes.

    </two cents>

It doesn't wear down and it's pretty damned useful for getting around. I'd say it's worth the diamonds.
